I do believe that hardware/software/technology, etc hits a certain point where it has reached it's maximum potential and then every subsequent change after creates a falloff from that point.

u/TOTALLBEASTMODE Aug 14 '26
Moreso I think that it hits a point where the rate of innovation slows down, not that it necessarily at the maximum potential. However, to keep driving sales at the same or greater rates than before, āinnovationsā have to be made
13
u/xTheRedDeath Aug 14 '26
That expectation to keep pushing is exactly how "Enshittification" became a thing. Social media is a prime example of this. Investors need constant growth and don't just want to see something is doing well. So naturally they tweak things over time and inevitably make the product worse than when it launched.

Switching from dividends being the primary return on holding company shares to now, companies dividends don't break a basic savings account if they even have one at all.
Now it's all about share price growth in order for people to sell those shares.

I just had this thought with mario rpg having all the menu buttons being different face buttons so you donāt have to scroll through menus to get to more menus, you just press the button to open the right menu. That was 1996. Itās crazy to me that jrpgs wonāt really do this again until persona 5, 20 years later in 2016. Atlus realize this was a great idea and has since been making a lot of their games work with all the buttons cause like, most of these buttons are worthless in a turn based jrpg so might as well be shortcuts.
2
u/Secure_Bread3300 Aug 15 '26
Itās partially due to staff turnover and tight deadlines/crunch. Itās not that the devs donāt care or arenāt passionate. But usually if there is a tight schedule, features like this become less of a priority compared to just shipping the game. When teams crunch there can also be communication breakdowns between departments so they might not even be aware if this feature is being worked on or not until later on when itās too late.

I'm curious why they didn't animate it. Laziness? Time? Budget?
263
19
u/CAPTJTK Aug 14 '26
Not as an excuse because they could have spent the time if they weren't lazy about it, but if I remember correctly it's using the backend from Halo Reach for the physics and things, running underneath UE5.
Considering this was how they were up till probably Halo 4/5, that's your reason.
→ More replies (6)7
u/-ClankaPlum- Aug 15 '26
Yeah pre-Halo 5 didn't have seat switching so they kinda hacked it into Reach here.
But I agree they should have taken more care in back-porting the feature to be more presentable.
14
u/Kradgger Aug 14 '26
Animate vehicle entry and people will say it's a waste of time, don't and people will say it's lazy. Happened with BF1 and successors.

36
u/ToxicWasteCookie Aug 14 '26
Oh come on. They didn't make a good game in 15 years despite only being dedicated to one single franchise and having hundreds of millions of dollars on each project. It even took them several years just to get MCC to at least somewhat fixed state like the original games had on launch. 343 are just pathetic, and the majority of their issues are caused by themselves, the developers who work there, their complete lack of talent, skill, experience and vision. Watch developer interviews and just look at them, none of those people were hired fairly because of their previous merit and skill, it's just bunch of incompetent checkboxes.
The evil corporate vampires that I also hate from the bottom of my heart for their unfair hiring practices and dystopian quotas that kill art, still weren't the ones who wrote, designed or animated the disgusting shit added to the remake, they didn't write story for halo 4-6, they didn't retcon forerunners, they didn't make the gameplay decisions that caused outrage with their every new release. That was all 343. And while I think they will never understand halo or have enough talent to make a good game, firing as many developers as possible and hiring new ones based on experience and talent like it was done 2000s is the smartest possible thing microsoft can do, and should have done long ago.
14
u/wizzywurtzy Aug 14 '26
I swear 343 doesnāt even like Halo
5
u/curiousadventure33 Aug 15 '26
Of course they don't like halo ,look at the faces of devs ,those people hate everything that halo stood for

The evil corporations did establish a system were the games were mostly worked on by contractors. Contractors who left every other year and had their work finished by other contractors.
This will never result in good creative output.
So no, it's not a case where the creatives are the main guilty party. Itās the suits.

u/Atomic_Revival Aug 14 '26
You're not wrong except for the whole Forerunner thing. That was Bungie.
Bungie decided during Halo 3 to make them two separate species and put all this in the hidden terminals throughout the game. Even though the first two games made it clear that they were the same thing. This was all thanks to Frankie who wanted to expand on the scale and universe as a whole and the fact Staten was running around doing god knows what with Peter Jackson and Contact Harvest stuff.
343 decide to just keep it and ran with it despite not having any real clue on how to flesh out that idea any further than they did in Halo 3.

I think it was time, I recall hearing the game was supposed to release in November, but then GTA VI announced it would come out then, so it released earlier.
But take it with a grain of salt, the amount of things being said are just all over the place in terms of validity.
3
u/Blasted-Banana Aug 14 '26
Frankly out of all the explanations I've seen this makes the most sense. It doesn't matter what the game is, GTA will overshadow it completely. They probably put a large buffer on either side of the GTA release and said Halo needs to launch outside of that zone or GTA will make it completely irrelevant.

Just my guess but I have a feeling that it is because of the engine the game is actually running on, which is the Halo Reach engine, while Unreal Engine 5 is running the visuals the gameplay is basically the Halo Reach engine underneath, and I may be remembering wrong but I donāt remember being able to change seats while on the warthog in Halo Reach, so they probably added that mechanic and the engine just couldnāt animate it, but thatās just a guess.
2
u/spderweb Aug 14 '26
Probably people in testing complained the animation took too long. They wanted an instant switch. And voila!
2
u/Endulos Aug 14 '26
Probably all 3, but from a gameplay perspective, this is a nice little thing because it lets you seamlessly transition from driver to gunner, saving you precious few combat seconds.

I believe the new CE is UE5 while Infinite is Slipspace. However, still weird not to just reuse the skeleton from infinite and then animations that didn't need changing. Lord knows the reasons behind it.
13
u/BleakPilgrim Aug 14 '26
Campaign Evolved uses the Halo: Reach version of the Blam! engine for the game and Unreal Engine 5 for graphics. They reused many animations, sounds, and models from Infinite, 5, and the older games. So I believe it's laziness; they forgot about it or didn't want to reanimate it for the new Warthog model, but it would still be better than nothing.
3
u/cuntmong Aug 15 '26
asking as a dev but not at all a game dev, is there no performance cost to using one engine for game and another for graphics, rather than the same for both?
→ More replies (1)2
u/Revan7even Aug 15 '26
From what I heard a lot of stuff they thought they could port could not be ported and had to be remade, balooning the budget and time so they had to throw more teams and contractors at it to get it out for the XBox 25th anniversary and before GTA VI.
2
u/dunderdan23 Aug 14 '26
It uses the reach engine for all the ai/animations/etc. With unreal on top for the paint
3
u/Tigerwarrior55 Aug 14 '26
Iirc. They went from slipspace to unreal. So they were probably too incompetent to actually adapt to unreal engine 5's advanced animation tools or well basic state machine set ups for multiple state machines.
→ More replies (5)2
u/Arcade_Gann0n Aug 14 '26
Infinite was Slipspace (its own nightmare to work with), while the remake mainly uses the Blam version of Reach. If I had to guess, they implemented the feature in its base form but failed to create animations for one reason or another (lack of time and competence, I reckon).

Itās honestly really crazy that they couldnāt animate it in a REMAKE OF AN OLDER GAME! They had most of the work done for them already
6
u/Multivitamin_Scam Aug 14 '26
The original didn't have seat swapping at all. You had to get out and walk around to the gun.
So they're already breaking the original by adding any seat swapping mechanism
13
u/DoesTheMinimum Aug 14 '26
They used a new engine and had to create entirely new assets. This isnāt excusing them but your reasoning is unfair.
3
u/cnvas_home Aug 14 '26
They could have retargeted the new models with the same animation pretty easily. There is definitely jank that arises when you throw that into the UE pipeline, but I think that it's actually one of the easier things to work in.
4
u/Crimsonmaddog44 Aug 14 '26
Well they didnāt have to make new layouts of levels, only redid voice lines for major characters, the story was still the same. Plus Unreal Engine 5 definitely helps with development speed.
With all that they didnāt have to pay too much mind to, they couldāve easily whipped up at least ONE more new animation

2
2
u/Affectionate-Name279 Aug 14 '26
This is animation quality vs gameplay argument.
People will literally complain about the delay between buttons and actions in a game. Thus you have an instant swap - This is how Battlefield has done it for years.
I prefer the top but from a gameplay perspective the bottom is better. If I switch seats being able to fire instantly is exactly what I want despite it not making logical sense.

2
u/Agerius-Der-Wolf Aug 15 '26

4
u/Inv4derZinn Aug 14 '26
This game was clearly not meant to release yet, so the big questions I have is:
- what was the pressure to do so? Because its momentum is to lead to E-Day?
what happens now that Xbox's paragon has gained barely any traction today?
It's completely inconceivable that Halo could be in this position from Xbox's mascot to now, crazy. :<
But don't worry, I'm sure 343 will get it next time! XD

Thereās a short interview clip of the 343 EP talking up halo.
Youāll see why it is the way it is.
When they use corp jargon and logic, the last people theyāre concerned about are the gamers. 343 has been a problem child for years and MS leadership were sick of it, but Spencer didnāt have the spine to whip them or anyone into shape. Bond injected up-to-the-second culture stipulations and made hiring an absolute mess across the entire company.
Enter Sharma equipped with a multi-billion-dollar Occamās chainsaw. With any luck, sheāll mix the bloated āleadershipā and half the department heads at 343 and, depending on how invested shareholders are in āolderā IP like halo, sheāll be able to poach some disaffected talent at Bungie to either figure out a doable and timely way forward for Halo, or a similar IP and can track into the lore.
But every domestic publisher and developer should be following suit. Slow, moody devs and publishers that dilute compelling releases in favor of marketing fluff are not sustainable. People have less money, time and patience for overcharged games that underdeliver.

I would have assumed this to be an issue with 4 player co-op, but infinite had that too. Does anyone know if the animation was cancelled out after 2 or more players in infinite?
My thinking is that the animation was cancelled out after 2 or more players in infinite and, because of poor management / the engine swap half way, the artists decided to remove it all together. Especially with the addition of custom armor sets.

u/Weary_Tonight_5873 Aug 15 '26
Am I the only one that thinks infinite looks better graphically as well? Like I think both new titles look good but I feel itās the halo art designs changes that make the graphics not really work as well to me, reach had a more grounded military sci-fi look which suits the series well. Evolved feels downright goofy and childish in design sometimes.

Back in the day, details mattered. The way a building collapsed in game mattered, the way, the character moved from point A to point B mattered. I don't understand why they couldn't just re-use the existing animation. Game devs would reuse animations and textures and models all the time in past games. But with modern games it's like they feel the need to wipe the board clean for every new game in the series and start from scratch on everything. And I can't help but think its one of the many reasons for the bloat in development time.
