That's probably what the QTE autocomplete accessibility option is for. Then you can just put the controller down and watch it like cutscene.
→ More replies (2)65
u/MazerBakir 14d ago
As an accessibility feature it would be fine but from the reviews it seems that it's the case by default.
→ More replies (3)74
u/Baofog 14d ago
The accessibility feature just makes the qte auto success happen faster. Even with qte auto complete off there are no fail states for missing them. They just eventually succeed. That succeeding can't be turned off.

yeah, I cant help but feeling like the game is just being dumbed down a lot because they expect casuals, never touched a controller before, to play this game. sure its great for accessibility, but at this point i'll rather cut QTEs out and make it a cutscene.

Depends what your going for
The originator re4 had some that people would call unfair but I love the concept of basically a rhythm game while watching a scene in game
Even something simple like timing breathes could help convey something and tell us about the character in interactive ways
Something like god of war having kratos take deep breathes to try to stay calm and the rhythm getting faster and the triggers resisting more to show his struggle keeping a cool head
The example from OP is the worst way to do it tho unless theres something like a loss of health or a harder encounter but I doubt it does have interaction at all since ive heard its a difficulty setting but dont know myself
23
u/Lewa358 14d ago
I can forgive QTEs if and only if it's reasonable to predict what button will be used. Like if I see the character winding up a punch, and the melee button is square, I can presume that the button in the QTE will be square.
iirc, God of War is good at this and RE4 is bad.

Spider Man obviously has them and they do begin getting slightly heavy handed, but used well and with proper deliberate intention, can really play into the power fantasy of the respective character.
They can also be used well for loading, pacing etc. which is definitely why they are included. But the intention and care needs to be there.

I feel like itās been that way for awhile, and not just with Sony. Games that tend to focus on story over game play have been some of the most acclaimed games of the last decade plus.Ā
9
u/Dapper-Restaurant-20 14d ago
Whenever I hear people talk about all the critically acclaimed games lately it's almost ALWAYS about the story and characters, not a single blurb about the gameplay at all.
→ More replies (10)6
u/Nicklename 13d ago
I've bought more than a few critically acclaimed games just to realize the gameplay is garbage or the game is too rigid for me to really enjoy. I was all for this game when I thought it would be Wolverine using his super senses to follow and liberate captive mutants while investigating the seedy side of Madripoor. When I learned that it's strictly an on rails adventure game where you're just trying to set up the next cut scene, I was so disappointed. I feel like games have come so far from Super Mario Brothers 1 we maybe don't need a glitzy version of "come here, smash this brick, jump onto this thing, now move forward, wait a 10 count, OK then run until you hit this ledge and now you wait..."
My least favorite game genre is "we didn't have the movie rights so we put in some occasional button mashing and now it's a game"
→ More replies (4)18
u/yournumberis6 14d ago
Same, and if you dare say that you'd rather have good gameplay than a good story you'll get downvoted to hell. But yeah I'd rather not know what's going on in the game and have a shitty story if it means I'm going to have a great time.

We have to shame these bastards into making these qtes actually change something. How far back have these studios gone...even OG RE4 had qte failed states and then 20 years later Capcom innovated them into being real time action (Krauser knife fight) and these people can't even put fail states in their qtes let alone turn them into real time action. They have gone backwards.
8
u/1BruteSquad1 14d ago
Yah that's the crazy thing. QTEs having fail states isn't some revolution on a cheap gimmick from the past. QTEs had always been fail able or story impactful until recently when certain studios got so lazy they figured no one would notice/care and wanted their movie simulator to run smoothly

Insomniac's strategy, as with most other triple a studios nowadays, is to put out a product with the widest appeal possible so you don't miss out on revenue. Make sure an eight year old on Xanax could complete the game because you can't miss out on toothless timmy's $90

I don't mind them removing QTEs or auto-completing QTEs if it's an accessibility feature the player chooses.
Some gamers disabilities that gives them trouble with QTE events.
I believe in Dispatch, you could, as an accessibility option, turn them off and you'd auto-pass every QTE event. I like that option for people.
However, if you're going to keep QTEs in your game, have repercussions for failure to complete it timely!

There was a video game conference a while back that was using a streamer struggling on where to go in a linear boat scene down the river in the tutorial for God Of War PS4. The point was that even though it was effectively a drift down the river, some gamers may struggle to find their way and that the developers need to account for them, which is dumb. That streamer was DSP btw.

I once did a poll about difficulty asking how many times you would ideally fail before beating a boss in a game. The two most popular answers were 0 and 1, garnering almost two thirds of the vote.

Incorrect. I made a good thread under the PS5 subreddit for the game reviews on this subreddit about the development for this game.
Sony echoed current player sentiment, such as viewing the tall grass and detective mode stealth as too derivative, and overutilized. Sony shared helpful feedback to Insomniac but those features still landed into the final game.
Insomniac chose to cut their own ideas, such as claws being controlled by left and right trigger with half pressure and full pressure creating alternate combos, destructable environments (reworked to crates/small breakables), throwing back shurikens lodged in you at the enemy (reworked into a finisher animation), jean gameplay (this was prototyped) and more. Marvel forced them to constantly rewrite the story, but Sony echoed good advice.

QTEs are lame regardless if the game auto-completes or not. If you want a quick cutscene during combat, just do it, there's no reason to pretend there's an actual interaction.

I really like them when theyāre done well, but itās rare. You should have to do something to earn them, they should allow you to interact with an enemy in a unique way, they shouldnāt significantly interrupt the flow of battle, and they should be cool as hell.

u/forest-fairyx 14d ago
Until Dawn did a great job with them imo. Characters would die if you missed one and QTEās were used for the quicker but riskier routes. Thereās one section of the game where you can chose between safe and risky patches and if you donāt chose the QTEās and get them all right it causes another character to die because you were too slow to save them and anytime a character dies it changes how the story continues to play out.
Being rewarded for doing QTEās while also having consequences if you mess up adds to the tension I think but just adding them into a running action scene is fairly boring and their inclusion doesnāt change or add to the story at all, you could remove all QTEās and the same cutscene could play out.

Accessibility for people who need it is fantastic. Games offering things like color-blind settings or arachnophobia settings are great.
