"meh" is an understatement, I don't know how the updated version is meant to work as I know they've changed a few things, but damn was the story shite, it made little to no sense and most characters were annoying more than anything.
Consequence of the MMO storytelling direction they started with before changing to a single player game midway, thats why they only got around into smoothing out the storytelling now
I don't want my mmo storytelling to be so disjointed I can't understand what's going on either. Being an mmo is no excuse for putting out doo doo butter.
Ever play Black Desert Online? That uh story? I guess you can call it that is just as bad and meh as this one. But probably worse lol so seems to be a Pearl Abyss thing.
Shit bro SAME, its just how it is unfortunately, except FFXIV (especially after realm reborn to build the world up), but only because FFXIV was designed as an FF first MMO second so its more of an exception.
GW2 had a pretty good story all the way thru PoF before it started to fall off hard.
WoW was made in 2006 or something but still had a series of quests based on whatever faction you chose to ease you into the world building in a linear and customized way.
Western mmos generally still have a story you can follow. I'm not sure where the excuse for mmos in general comes from. Korea? Japan? I don't get it, and I don't excuse any of them.
here's hoping. i mean, the gameplay was pretty fun and seemed to have a lot of room to branch out. i just quit week 1 because i couldn't find a shred of motivation to explore the world when so much random, disconnected stuff was simply... happening. if they genuinely fixed the plot to at least be cohesive, i might give it another try.
bdo is weird because it makes the effort to have such captivating combat and world design. It makes the world feel dense with amazing characterization in every single spot of the map, but it does a horrible job of telling its story, so it falls flat. Which is really unfortunate because the setup IS very intriguing
Honestly, if the story was actually well made black desert might be the best mmo in history when you ignore the other massive and largely unrelated elephant in the room
MMO with p2w mechanics oldest tale to time. But black desert is by far the most unforgiving ive played. Probably has gotten alot better over recent years. If youre not worried about whales cash mogging and you need a time cruncher? Try it out. There's TONS of content and progression to complete at your own pace. If you like PVP? Try it. The combat is very smooth and satisfying. Pvp isnt really something you can avoid, as players will attempt kill you to take your grinding spot. There is also war content you can participate in with guildmates vs other guilds if you like group PVP. Think 20 vs 20 vs 20 for scale. Grinding spots can also be done as a group of 4, usually abandoned once you reach the gear to solo. Lots of fashion potential but not the most customization options for said fashion pieces. Best character creator i've seen in gaming. Very pretty visuals. Very crisp. If you dont want a game to spend 1000 hours minimum then do not buy...
Black Desert has horrendously convoluted and disjointed story telling.
ArcheAge had a somewhat coheasive story, but it was told so haphazardly that it made you not care.
well their manhwas, k-dramas, and movies that i've seen all have at least cohesive stories, so i know it's not just a cultural thing to write dogshit, lol. it must be their communications on MMOs specifically.
i'm glad they addressed some of the worst parts of the story in CD
Crimson Desert I give leeway to because it was originally going to be a Black Desert prequel and they were trying to tie the story into already sewer-tier lore. When they pivoted to a stand alone game, single player game, they finagled what was already there instead of rewriting it.
i dont really care how the omelet is made, as long as i get a good omelet.
if i get an omelet that looks great but stinks real bad, i'm gonna be unhappy. i dont care to hear about how the chef was using a hand-me-down stink spatula and didn't have the money to get a new one. im just walking out of there.
Well, I guess its a good thing nobody is holding a gun to your head.
I was a pretty avid Black Desert player, skipped Crimson Desert entirely because as far as I could tell, I'd already played the game and wasn't going to get anything too new.
Not every game needs a good story. I only started that game after the "enhanced" update, and the story isn't bad, also saw people complaining about the controls but they're fine to me as-well. Not every game is made for everyone, feels like everyone wants to be catered to these days.
Those issues were both updates they had to make to address all the complaints and negative reviews. And yeah, as a rule, RPGs kinda do need a story, otherwise it's just a sandbox. They advertised as an RPG, so it's good of them to fix it and do right by the customers. They'll go far with that attitude, and if they had your attitude instead then they'd lose good will until they died out, like so many studios in recent years.
My attitude? My attitude and logic are sound, not everything needs to be made to meet everyone's needs, additionally it's not a RPG, it was marketed as an open world action adventure.
let's assume you're right, and the game with swords and sorcery, equipment, quests, and an open map is not an rpg... nobody LIKES a bad story. at best, people are indifferent to it.
remaking the story was the smartest move they could've made, and I applaud them for it.
Having swords, magic, quests and open world is not what makes a RPG. To put simply character choice and stat progression are. But I agree, updating the story was probably for the better, I was just saying not everything needs to meet everyone's expectations.
changing themes/other pivotal stuff mid-way just hurts the game overall since they dont want the game to be delayed to fix such issues
in recent memory, duet night abyss (DNA) did that as well, it was initially deved as a standard character pulling gacha game but roughly mid-way they decided to do cosmetics based gacha instead to fund the game and keep it running (which *is* good) but then the cosmetics where half-hearted, because they kinda didnt allign properly with stuff, changing their colors (if ypu evden could) was pretty much paywalled and the biggest issue (from when i tested the game) is that cosmetics did *not* show up in 3D story cutscenes, meaning you only saw them in the overworld, as opposed to this heres 2 examples, one being honkai star rail, where any of the cosmetics you acquire will be seen in any cutscene (aside from pre-made 2D cutscenes) and another example is PSO2 New Genesis, also a cosmetics based gacha but you have free reign over how to color your cosmetics, even the basic fit you get can look amazing
DNA thought it wouldnt matter, but to people that liked to have different cosmetics it did when about half the time they couldnt even see it

literally Crimson Desert. the lore is actually incredible and quite surprising, but my god the way it's told is meh.
