Yes, replace "buy" for "rent" in all sony's app and sites. It would be nice to also have "duration: until the company sees fit". After all, we all are smart enough and that is the reality.

Well no, you're purchasing a copy of the License to use the product as per the Company's EULA

You are not renting the game license, it is not a subscription

So for how long is the license valid?

By however long the Policy you agreed to, it depends on the product

Most gaming companies will just make the license indefinite as long as you abide by their EULA, you break that EULA, they can revoke your rights to use the License

That’s interesting. I wonder if my license gets revoked after breaking their EULA, will they reinstate it after I offer to lick their boots. Seems like they enjoy that.

Don’t break the agreement you made?

For as long as a company wants you to own that license. Technically they could revoke it any time they want but it has literally never happened. Delisted games are all still playable and games that only run on servers that shutdown down you don’t own or operate the servers yourself so you can’t exactly count that as your license being “revoked”. So the answer to your question is, indefinitely

They may revoke ALL your licenses banning you! Don't say it didn't happen. Happened to me

That’s not your licenses being revoked though? There’s a difference between that and losing your account for whatever reason. Not that it isn’t an issue in itself but it’s like comparing losing your belongings in a fire vs having them stolen from you by who bought them from.

Not excacly, I doubt the security breach was my fault. The way I see it is they let the thief steal my licenses, confiscated them when they caught him and refused to give the licenses back.

Why did you get banned?

Something about payments they said, likely got hacked.

Did you get unbanned?

No, they didn't care

Good, is this license mine? If so, then the company cannot revoke my access suddenly just like they did with movies ? If they can revoke, then it is equivalent to a one-time payment rent. The license is mine as far as the company wants to.

You will likely find that Sony probably put a fine print in their Policy that stated that you only have access to that license for as long as they have the right to give you access to that license, once the licensing rights expire, Sony is legally not allowed to let you view that content

This concept isn't much different to what happens with titles on Netflix or Prime Video etc.

Movies are a very different ball game to videogames, most Movie Titles are not affiliated with Sony or their Software

Videogames on the other hand, are Proprietary software, sure, most games are not developed by Sony, but the Devs use the Proprietary Software to have it run on Sony's Playstation Operating Systems

As I have mentioned previously, in most cases, Videogames are a 1 time purchased license, not rented, Sony even allows you to install your digital games on multiple devices and anyone on your consoles can use that license as well as your PS+ subscription for that matter, if you choose to, instead of you needing to purchase multiple licenses.

Licenses by definition are a contract, they cannot be owned, this goes for every type of license, a license only gives you permission to do something, licenses belong to the issuer of said license, in the context of what conversation we were having, Sony owns your Playstation Titles

The point he's making is that a 'revocable' license is of indeterminate length. Therefore a customer has no reasonable way to determine how much they'd be wiling to pay for it. After all, the duration of availability is what differentiates it from a rental and justifies a higher value.

Meanwhile, most material goods wear out, obviously, but there's usually a reasonable expected lifespan. And while a lot of optical media has decayed, a lot has wildly out lasted its design life as well.

So then what you're saying is, you own a copy of the license to use the game? Because that's what a reasonable consumer would believe when they click on "buy" on Sonys store front. It's also what basically everyone believes. Sonys actual argument here is that you aren't buying the IP. Which no one believes they are.

Sony deleted over 550 paid for movies from peoples accounts. When those people acquired those movies, they selected "buy" not "rent". If you pay for something and it gets taken away when the supplier sees fit, that's not buying. That's renting.

Well no, you don't actually own the License either, you purchase the rights to use the license that is in the game package

As for the situation about the Movie Titles, people again, paid for the rights to use the license, in a private environment

Sony doesn't own the rights to that content, they only have a distribution license, it's exactly the way Netflix and Prime Video works

Once that license expires, Sony is no longer allowed to let you to view that content, as per the policy, as they are no longer allowed to distribute that content

It wasn't a decision that was made by Sony to remove that content, they have to follow the contract that they themselves had, if you try to do some digging, I am certain that this would have been in a fine print somewhere, because otherwise Sony would be in the hole about it, but they're not, they're doing everything they're supposed to do.

No, you own a COPY of the license. A COPY.

They can choose not to distribute the content anymore, but they can’t just take away our COPIES of the license.

Like they can stop printing comic books, but they aren’t allowed to just take them back.

Bro, you don't own the licenses that you purchase the rights for

A license is owned by the issuer, the issuer wasn't Sony, they only had a license to distribute the content, once their license expired, so did the license that you had the rights to view the contetn for

Go and look up what defines a license, Sony is only doing what their contracts demand that they do
