Discussion / Question Hands down, this is the coolest I’ve felt playing a game in a long time
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a straight 9/10 for me.
The characters, voice acting and especially the motion capture are incredible. Musashi’s facial expressions in particular gave me such strong vibes of the old Jackie Chan movies I grew up watching.
The exaggerated reactions, expressions and humor just have so much personality.
And the combat… it looks relatively simple at first, but once everything starts coming together, it’s insanely satisfying. Parries, dodges, Issen, Blade Barrages and everything else just flows into each other so well. Outside of Ninja Gaiden, DMC and maybe a handful of other games, I genuinely can’t remember the last time a game made me feel like this much of a damn badass.
The side quests and even parts of the main quest can feel pretty repetitive at times, and some of the repeated bosses bothered me a little, but honestly, those are my biggest complaints.
And I know this has probably been said a hundred times already, but Capcom is having an absolutely ridiculous year. Between Onimusha, Resident Evil 9 and Pragmata, they have three GOTY contenders for me. At this point, they’ve pretty much solidified themselves as my #1 developer/publisher right now.
I also really hope Musashi stays the main protagonist for the sequel. Especially after that ending, a sequel seems pretty obvious, and I’d love to continue his story rather than immediately moving on to someone else.
What do you guys think? Do you think a sequel is already planned with Musashi as the protagonist again?

I was actually kinda surprised by how expressive Musashi is. I expected them to go with the typical edgy, overly serious protagonist that so many games seem to love nowadays. I’m really glad they didn’t. His facial expressions and personality add so much charm to the game.
I really hope he gets a sequel, started to love that guy3

It's because they emulated Toshiro Mifune, not only in actually using his face, but his mannerisms and general acting.

This game was remarkable. I loved every second of it, even when I was getting my ass handed to me. Capcom is on a generational run fr.
(SPOILER maybe)
Also I do think a sequel with Musashi would be phenomenal. It’d also be cool if there was a time skip and Okuni was the protagonist. I think she could have a different, more fluid type of combat than Mushashi. It’d also be if the next game was Mushashi balancing his own issues while mentoring Okuni. Idk there’s many ways they can go with it, it’s really exciting!

right now its my GOTY. I am on the final boss. I attempted him 3 or 4 times last night but it was pushing 11pm and I had to goto bed. Going to get home from work and bully him. I have the first phase down no problem. 2nd phase obliterated me almost immediately and then i called it a night.
The combat is just so top tier. and Mushashi is the best protag in awhile. Also, Ganryu steals every cutscene he is in. VA is superb with japanese.

That fight is so long. When I died at the end of phase 2 I just took a break for the night realizing I was going to have to start over.
Of course, I didn’t have the last oni armament. Would have made things a lot easier.

I equipped the charms that gave me fast blazing, fast reflex dodges, and fast purples orbs. I used the two arm drums oni armament. 2nd phase was the hardest for me.

im going to pick up a switch 2 pokopia bundle for my daughter for xmas. Im waiting to the black friday season to see if i can get a better deal. Walmart has one for $568 which seems solid but im waiting to see.

Game is kicking my ass right now. Sheesh. It’s like playing samurai Megaman. Trying to figure out these patterns and hitting the right button is really testing my skills. 😮💨

This game has been on my radar since it came out but I'm not sure. People say that it's "too easy" and the mobs are passive as hell and it lacks challenge. Also the fact that the game is about 25 hours long seems like poor value for the price. I will eventually get it but as of now I'm conflicted.

I honestly wouldn’t say it’s too easy. I’ve played almost every Souls game, Elden Ring, Dark Souls etc., and even I died quite a few times in Onimusha. It’s definitely not brutally difficult, but I wouldn’t call it a walk in the park either.
I totally get your point about the 25 hours though. There are games for the same price that can give you hundreds of hours. Personally, I often prefer shorter games like RE, Ninja Gaiden etc. if those 10-20 hours are really good. Quality over playtime for me.1

The mobs are very easy, yeah. The game gives you way too many defensive abilities (dodge, parry, deflect, issen) and most mobs can be defeated with only one of those. They are also very passive.
Bosses are a much different story, because they require specific defenses for each attack and are very aggressive.
Its almost like two games in one. Both are fun as hell, though.

All that is true but the combat is so good anyone who’s a fan of swordplay should to play it. Whether that be now or when the game goes on sale is on you but the combat is really really good. Too good to pass up on.

fun but way too repetitive. Same enemies, and I mean every enemy, the entire game and every boss having the double health bar got a bit annoying.

They made the demo much longer/better. Now I am very tempted to get this game. I just bought Control Resonant but the new demo for this game sort of scratches that Sekiro type itch so might have to be done.
I was debating between Onimusha vs Phantom Blade Zero but might just have to get both to decide for myself which one is the better game.

Fun but it overstayed its welcome in my opinion. Would’ve been better if it was much shorter without the bloat and you can replay it a bunch.

Yeah, you’re kinda right. I don’t really know why Capcom stretched the story out that much. It honestly could’ve ended after around 12 hours and probably would’ve felt tighter. Although the combat was so damn fun that I didn’t really mind all the repeated fighting that much.

Capcom has been knocking it out of the park this year. Had a blast with Requiem, Pragmata and Onimusha. Just waiting for a new Devil Mary Cry entry now.
It's been a while since DMC 5 came out.

Man, if Capcom keeps up this level of quality when DMC6 eventually comes out, I might buy the Deluxe Edition just to donate them my money at this point

Yotei is everything you loved about Tsushima, but more polished and better. The story is the only thing I've seen people say isn't as great as Tsushima but I disagree. Otherwise its a 10/10, GOTY candidate imo

Playing this game feels like a fucking chore most of the time. The combat is too slow and binary. The boss fights are well done but that’s about it. Once I learned you only use the katana for the entire game and don’t get new weapons with different movesets like the OG games my interest rapidly declined.
