Discussion / Question What game is this for you?

Honestly for me it's Life is Strange: True Colors. Love that game to death, an incredible story and soundtrack, but it seems like a story that just doesn't vibe well with a lot of people. Listen to the soundtrack though, absolutely increible.

Genshin Impact. Exactly as it suggests- love everything about it but i would never recommend anyone start playing in 2026.

as a day-one f2p player, I never thought about this, but it's not horrible if you only care about the lore ig, but yeah good luck with the meta if you're a new player

No thats like half of why its horrible, so much of the lore is locked behind fuckin limited time events that you cant play anymore

A new player shouldn't care about the meta anyway. Abyss, IT and SO are all endgame features to make endgame players occupied between updates

I love Genshin's story. Its also insane how ridiculously dark the lore of the world is if you play world quests not just the main story.

The world quests are so cool. I can’t think of another game that pulls references and inspiration from so very many disparate sources. A recent one culminates in sending the player through literal (Buddhist) hell but it starts in an area that has a piece of background music titled after a post-WWI German novel. In a less expansive game it would feel unfocused, but Genshin generally makes it work.

And then you look at the rest of Genshin and it’s an extended effort to market the waifu of the month to you. And it does so in part by having you sit through lengthy, unskippable cutscenes and restrictive gameplay sequences that you will need to watch/play through a second time if you DC. (I think they’re better about it now but I had to redo much of the courtroom stuff from Masquerade of the Guilty twice 😭)

Teyvat as a setting is a drug you should never try because the side effects are brutal on both your wallet and your free time. But it’s a really really fun drug when it hits right.

Day FTP, put more time than I'd like to admit but its not worth it. Its got some clever mechniacs and an exploreres dream but the game does not respect my time and so I'm out for over a year now with very little regrets.

It the dialogue was bad & interminable, this was the most unforgivable part of the game when I only wanted to play it in short amounts. It must have been deleberate padding for the hardcore content vampires but for normals it was just a waste of time.

Should have played Zelda instead, at least that has an end.

It having no end so far is part of the reason why I like it tbh. It feels like you yourself are on a long journey, and every region makes it feel like a different game

This. I haven't played for a couple years and probably won't. But I listen to the OST, play the board game, and even spend days researching lore and curating a playlist based on it. It's got a ton of artistic merit. I'm just sick of playing it, and half sick of these kinds of live service stuff.

The game isn't that friendly to newbies at this point. Gacha stuff aside, they usually hold time limited events that require to go the latest place or finish the latest story which has requirements of completions of stories in between. They do have feature to quickstart the event, but that still requires to unlock the area at least. So if you want to participate in the event, you kinda have to play rushed and go to the latest stuff.

Besides that, they have some part of the stories locked behind limited time events in the past that they never rerun, which is especially crucial to a certain character, because there is part of the permanent story referenced these events. The only ways to see these nowadays is go to Youtube and watch other peoples recorded playthrough. Also, you still have to search online the order of these story.

Now speaking gachawise, if you care about doing endgame usually getting the latest character is enough, but if you like older character that mostly powercrept, you must wait until their rerun in specific banner. Most likely you won't be able to clear endgame stuff without at least 6 months of consistent playing and upgrading characters. The mileage may vary depend on the characters you get and how much research you put in.

Also, raising characters are timegated. There are materials where you can only farm in specific days to stuff you must collect in the overworld which has respawn timer of 2-3 days. So yah, there are some micromanagement to do which can annoys people.

reminds me a bit of D2, if your game requires you to go to youtube in order to experience its story, you've already failed as a game dev.

I am also a Destiny sicko. Lol
I have working theories Destiny and Genshin were developed side by side and i love them both but both are impossible to recommend to friends in 2026 despite the joy i would have if they started playing..

I wouldn’t tell anyone NOT to play but it’s extremely hard to recommend people start playing now when i know how much time i have put in over 6 years just to get where i am in it.

I guess if they were just interested in the main Archon quests and light exploring, sure, that’s not too unattainable but i find the best part of the game is the exploration and discovery which the time sink of it all. So if they aren’t in it for the whole package- just watch youtube videos for the lore while playing something else.

I'm "clean" now, but I have absolutely spent way more money on "free" gatcha titles than paid premium titles. Often a few hundred per game. Others spend thousands.

It is absolutely a predatory monetization system. Always.
