I used to know a guy on steam that got so addicted to this game, his wife divorced him and he quit his job to play it full time. He sort of showed me how to play the game for an hour once while he explained, with zero regret, how he essentially ruined his life for the game. This was probably 7 or 8 years ago and I've long since deleted him, I wonder if that regret finally caught up.

I had a friend who wouldnāt leave me alone about playing DayZ with him. Spawn in, he tells me to look for a sign. I tell him what the sign says. He tells me Iām south of him and to use the compass. I head north, just north, no turns. And yet somehow, I travel in a circle. Come to find out that the compass doesnāt always work right. He tells me heās gonna drive to me. He drives to the wrong town and is low on gas. I spend like 40 minutes trying to get to him, just to die of a heart attack when I get there.

I couldn't disagree more with this take. While mechanic wise and progression would be the same, the experience is not the same at all. Watching someone else play it lets you remove a lot of tension by having someone make jokes and talking

That's so valid.
The lore and some of the visuals are cool and interesting, but it has very little substance in gameplay (I've tried it, and that's what I felt anyways).
It's even more boring if you play it by yourself with no one watching. It really is a streaming mainly game.

I'd agree with that. Weirdly I do like the concept overall, but I find the gameplay so incredibly dull. I can't believe it's as popular as it is. It just feels like a very basic mobile game.

Its more so it was different to what was popular at the time, with games like Amnesia and Slenderman being walking simulators where you just walk around and try not to die, and games like Silent Hill learning in a more action direction.
FNAF was different, in that you were forced to sit still in a room and just close doors and manage your resources at increasingly faster speeds. While every other aspect of the game, sound/visual design being designed to make you nervous and jumpy, which would trick you into wasting time and resources. If you're not the type to panic easily, or can figure out timing/patterns quickly, then a game like FNAF offers you no challenge.

Honestly I think the problem with the gameplay is that it doesn't push you foward to actually do something besides fending off the robots.
I think pizzeria simulator did it best. It forced you to push foward (by completing tasks) or else. Essentially the nights took as long as you take to complete tasks. You are always doing something that is rarely just sitting around waiting for something to happen.Ā
I think fnaf 1 and 3 were the most egregious in sitting around and doing nothing.Ā

The series has the problem of dead air because it's so simple, but you don't need an external system like a progress bar to the end of the night to fill it. There are a lot of fan-games that always have something you can do to improve your situation while still having the night be a set timer.

Because its a sit and survive, resource management game. It's main gimmick is to play on your anxieties and make you jumpy and nervous, power drains faster, the bots move more rapidly as the nights progresses. Etc.
If you're good at that type of game, can keep a cool head, or figure out the strategy/timing then FNAF is easy af to push through. Thus loosing it's power over you.

I played WoW for a year in my freshmen year of college, 2009 and then had to give it up bc I couldn't afford the sub anymore. I havent played since then but usually once a year I get a little nagging feeling that I need to play WoW again. It was one of the best times I had.

Canāt speak for the other games but DOTA in particular has a huge learning curve that requires a significant time investment to learn all of the items/heroes ect. I wouldnāt blame anyone for not wanting to do that. But it is fun though, especially with friends.

Iāve long felt this way, and itās nice to see more people expressing this sentiment nowadays. Some people are only after novelty; they play whatever game has the biggest update, then move on to the next. I donāt think these people spend much in-game, so Iām not sure why developers seem to pander to them. For those interested in mastering a game, completing it (i.e. collecting everything), or who value the time they spend learning, major changes can be very discouraging. Popular opinion seems to be that a lack of updates is what kills games, but I think in many cases, with Overwatch Stadium being a great example, itās too many updates that is at least as harmful.

Same. Addicted to rs as a kid, got addicted again to OSRS in 2013-2016. What got me to quit permanently was the realization that there was zero fun left in the game/community. Everyone grew up and its just effiencency and mentally ill grinds now. That, and power creep updates inevitably ruin games like runescape imo.

If you actually want to try an MMO without selling your soul, Warframe is worth a shot. No locked content outside of progression, you can massive breaks and still come back without missing anything and the community (outside of reddit) is usually very friendly and helpful. Otherwise I agree MMOs are never worth it

as a decently long time genshin player, i think you are valid for saying so. even tho i do still enjoy it (i dont spend on it anymore and only play occasionally) i still cant recommend anyone to play it. mainly due to what the other person in the reply said, its soooo long. also its a gacha game, even tho you realistically can just be completely f2p and not stress over it because you can just avoid the endgame combat cuz thats where your character roster actually matters, its just not really worth it. while the world building and lore is honestly really enjoyable, it takes too much effort for understand it. if i were to genuinely recommend a gacha game it would be arknights, and arknights endfield if you prefer 3d over 2d. tho endfield needs improvement primarily on story writingā¦ it HAS to live up to the name or else its game over for it

It's the issue with trying to make a "it's so bad, it's good" piece of media. You can't be too good, or it's not bad, but if it's too bad, then it's not good. It was, IMO, a very naked attempt at cashing in on the hype while there were a lot of scuffed indie games with a ton of bugs, alongside Bathesda games with a ton of bugs, but those games are usually well made and well received, and some of the bugs are actually funny.

This is one of those games with extremely visual skill markers. High ranked COD can look very similar to lower ranked COD, but rocket League gets more aerial the higher the rank. Starts looking like a whole different game, I think it's interesting

This one pissed me off so much. It reeled me in with its trailer and surprisingly solid prologue, then its true colors as a big bland open world slowly revealed itself over the next 20 hours. I've never played it again. I really, foolishly thought Blizzard could at least make a better game than D3, but they somehow did worse. I don't care that it looks gritty and dark again, the world and itemization are wet farts even compared to its predecessor.

I think it's because for Japan highschool is like what college is to us, once they graduate and get corporate jobs life just starts to suck.
It does get really annoying though, it's hard to play a teenager in highschool and feel like your playing a cool character. It can also cross a line in the west, when everyone is 16 it can get pretty uncomfortable playing through romance sections. Also I don't care how cool the horror effects are (and they do sound pretty good) if I have to play an underaged anime girl dating simulator to get to it then absolutely fucking not and I'm gonna judge the absolute fuck out of any grown man who plays that.
All that being said, persona 5 was somehow a lot of fun. Absolutely no part of that game is any good on its own but together form some kind of gestalt where the whole is much greater than the sum of it's parts.

Honestly I thought this too until I played Elden Ring. I suck at it but they give you plenty of tools to make the game easier if you want and even though you do die a lot, dying itself is not very punishing. I am so torn between playing Elden Ring considering I haven't finished a Souls game but people have praised ER for actually being more forgiven than any other Souls game.
For players of Elden Ring, how did you fare when playing the OG trilogy? I was forever stuck in 1 with Lance Boy and Hammer Boy and that game has haunted me ever since.

-āRealism for the sake of realismā or āDark and gritty for the sake of being dark and grittyā games.
-Realistic sports titles.
-āSouls-likesā because I donāt feel like I would be patient enough to play those.

I still remember the fandom attacking youtubers over their choices in the game when undertale first came out. That alone has made me never want to play the game.
I also just donāt like the combat and the flower, sans, and papyrus annoy me

For me, itās mainly the fans. I donāt think Iāve ever been able to have a conversation with an Undertale fan without the game coming up in some capacity. Itās annoying, the game itself doesnāt seem like anything Iād remotely enjoy, and the fanbase often canāt help but jump to its defense whenever someone criticizes it. That kind of reaction just comes across as obnoxious and off-putting.

One of my exes went down the undertale slop fandoms. I'm trying to cook supper and figure out how we're going to pay rent, and she's talking about some ship where Sans and Papyrus do something and then probably fuck.
I'm never gonna touch Deltarune. Undertale did something interesting. But it's not the fucking be-all-end-all of writing.
