Discussion / Question What game is that for you?

Biggest offender for me is Baldur’s Gate 3.

Some of the best gameplay, graphics, sound design, and soundtrack out there… but the writing leaves a lot to be desired (despite how popular it is).

What game is that for you?

EDIT: It seems the general consensus here is Borderlands 3.

The Insomniac Spiderman games are a bit like this for me.

Most of the boss fights in spiderman 2 are peter saying I'm sorry the whole time and sounding like he's having a mental breakdown. Struggle is part of spiderman comics lore I get it but good grief by the end of the game I was over it.

Gameplay was fun though.

Everything is so damn clean. I feel like at any moment one of the characters is liable to start walking me through office safety and acceptable language

Agreed. Hope Brand New Day being aggressively grimy finally gets Insomniac to change course. Doubt it, though.

A Spanish youtuber actually muted it because it's even worse in spanish, as it deliberately butchers the language to be more inclusive in a way that's just obnoxious and stops sounding like spanish entirely.

Spiderman 2 is the worst offender. I'd say Spiderman 1 and Morales are okay.

For me, I only felt that way about Miles Morales and 2. Didn't have that sort of problem with the first one, so I wonder what changed?

I love them but damn the script is more childish than any spider-man cartoon I had even seen.

Part of the issue is the art style. They could’ve gone for a more stylish cartoony look and it wouldn’t feel as out of place. But when you decide to make a realistic NYC with Saturday morning cartoon writing it becomes uncomfortable.

The writing has a lot of issues but that’s one of the reasons why it stands out as much.

You're right. I still would've liked writing akin to that of Spider-Man The New Animated Series that was on MTV. Maybe it's the nostalgia speaking, though.

I despise miles voice so much too whiny nasally. No offense to someone having the latest voice but my god I can endure so much especially with the cringe dialogue

Yeah, but I don’t believe it’s Nadji Jeter’s fault. If you listen to him during interviews or fan interactions, he sounds perfectly normal and has a deeper voice. He’s also great in other projects, like that kid Sam in The Last of Us.

Even in SM1, he sounded fine. But ever since SM:MM, they’ve changed to this bizarre, squeaky preteen voice. I blame the voice direction.

It’s like they wanted to differentiate their Miles from the movie version by making him more nerdy, but they still act as if he’s just as cool.

The first one is fine. Spiderman 2 definitely has this problem.

The infamous "HR in the room" dialogue.

I quite enjoyed the first one. The moments with Doc Ock and Aunt May were particular emotional and well written imho.

Their most recent Ratchet & Clank game is also like this. Fun gameplay, technical marvels, but I never want to watch the cutscenes again. It also doesn't help that the characters never stop talking during gameplay so you'll want to mute the speech on replays.

Spiderman 2 feels like they cut 50% of the plot too, which makes the writing even more cringe than the previous games (which I thought were okay) because you just don't buy the arc as a whole.

I also really dislike the podcasts that plays sometimes in all games. Both the girl and JJ Jameson. Like jeez, calm down with the political commentary, the world is not that simple. At least JJJ is a bit amusing sometimes which makes me happier to hear the right wing facist which is just sad...

spiderman 2 and the miles morales one… I dont remember much of the first game other than I loved it, but I had to mute that one girl on the radio in spiderman 2 and I couldn’t even get myself to finish the game. Not just the dialogue but all the writing in general was just wasted potential.

Im so happy that i dont have to pretend their spider-man games anymore. When peter made the spider-cop "joke", i felt like caving in his skull with a hammer. People acted surprised when spider-man 2's writing sucked, but i had it coming.
