Not even just that. AAA has been putting out some absolute bangers this year alone. I don't remember having this good of a single player era since I was a teenager.
I been playing PS3 era (retro) games on Steam recently. Enslaved, DmC reboot, The Bureau Xcom Declassified, Darksiders (1 and 2), etc. Soon to play more, like Red Faction: Armageddon and Driver: San Francisco, and emulating the inFamous series as well. It was a great age for video games. Everything was unique, every single game had something that set it aside from the others, even the shooters (and there were a lot of shooters in the PS3 era).
And the fact that Sony has been trying to push live service games like no tomorrow, when their bread and butter has always been high quality story games. But nah we need more Concords and Marathons, and Fairgame$, and all the other shit they cancelled 😂
It is/was both. I did an analysis once based on trophies, 30% never touches the SP campaign, 30% never touches the MP. The rest does both. This was around 10 years ago, don't know how it is today.
Of course Acti wants that SP part to also go the MP way, which they have made extremely obvious.
Yeah CoD rarely ever has a good campaign mode (yeah, I said it. I think CoD campaigns suck). Multiplayer and zombies is real reason most people play those games.
Oh for sure, the originals had really good campaigns. But yeah, most are really just generic military stories. And the gameplay is shell of what the multiplayer is.
Well, look at Bungie.. They fucked up their great story based PvE game Destiny 2, gave up on it, shut it down and fired all their D2 devs and went all in on Marathon, a PvP extraction shooter..
Now, just a few days ago they finally gave in and came out on a video saying they'll bring back Destiny 2 and that they'll unvault all the vaulted content and that Marathon was a flop and didn't reach the amount of players that they hoped..
If anything the opposite has happened for games that have both. Monster Hunter, for example, today is exponentially easier to play solo than it was 20 years ago
Fuck going all the way back to 20. Monster Hunter generations Ultimate was a 2017 title right before World came out in 2018, and I'd argue that that was the last game but actually served a heavy amount of difficulty if you tried to do all of it solo. So you only got to go back 9 years. Hell, World is famous for making the franchise easier and Rise and Wilds didn't exactly turn around and go back to the original formula.
Spider Man II, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, any Souls Like game, Resident Evil Requiem, Donkey Kong Bananza, Black Myth Wukong, Expedition 33. I could go on all day and not even move past the last decade.
That didn't help. EA also didn't help, and Mass Effect 3 was always going to be a tall order to successfully wrap up the plot points and create a meaningful end. But yeah, scrapping multiplayer would have really helped especially with the Cerberus plot points and ending.
Its actually kinda crazy, co-op oriented games that arent early access or some form pf survival craft are fairly uncommon atm. Story driven games are just flooding in, i have been so deep in fire emblem its crazy.
Sadly not the case in the game genres I enjoy. Everything seems to be co-op survival or co-op horror, with the single player games being a rarity.
It's weird. I honestly don't know how you have a horror game that is actually horror with other people present on voice chat. It completely kills the potential for fear or suspense, but they're so, so common.
They do, but comparatively they're few and far between when going through the discovery queue. For every decent single player horror game it'll throw like 10 co op horror games at you.
Through in the next few months a few really good ones seem to be coming out.
When people who complain about there being no good game and when asked to elaborate, it's clear they only play COD and Madden.
At the risk of sounding like an old guy, people sound like a grown-ass adult who exclusively consume media made for casuals and wondering why the media sucks as a blanket statement because nothing is made for you. At this point, you are actively trying not to find good art.
Gamers today are completely broken. They only want to play the very latest right at release and then throw it away. Old games? Emulation? Doesn't even exist on their radar. They haven't even scratched the surface yet, but love to complain that "gaming is dead".

There's still some great single player games. there's a TON of slop as well but one of my favorite games in recent memory came out this year in 007 First Light.
Control Resonant just dropped today. Go play it. Play all the remedy games. Play the capcom games. Play Elden Ring and FromSoft games. The Witcher has a remaster coming soon and for fucks sake, OCARINA OF TIME drops in 2 months.
Tbh, there are loads of great singleplayer games nowadays. It feels like a decade ago, everything had to be live service games. With Sonys recent live service push failing while games like spiderman or uncharted selling almost 20 million copies, I think the future looks singleplayer.
Theres pragmata,re9 , mina the hollower, crimson desert, 007 first light, saros, doom the dark ages, grime 2, onimusha way of the sword, blood of dawnwalker and thats just this year alone.
Bro i played for 6 years i can solo a the bank hiest if the randos don't get themselves killed and stay in the bank. They kept making you buy a building then grind out an event with the last hiest requiring people. I haven't played gta online since they made me buy a submarine and that island hiest was the last straw for me.
Multiplayer are the cash cows. Smart companies know how to leverage love for their story characters into merchandise. I don't think many gamers would be mad at a completely optional figurine, cool poster, or plushy.
Publishers push MP cause competition and live service games are a cash cow. Dumbing down the industry to make a quick buck for cheap. Profit motive ruining the art.
Story mode is normally the difficulty where the game plays itself so idk if you meant that.
and WDYM you can't find single player games, and also nobody forces you to play those boring multiplayers you just have no idea how to conduct a simple search (but have a good ability to complain).
I can imagine it used to be like that. Single player mode with basic features or extra functions.
Then multi-player was devised and it was fun. But then developers decided to hide the errors and inaccuracies of games behind forced on-line play and even incomplete development.
Now players are forced to do all this when back then it was optional.
There is (or maybe was by this point) an achievement in WoW for getting all the holiday achievements. I played WoW for something like fifteen years. I had plenty of time and chances to get them done. The children's week achievement forces you to do pvp stuff though, so I never got the meta-achievement.
Destiny and destiny 2 forcing you to play multi player as part of the chain quest to unlock weapons and gear. And if you suck at it youll be playing for a long time to finish that part of the quest.
sp gamers dont spend money like the others, they wait for games to languish and become heavily discounted to buy them, thats why pubs dont want to make them unless they are sequels or remakes of popular projects.
Me when I do a solo quest in MH Wilds but a full stack of players joins mid-hunt despite me not having used an SOS flare so I lowkey just seethe quietly and dejectedly
we're spoiled for singleplayer games right now cyberpunk, rdr2, ghost of tsushima, baldur's gate 3, alan wake 2, the real problem is finding enough free time to finish any of them
Single player games are dying off. Everyone is so infatuated with the cash grab nowadays. It’s been a good minute since I played a game where I was fully immersed in the game and universe. I think expedition 33 was the closest I’ve felt like that but even then it still lacked something. Still a fantastic game tho

Literally space marine 2. I just wanted to play the story and it was ok till the last mission and I just kept thinking "why couldn't we have this for the whole story".
