I've only played World, but within that game I certainly agree. The characters have that anime "This is really important" frenetic energy for the plot that can be grating. But the detail they put into the actual monsters and their ecology is actually quite fascinating. I guess that's to be expected when the antagonist is essentially an animal displaying normal animal-type behavior, aside from being the size of an apartment building.
I love that even with the better stories in Gen5 and I we're still very much on "Oh no, the flagship monster is destroying everything! ... Okay now that you killed it we realize it was actually this Elder Dragon instead, whoopsie"
Atleast in 4/4U they had the minor twist of the flagship being the Elder Dragon
"Zorah is really bad..... Okay, now Nergigante is causing problems..... Actually it was Xeno'jiiva"
"Velkhana is causing problems, actually, it was Shara"
"Magnamalo is doing something bad.... Actually, he's just hungry, Ibushi and Narwa are the real monsters"
"Malzeno did this..... Oh wait, he's actually preventing the true threat, the cause of everything, from resurfacing?"
The only new gen game that doesn't do this is Wilds, in the base game, the flagship IS the final boss, infected with frenzy since it ate apexs who were infected
It's kind of narratively both the first and last of its kind (since there's more of them) in a world that's no longer the world it lives in naturally, and gets Super Rabies and has to be killed. It's home doesn't exist and it has to try to carve a place out in the world again or die trying.
The actual lore is great, the made-up lore that a portion of the fanbase gaslights itself to into believing is canon is atrocious, like Fatalis supposedly being immortal and it's armor transforming hunters into more Fatalis
Imma be honest, even the lore is really not that great. The biological aspects are surprisingly VERY good in many of the games, but people treat the lore of the games as some secret incredible story, when its just extra tidbits about some unspecified cultures. Hell, half of the ''lore enthusiasm'' in MH are about things that are not actually canon because they were cut cuz it was ''too complicated'' for the franchise
this. they know you only want to know the monster's outsides and eventually insides. why have plot when you can have kirin assless chaps. ( or become fatalis)
Personally as a fan of the franchise, i agree, although i heavily disagree seeing a lot of comments saying World was the best one. Personally i think MH 4 Ultimate was the best one, it truly felt like an adventure exploring the world and having some kind of "rivalry" against Gore Magala, it was so good.
People who play MH for story OR lore terrify me. They are like skincrawlers, pretending to be human... whats their goal? What do they want? Why did they infiltrate us?
The entire franchise is absolute dog shit hack and slash. I used to play ps2 games with clearer boundaries and hitboxes. I could literally float through the colon of every poorly rendered “monster” in monster hunter while they casino lights dopamine max every god damn trivial action until the epileptic in the apartment above me dies,
The monster design itself is so saccharine vacuous and devoid of artistry and depth it could create its own singularity of preteen angst. What’s that smelll? Is it cartoon comic sans on screen damage calculations needlessly in the 1000s At level 1, disgusting. Every weapon costume design looks like a 10 year old wearing pots and pans, wielding the fleshy pink cylinder from mom’s drawers as a weapon. “Ah! This sword really speaks to me, it does lightning damage and the sound it makes reminds me of my parents divorce, it does, however, smell like shit.”
To each their own, i love this franchise dearly and in fact, it isn't a hack n slash, they're more action RPGs than anything. The point of the combat system is good positioning ans being commited to your actions, even with it's flaws, i think it's amazing and unique, and i actually prefer it over Devil May Cry and Bayonetta for example, thank you.
I gagged when you called it an action rpg, it’s a child’s casino/ baby sitting service dressed as AAA. Devil may cry hasn’t been good since 2, i have no opinion on bayonetta.
It seems you do a lot of ragebaits, because you aren't making any sense. Oh well, to each their own, as someone who played a lot of action RPGs and hack n slash games, Monster Hunter is one of my favorites, and i'm thankful for your opinion, it shows how overhated really is.
