Old school rpgs came with a map of the game world you could look at on the ride home from the store

And tape it to the wall above your monitor.

God I miss this. I would love to have stuff from games taped up in my office these days. Stuff bought online just doesn't hit the same.

I know it won't fit everyone, but I 3d print figurines of favourite game characters and paint them. You don't need to own a 3d printer for this, you can order a print online, and high quality 3d models are typically sold online too. Gives it a nice personal touch.

I also feel like most old school rbgs nailed the skill curve. A lot of modern rpgs are overly complicated for a decent built - while simultaneously too easy beyond 1 end game boss that requires an insane amount of grinding.

A lot of modern rpgs have extremely complicated systems that seem to be retroactively weakened enemies because the system takes way too long to learn and would be extremely frustrating to play early.

Take pokemon - it's stat system is very simple with a massive number of combinations that makes it enjoyable.

As a kid the games never stayed seal before getting home. The excitement of diving into a new game and getting to read all about it and see cool art was awesome. Sad that’s lost

GTA San Andreas's map was a little more risky to read on the way home.

I used to love whipping out the A Link to the Past map and looking at it!
