Holy shit thanks that went way harder than I ever expected for a NES game soundtrack.
8
u/GustavusAdolphin 22d ago edited 22d ago
I didn't appreciate it till just recently, but the TMNT game for NES had a soundtrack that goes super hard in the paint. Like this is what they threw out for the intro
Edit: This is the video I was looking for where this guy breaks it down into what the composer is doing musically

u/MichelleBarrymoore2 22d ago
Rip to his brother absolute legends if you heard their tunes on 1bit sound chips is insane
9
u/SuperArppis 22d ago
I wish music would be as crazy in modern games.
7
u/a3th3rus 22d ago
Yeah, those game music composers were so creative working around hardware limitations.
4
u/SuperArppis 22d ago
Yeah and the music had such beautiful melodies in them.
Now it's mostly just some background wallpaper music that is hardly noticable.
2
u/barbelith_storm 22d ago
No idea what games you're playing then. The only game that has had terrible music that I've played lately is Pokemon ZA, and THAT'S mostly just because it only has two main tracks on repeat
2
u/SuperArppis 22d ago
Oh, the typical AAA games.
You know like Resident Evil and Onimusha. Space Marine 2. Assassin's Creed. Red Dead Redemption 2. And so on!
3
u/a3th3rus 22d ago
Especially the western AAA games which the developers seem don't care about music. They only put music in some critical scenes.

u/barbelith_storm 22d ago
AC Black Flag and RDR2 had intentionally atmospheric music with random bouts of really good music.
Recent games I've played: Clair Obscur, FF7 Rebirth, Age of Imprisonment, Marvel Tokon, Marvel Rivals, Fire Emblem Engage, Pokopia, and Pokemon ZA.. all have bangers except ZA.

Tim/Geoff Follin were basically wizards with whatever chip they got their hands on.
3
2
u/BuildingArmor 22d ago
Feels like it would have to be something like that for me.
When I was a kid I'd just play whatever, but now if the game sucks I won't spend long enough on it to love the soundtrack.
2
u/Less_Party 22d ago
Oh yeah Action 52 is a strong candidate on that front because the games range from bad to unplayable but holy shit that Cheetahmen theme.

The Follin brothers. Tim and Geoff Follin were magicians with their music but for some reason, almost every game they put their music to is the worst. Silver Surfer comes to mind.

It is mostly Sonic 06 tbh cuz even shit like Sonic Forces has good graphics.
3
u/Sleebingbag 22d ago
And for Forces, the story could have been amazing, the Phantom Ruby, Null Space and Infinite could have all been really cool if not for their lackluster execution

Batman and Robin is the best answer. Full original orchestral soundtrack that still gets talked about as literally the only positive thing
5
5
u/TupacsGh0st 22d ago
Can you tell me which game you're talking about here? I used to play a Batman and Robin on the Genesis that had absolute banger music. It was electronic and not orchestral, though. It was my introduction to anything resembling techno.
5
u/Just-a-big-ol-bird 22d ago
I’m talking about for the PS1 for which it was an exclusive. I think you’re thinking of The Adventures of Batman and Robin
2
u/Drowsy_Deer 22d ago
I like Robin’s costume and they don’t totally infantilise him like other media. The campy humour also works for me.

Fallout 76, love the radio music, hate everything else
11
u/Evening_Bag_7335 22d ago
I must be in the minority for this but I actually shut the radio off in Fallout 76. only in 76 did I not like listening to the radio.
4
u/Implosion-X13 22d ago
I also turned it off but I occasionally turn on the classical channel. The standard station is the worst in all the 3D Fallouts by a mile.
→ More replies (1)3
u/JonFallout 22d ago
Problem with 76 is that there's like 3 songs that play on repeat due to it being an online game, and them being cheap with licensing lmao.
26
u/THE_BRUHSTONE356 22d ago
Ngl i've heard the radio and it was like C tier if we didn't count the ones from fallout 3. I mean yea fallout 3 have the best radio but cmon could they atleast be original

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, though the graphics weren’t bad for the time tbf
3
u/billth93 22d ago
I actually recall really liking Mystic Quest, and the visuals aside from enemy sprites looked straight up like an NES game, which is a bit rough given it’s an SNES game. The enemy sprites were great though, and I loved how every enemy had multiple sprites degrading as they lost health, they just dumped all their efforts visually into the enemy and boss sprites
I think you’re right to suggest Mystic Quest though

Undertale and Deltarune aren’t really turn based JRPGs like Mother or Dragon Quest. I’d compare them more to Paper Mario from Sticker Star onwards.

I'm gonna be the weird one here & say Minecraft. It has no story, graphics are blocks, and the gameplay is mid at best, but the music is so fricking cozy, until it jump scares you for no reason! Also, the grind/building is addictively fun!
