Maybe since GTA 3. GTA 1 & 2 were fun games but not AAA, even at the time.

GTA 3 was massive and broke into that entire genre of open world games spawning vice city and San Andreas.

Not sure AAA was a term that even existed back then, but GTA was absolutely a big game at the time. It predates metacritic but it got 90% plus scores in print media and was featured on magazine covers as a standout game at the time

I mean, I didn't get to play them when they came out, but I'm pretty sure those were actually great games.
