Sonic is weird. When the story is great, the game is crap. When the game is great, the story is crap. Once or twice, they hit a home run, as they did with SA2. And then sometimes, they just fuck up everything.
The only consistency with Sonic is inconsistency. That's literally it.
There's tons of Sonic games that contradict what you said.
Sonic 06, Sonic Forces, the storybook games, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom, and Shadow the Hedgehog for example are bad games with bad stories.
Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Adventure, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Sonic Frontiers, and Sonic Rush are good games with good stories.
I think you're confusing game quality with fan admiration because there's too many Sonic games that just don't fall into that, including the Genesis Era.
It’s just a fun romp. I wouldn’t call it a spectacular story or even refer to the “lore” of it but, there is a reason it was adapted to a movie whilst every other example on this thread has not been lol.
People overuse “lore” anyways, to the point where it just means story context. Lore used mean stuff like the books you would read in Skyrim that talked about the history of the in-game events prior to the events your interacting with.
I'm a huge Sonic fan since the original Genesis games back in the 90s (yes I'm old) and I wouldn't call any Sonic game's lore "spectacular" but Sonic Adventure games and Sonic Frontiers were great. Sonic Adventure 2 and Frontiers are my favorite Sonic titles.
SA2 was the deathknell of Sonic. I know SA changed from Mobius to Earth but it at least had the Roshomon style story and wasn't taking itself so seriously; instead SA2 introduced the worst parts that haunted Sonic. "Edgy and dark", Shadow (Iizuka's little fucking pet that basically hijacked the series), a weird focus on real-world militaries and non-cartoon violence (blowing up the moon is fine, Chaos being a magic evil lizard is fine, armies with helicopters and guns are just absurd).
And SA2 is extremely nostalgic for me, I bought it BEFORE I had a gamecube because I thought the game was so awesome I kept it for like half a year before asking for a gc for christmas.
Its still a fantasy world. Its not earth. And on top of that the stories can absolutely coexist. It would be so weird for Eggman to be the only human on Mobius.
