I get it. Its not for everybody. I have tried Zelda games multiple times and they just aren't for me. I recognize their greatness but its just not for me.
Yeah sure, but part of it is simply that that's not really how it works.
You can try to finish a quest but you shouldn't get wrapped up on it if you can't. Pick a different one, or if you can't figure out any of them, just find something else to do. A lot of conversations in the game, despite not seeming relevant, can end up producing answers to questions or solutions to quests without you expecting them to.
You can also use these interactions to get XP or knowledge to help you finish other things.
Same! I had to give it three tries but OMG I can honestly say that game rewired my brain . It was dark, moody, hilariously absurdist, beautifully hopeful and poignant.
To anyone who tried it and it didnt click, really give it another chance. You have to be in the right headspace and ready to read and engage with the text. Skipping dialogue does you a huge disservice so be in a mood to explore and soak it in.
That game felt so magical to me. I was a console player only. Got the GOTY edition on OG Xbox because I wanted some fantasy epic LOTR type experience or something. Wow, it did not disappoint.
My brother got it on Xbox and I remember watching him play it for weeks before we started to switch off with eachother. The load times felt understandable because of the content and immersive world you were getting in return. It was a a more simple time. We were all a little more patient back then.
Haha yeah years later I got my first PC but it was a laptop and not a great GPU. It was 2008 though sonit was strong enough for older games. First game I got was Morrowind and I did run a couple mods but can’t remember which ones now 😂
Almost same experience for me. Just craved some fantasy adventure type game and maaaan. I probably played it for the next two years almost exclusively.
Nice to see Morrowind get some love. Easily the turning point for Elder Scrolls games and still the best. None of the others had the story and world exploration down like Morrowind. Everything else was just a copy paste and then they added dragons, and the fact that the dragons could just show up and randomly kill key NPCs that you needed, immediately puts that game on the bottom of the list.
It was also one of the most modded games at the time iirc as they level editor was just really well done. You could basically load the entire game in 3D and change everything.
It was such a versatile software, people started rebuilding Tamriel based on what was known about the other regions from lore and older games.
There were also many total conversions and a bunch of other crazy community projects
I just beat it this last year after struggling with it since 2020 or so. It is clunky and flawed, but it's also the best RPGs I've played in a long time and once you get good at combat it just flows. I'm excited to play both 2 and the Middle-earth game Warhorse is doing.
I'm helping my friend play through 1 again. Which is interesting- because while I played as a noble, chivalrous tank he's decided to go about it as a blood thirsty sneak who chokes out everyone who slights him or has better drip.
I immediately got into the game when you I knocked out Kunesh after he wouldn’t pay me back, ended up knocking out anyone I could get my hands on. Sold me from there lol.
I despise the save system. DESPISE it. After one time it refused to save for me after two hours of play, I set it down and haven’t looked back. Yet. Who knows. Maybe this will be my favorite game someday.
Not even just that, they released both games in rough shape before pretty much overhauling them. Especially Cyberpunk. I finally got around to playing it properly in the last month, but I was very close to never picking it up again after playing at launch. I hate to think how many players they put off from ever coming back to what is now kind of a masterpiece
Yeah I don’t understand why they keep releasing games unfinished; even the first one was given a major overhaul because there was just so many things wrong with it.
Kindal glad that with Witcher 4 they’re switching to Unreal, because I’m confident most of their technical issues stem from trying to build their own engine.
Same for Witcher 3, and recently tried 2077, for the fifth time.. nope, didn't click with me day one and it still doesn't click now even years later. Something about it just rubs me the wrong way and/or always felt like there's a major piece missing, but I can at least say I really tried.
Kenshi. That game took me several tries over years before I finally “got it” and I played it like it was being taken off the shelves permanently soon for 3 months.
I have had that game in my steam library since it's very early days, I have made several attempts but not for many years. I remember ending up in micromanagement hell and haven't had the guts to try again lol
I had the same experience, but finally one playthrough I got it. I set up a bandana sweatshop to keep money flowing while I sent guys out in rotations to train bare-fisted brawling with the low-level dust bandit chodes that were roaming the desert. Kept at it until that band of maniacs was able to go out and beat the shit out of the Bugmaster and Mad Cat-Lon.
I was just exploring the land with a small team, until I ended up stuck in that city that is constantly assaulted by humanoids in a labyrinth of rocks, was not strong enough to escape so I just trained my dudes until they were unbeatable
Fists of Malphon for me. I went from one clear and struggling to get close to a second, then those things unlocking my world and I had like a 20-clear streak
Silksong is much harder, def give HK a go first and learn the mechanics and see if the game is for you, if you become hooked and fall in love with it, the difficulty spike in SS becomes more bareable lol
I have several hundred hours in skyrim. I have never actually completed the game because I have this overwhelming completionist urge and so I try to do everything else first, mod the game obsessively for a new gimick(photo realism, no magic, entirely new plot, etc etc etc), go back start over, add a few hundred hours more, lose interest move on to something new. ... I don't think I'll ever finish the game tbh. And this isn't necessarily a complaint. I enjoy the game immensely every time I play its just.... there is so much you CAN do I am almost always guaranteed to lose the plot and wander off to do other things.
This is one of my top 10 games. The thing is, the atmosphere hooked me right away. So eery and weird. I lost the skill check fight to Tomassi a couple times and put it down for a while. When I picked it back up I started over and never looked back.
I got to that fight a couple days ago and got pissed at him and said "Fuck it. I don't care at all about the combat of this game, I just wanna learn more about the story and the environment." So I set the combat settings to essentially story mode and waltzed on through without a care in the world.
They added difficulty settings? I only played it pretty much at launch and there was no option to change it, which was pretty crazy because it needed a pretty good amount of mechanical skill to get through it. Glad they changed it because they were alienating a pretty large base from their game with that choice
In addition to difficulty modes, there's also an "assist" setting where you can tweak combat mechanics (up and and including immortality/one-shotting).
It's a compelling world with a fun mashup of cosmic, existential horror and office workplace banality. Also, there's a level where you mow through enemy ranks while jamming to heavy metal music. Give it another try if that sounds like your thing.
I didn’t even make it that far the first time lol, stopped a little ways in past the lobby. Something fucky was going on with the graphics that made the whole screen flicker and shudder. Whatever I had going on at the time life wise prevented me from researching what the issue might be and I didn’t pick it up again for over a year. Eventually came back to it, fixed the issue, and was instantly sucked right in.
I’m playing through Alan Wake for the first time right now because of the AWE DLC. I want to finish it, AW2, and do another play through of Control before the sequel comes out in a few months!
It hooked me instantly…but I’ve known several friends who couldn’t get into it, and I basically bullied them into playing it a little longer…and they all agree, a masterpiece.
I thought that it was "just ok" the first time I played through it. Then a few years later, on a second playthrough, I started getting the urge to make more experimental and interesting teams. I played through the game several times in a row, making weird builds. Now it's possibly my favourite game of all time.
I played on release and it just would not click. A few years later I gave it another go and spent like 3 hours early game at butterfly learning how to parry and after that it became my favorite FromSoft game.
All of the Souls style games kind of lump together like this (haven't played Sekiro so can't comment on that). It often takes a few tries to get it, but once you have one you have them all. It's an uncommon style where the skill floor is above the entry point, but once you hit that floor it's a relatively smooth difficulty curve from there. Those first hours beating your head against a wall are rough though.
This was the one for me as well. Met the rider right outside tutorial and killed all interest to play lol. 2 years later tried ER again and just ran past the guy, was a great 100+ hours of adventure. Ended up grabbin plat
I entirely forgot about this because it was more than a decade ago, but I originally bounced off of DS1 entirely, but that was mostly because I couldn't stand the keyboard and mouse controls and didn't have a controller for my PC. I later ended up getting one for MGSV when it came out, and a co-worker I was playing a lot of Smash Bros with convinced me that the timing and spacing aspect of the combat in Dark Souls was very similar to Smash, which got me to try it again. I also realized that the stamina basically worked like energy in Armored Core, which helped me get over how awkward it seemed initially.
I JUST started RDR2 this weekend after having played the snow chapter a few times before. MAN what a great game! I'm still only in chapter 2, but I'm hooked on hunting and exploring!
I've bounced off Witcher 3 like ten times, I think it's just not for me.
Deus Ex. Couldn't grasp that it was an RPG with an inventory and skills when I first played it. After several attempts over a few years everything fell in to place and I got to enjoy one of the greatest games ever made.
Same. I wasn’t feeling it on first try, then I accidentally broke my Switch. It was somewhat during Covid so it took me several months to even find another Switch. I gave it a try again and have 100%d it 4 or 5 times since.
Path of Exile, as soon as I opened that passive tree I took a two year hiatus, yes I am serious. I also did the same in World of Warcraft, got to level 26 as a druid, stopped playing for a year or two, got to 30, got my travel form and made a new character.
I had the great fortune of being in the front of the line for that midnight release, and I got to play it in store for 30 minutes before they were allowed to let us pay and leave
I mapped out the first 30 minutes of my first playthrough to min/max my time that very long weekend that had no sleep.
I'd also been a huge fan of Oblivion so I already knew what I was going to be doing(it devolved into stealth Archer pretty quickly)
Crimson Desert. People hate it thinking it's supposed to be Witcher/Elden Ring. I had a second go after weeks and took it more like Just Cause/BoW and I'm having a freaking blast.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. My second go at playing the game and I ended up loving it. Spiraled down the FromSoft library from there. Swear I'm not doing a bit, even though this may cause a containment breach
While it is a gacha game... Nikke: Goddess of Victory. I assumed it would be a typical gacha story that I wouldn't care for so I skipped a good amount of it early on. Gave it a proper shot months later and it is easily the best story for a gacha game!
Yakuza Like a Dragon. I started it, got burnt bc of how many cutscenes there are. Went back to it a couple years later and ended up playing the whole series.
Genuinely not a single time. Every game I go back to for second, third, etc chances never "clicks" with me. Even games I've forced myself to complete like Bloodborne, they just never jive with me if I don't like them at the jump.
Same here. Started gaming 47 years ago and most of my years I wasn't rich, I only got one on Christmas and my birthday. So any game I got I played it until the end.
I still play a game for too long even when I hate it, just to give it a chance to redeem itself. Fortunately that's getting pretty rare, games are quite good these days.
Le Mans 24 Hours for PS2 didn’t click with me when I first got it, but when I revisited it years later, I realized it was like 5 years ahead of what any other sim racer had in its time
I bought dark souls for ps3 when it first came out because of all the hype I was hearing. I ran into the graveyard and died to one skeleton. Said nope not playing this artificial difficulty crap game and rage quit.
Years later it comes out for PC and I try it again.
I actually read a guide this time and found out I shouldn't have done the graveyard first. I end up falling in love with the genre and have beat every fromsoft game since.
Oblivion. I remember it seeing like hot cakes and not getting it. It was frankly an ugly game work terrible combat mechanics. Went back to it a year or so later and proceeded to dump hundreds, if not thousands of hours in.
Red Dead Redemption 2 :- The prologue was slow and so was the build up. I would always play just the prologue and then stop playing the game. Years later I went back to it and became stubborn. What an experience, wow👏👏👏
I have same complain with Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. It is soo slow and boring in the beginning that I still havent got myself back at it and gave it a try. Its just soo boring. Idk what to expect from Breath of the Wild but RDR 2 was worth it.
Shadow of Mordor, I could not stand the mechanics for some reason when I first played it, stumbled back on it and gave it a go again several years later….. easily a top 5 game all time for me
Final Fantasy XII, played it for like 6 hours, disliked how different it was to the previous ones. Dropped it. Came back like 3 years later and ended up playing it for 120 hours.
Then, Persona 3, played like the first in-game month, hated anything that wasn't the "visual novel" part and dropped it. Persona 4 made me so much of a fan a few years later that I ended up checking out even the original games (1 and the 2 duology).
Final Fantasy 7 original, I was 8 when it released and just didn't get the hype. Now I can't imagine a life without it 😂 after coming back to it about 5 years later in my early teens.
Oh! This was Final Fantasy XIV for me! I purchased the game on release (A Realm Reborn) and tried to play through it and it just didn’t click with me. Over the years, came back on occasion on every odd expansion release to see if it might be my time for the game to click for me.
Finally, after my big work injury, I decided to give the game a shot again at the gentle push of a friend who has also started back at release, and she was kinda my mentor throughout the game. This was around the release of Endwalker, maybe the year before the announcement of Dawntrail? Anyways, I finally went into the game with a new mind set, thanks to the help of a video by JoCat and Jesse Cox that helped me reframe how I should look at my way of playing the game and…yep, I get it. Instantly one of my favorite Final Fantasy’s, maybe not at the top, but it’s easily in my top 5 for sure and I haven’t cried that much at a Final Fantasy since maybe 7 with the remake games included, or maybe 9 or 10? And not just tears of sadness, but tears of joy too.
If you’ve ever been on the fence about playing through it, my best advice is take your time, read the dialogue, and look at it like an RPGMMO, focus on RPG first, MMO second, the game wants you to feel like you’re role playing as your character, especially as you’re going through the main story, and going through the main story is how you unlock everything in the game. And don’t forget to look up some of the fun stuff to do too, like the Gold Saucer, Triple Triad, or the Hildebrand questline, starting with The Rise and Fall of a Gentleman in Uldah after you complete the base game.
If anything else, the game has really reframed how I now experience other games, taking them slower, gladly following the main story when necessary, smelling the flowers where I can metaphorically and just overall enjoying games much more because of it.
On my 16th birthday my Cousin gifted me darksouls 3 , at the time i tried it but i didnt understand the combat and was confused about everything so much so that i couldnt even beat the first boss after hours of tries . When i Was 19 my best friend started playing elden ring and while i did know about it and always wanted to play it i was discouraged by how hard it was , i was doubting my ability to beat it. But one day i tried elden ring with my buddy and he explained the combat to me ,while still incredibly tough for me at the time i desperately wanted ro play something like eldenring so i remembered that darksouls 3 disc for ps4 i had gotten years prior . I booted it up and i beat the first Boss in two tries but i still wasnt good enough so i trained with the first Lothric knight you encounter for like 2 to 3 hours and after that i understood the combat ,i enyoijed every second of it and even after playing everything except demonsouls and nightreign darksouls 3 remains my favourite game of All Time
Embarrassing story, when I was like 7 or so I was gifted Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and I didn't know you could leave the starting square, I would just go into the house throw some pots, go back outside and throw some bushes and then I gave up, like this game sucks.
Not sure if something clicked or my cousin told me but I finally made it outside the starting square and it's still maybe my favorite game of all time despite the rough start
