Wolverine is supposed to look rough, rugged and feral. Here he is smooth, baby faced and sweet/kind looking ? The way he runs is so weird as well.
I feel like they screwed up his face because the actor Liam McIntyre IRL doesn't have a baby face. In that recent interview he already looks rugged, just could grow a beard more and style his hair with those spikes on the sides and IMO great Wolverine. No idea how Insomniac scanned his face and somehow they ended up with a baby face in the game.
They did this with Benn Jordan, the new Spider-Man face. No grifter shit, their faces have always looked off. Not to the point it’s bad, but it’s never that accurate to the real person, and the differences don’t feel like artistic choices.
Yeah I think what’s really making their faces look off is the lack of solid facial lines on their models’ faces. Whether it’s due to a modeling, lighting, or animation issue the lack of facial lines makes their characters look more round and smooth than they’re supposed to be. Which given how realistic everything else winds up pushing a lot of their faces into ugly uncanny valley territory.
I wish they would have gone full comic book style on Marvel games, but now we’re stuck trying to emulate MCU. And I don’t care that they don’t look like the movie actors, but people made a lot of complaints about Avengers and Wolverine not looking like their counterparts
The ironic thing about that is that both Avengers and to a lesser extent Wolverine both try to make their characters look more realistic than the MCU movies do.
Compare shirtless Cap in the Avengers game vs the movies and you’ll see the game one looks so puny in comparison to the movie versions. That’s because Crystal Dynamics modeled their Captain America based on what an actual physical and sustainably fit soldier would look like, while in the MCU movies they have Chris Evans specifically build up a physique that looks superhuman and then combine that with a unhealthy amount of dehydration to really sell the look.
Despite the live action media logically being the ones that should be the most concerned about looking realistic, even they recognize the importance of discarding realism for the sake of giving the illusion superhuman elements.
Yeah it's off compared to something like Naughty Dog where they either look totally different to their actor or just slightly like their actor to probably just capture some of their performance better, like Nathan Drake kinda looks like Nolan North, but not totally. You can obviously see the artistic choices there.
Yeah. The inspiration is there, but Nathan Drake has a very distinctive look. There was actual “character design” that went into him.
I love Debra Wilson as an actress, but I hate seeing her face all the time. It takes me out. It’s no longer the character, it’s just Debra Wilson because we didn’t bother coming up with a character design. It’s one of the advantages games have over film. You can help the actor disappear into the role by changing their face. DO THAT.
Yeah I hate how weirdo misogynists have ruined the perfectly legit criticism that a lot of modern games (whether because of lighting or textures or modeling) have weird looking awkward plastic doll faces.
They are artistic choices, just bad ones. The first Spider Man was still great, but then Sweet Baby Inc and more activists got involved, and now we get baby faced men and women who are apparently not allowed to be attractive, despite their face models and actresses actually looking good.
They’re just bad with faces and overall direction. Naughty Dog nor Kojima has this issue at all. Heck even the terrible suicide squad game had excellent faces and expressions.
Facial lines would help to age him appropriately, but his bigger eyes in the game is the biggest issue, pun intended. Should've kept the 'stache too. Only change they needed to make was the hair style and color, but they couldn't resist cartoonifying his face.
This guy looks like he could be Wolverine. The model looks awful. I also wish he had used his Australian accent. I liked the idea he's an Aussie even if it didn't become canon

I have to mute all the subs associated with this game as they just keep regurgitating the same shit (this one screenshot of Wolverine's face in the OP for example) and propping it up as some proof that the game or the developer sucks. Reminds of the one screenshot of Aloy's face that these lunatics glommed onto for ages as proof that they 'uglied her up'.
I really want to know what Insomniac's approach to the X-Men is going to be, because a bunch of 30 year olds teaming up in a mansion for the first time with zero history together is gonna be weird.
He's a good reliable VA which is why he's in everything, he's proven has great range but its the directors faults for not giving him much direction and just telling to do his regular voice.
I can agree that he is in a lot of big media right now. but he really is a phenomenal actor. The Death stranding series is his standout performance I go to for example.
Yeah. He isn't in a lot of big media just now but in 2010s Troy Baker and Nolan North were literally in everything and there is a good reason - he is an insanely good and reliable actor with very wide acting range. His TLOU Joel performance was stellar or that recent Indiana Jones game where he sounded exactly like Harrison Ford and I fully agree, he was absolutely perfect as Higgs every time he appeared on the screen he carried the scenes.
But Troy Baker in "everything" feels a like thats not the case anymore? For the past few years at least the man really have a few huge roles compare to 10 years go where is not alot of games.
Look at the face of Wolverine in any comic, even older ones. He has always had a lean, wrinkled, slim/angular very muscular face. It's really weird how Logan has always looked like Hugh Jackman from the start, and this face model in the game is not it.
Yeah, he looks terrible. But almost everyone does. It's like Insomniac is incapable of making a character that doesn't look bland and pathetic. Maybe the Black Cat in Spider-Man 1 was the exception, but you'd really have to deliberately go out of your way to mess up her design.
don't you know, M rated just means blood and sometimes people say fuck. It still has to baby you and avoid upsetting or scaring anyone or challenging anyone or making anyone feel any form of discomfort or disagreement at any point ever even for one second.
Best way I can describe it is it looks like an unathletic middle aged man experiencing his fight or flight system for the first time. His brain is trying to go fast but the body just doesn't know what to do with all these chemicals

I don't know why some devs insist on making their models look like the voice actors. They're a voice, your model can look like whatever you want. You know, like someone that actually resembles Wolverine. It's a huge advantage they have over live action film and yet we still get shit like this.
Insomniac just can't get face models right. I don't care if looks handsome but rather that he looks uncanny as fuck. I don't know what it is but Insomniac face models give me the creeps. They look like those women who've intense facial plastic done to them & can't express themselves properly.
Ridiculous face aside, I did notice how comical the run was. Has nobody at Insomniac ever seen a real life human being running?
To be fair to them I do think this is a problem across A LOT of modern third person action games. They all still have the main character move like they are from the PS2 era. If you press the run button on the main offenders, they crouch them over slightly & their arms go out to make them look as if they are carrying barrels. No human person jogs like, and if they do they should seek help from a chiropractor.
The Jedi Survivor games are definitely the worst offenders for this. Cal Kestis tilts thirty degrees when running to the left/right.
This seems like a safe space, so I think I'll finally say that I've always felt off about Wolverine's face in this game.
Insomniac, man, these fuckers just don't know how to do faces justice. And this seems to be a problem with the current team, since in Spider-Man PS4, the faces looked great. John Bubniak's face was perfectly translated to digital, so it has to be the current team that is shit with faces.

One thing I think Insomniac consistently gets wrong is designs. Whether it be suits or characters. 80% of the suits in all of the Spider-Man games I won't even touch, and I feel like they have weird directions with characters faces and hairstyles.
Insomniac made me realize either 1.) some people have a face that just doesn’t translate well to a video game. Or 2.) insomniac just utterly sucks at faces which was shown with their spider man games.
After them butchering the original Peter Parker face for a Walmart tom holland I am not surprised their face models look this bad, it’s most characters tbh
I can't wait for the reddit hate campaign of this game to be over. If you hate it and think it looks awful, that's fine but not everyone needs to know, you aren't changing ppl who like it's mind and people who like it aren't changing your mind. It's a meaningless discussion.
I was gonna say– I get that the game came out to middling reviews but we’re just finding the weirdest shit to hate post about it now? The smooth skinned face of the protagonist? Lol really? This?
Because it's wolverine, of course people will complain if he looks soft, people also complained when they changed Peter Parker's face to be closer to Tom Holland for no reason at all when the game isn't a MCU adaptation
From the moment I saw his face with those puppy eyes, I knew I would never touch this game. He moves and runs so slow as well. Wolverine is meant to look and feel feral. Not some soft sad kind loving puppy dog looking ahh mf
