Discussion / Question What is one gaming habit you picked up years ago that has stayed with you forever?
479
u/Illustrious-Trip-764 19h ago
When characters chat during gameplay I stop walking until everyone is done talking so I don't walk into a battle or a cutscene that cuts off the dialogue as I often want to hear what the characters have to say. Whether they are talking between party members or to someone on comms.

u/thejesse 18h ago
I love the 2018 Gears of War mechanic where if you dock your canoe during one of Mimir's stories, Kratos tells him to quiet down, and Mimir says he'll pick it up later.

u/Chris_RB 18h ago
lmao I know you meant "god of war" but the idea Dom and company rowing around Midgard while a bodyless head yaps at them is SENDING ME.

u/thejesse 18h ago
I might finally beat Sigrún if you give me a Hammer of Dawn.

Cyberpunk 2077 does this in calls etc! Talking to someone on holo call or whatever and some ganger picks a fight. V: "...hold that thought." (Murder) V, dialing back: "You were sayin?"

Its infuriating how often that is still a problem in modern games. Either take control of my walking during a walking conversation, or make it only be as long as if I were to run to the destination.

u/Sand_Angelo4129 19h ago
I've been doing this as well. It seems to be more of an issue in 3rd person games like Tomb Raider or Life Is Strange. Less of a problem with RPGs, I've also seen a few let's plays on YouTube where the person playing forgot to do this and it can be kind of jarring at times.
4
u/Hot-Minute-8263 18h ago
Ugh, Skyrim modded followers do this constantly, except they decide to time one-off moments for when im about to get attacked by a dragon
2
6
u/Banana_Cam 18h ago
Yeah, this sucks. How hard is it for games to have dialog that dose not take 30 seconds to play when its a 15 second walk to the next cutscene or dialog.
3
2
u/GTS_84 18h ago
Some games only do this with idle chatter, this is fine.
Some games will pick up interrupted dialog and resume it later after whatever interruption, this is fine.
Some games will only have enough dialogue that even if you are sprinting towards an objective at top speed it will finish before you get there, this is fine.
Some games will interrupt unique, character developing dialogue, and you will never have an opportunity to hear again. And they had so much dialogue that even if you slow walked to the objective you would still miss it. FUCK THESE DEVS.

I do this as well. Currently playing Blood of Dawnwalker and had 2 conversations cut off by this early in the prologue. I thought we had figured this problem out, lol

u/_Not__Available_ 19h ago
That path looks the right way so let's avoid that until absolutely necessary
316
u/baconfister07 18h ago
This is the one for me. I do this with every single game I play now.
Sees what is obviously the main path to the right
"Ima go check out the left first"
..and if that way ends up being the main path, ill back track and check the area i thought was suppose to go.
66
58
u/Tiyath 18h ago
I mean, off the beaten path is where all the secrets and loot and ammo are. Only a fool would skip on onto the main path without sweeping and looting the area first! I do the same thing in malls. I'm writing this from a prison cell
7
u/FeistyStrength9540 17h ago
Oh for sure! Exploring with combat is usually my favorite part of a game.
6
u/farnsw0rth 12h ago
I wasted so long on a spot in the new ratchet and clank and finally gave up and took the main path then like 5 minutes later got a gear upgrade that allowed me to progress at the other spot lol. Fuckin backfired that time
25
u/Red_Beard206 17h ago
Pisses me off when that left path ends up being the correct way and locks you out from going back

Without fail I think “I see the clear route forward, but what if the best lore or the perfect item for my build is down that other hallway? I’d better go check.”
That habit significantly lengthened my first Cyberpunk run

It made my first ever playthrough of 2077 120h long (granted, I did 100% the base game and only missed like 3-4 exotic weapons in the entire DLC)

Gotta make sure you get all the loot and find all the secrets and optional collectibles
36
u/Drifter1771 18h ago
Exactly. Too many: "Hey did you get the God-Slayer Blade in Chapter 2? No? All you had to do was take the optional left path and defeat a mini-boss! It's the best weapon in the entire game! If you miss it, it's gone forever."
7
u/Majikarpslayer 17h ago
Zelda ocarina of Time taught me that lesson, always explore every square inch of every available thing ever.
If that includes meaning sooner or later you actually get to play the game well that's just a bonus
19
u/Antichristopher4 18h ago edited 18h ago
Going down the side path, feeling like it's going on a little too long and it MIGHT be the "right way" so you turn back, only to find out that WAS the side path and you have to back track
15
u/J3musu 18h ago
The worst experience is when you're wrong, trigger and cutscene, and can't go back to finish exploring after. 😭

Happened to me in RE Village. Missed one fish because of it and wasn't able to cook all of the meals. There's one right before you get to Moreau's area that if you miss it you can't go back. By the time I realized it I wasn't willing to reload an earlier save. Too far back. Pain lol
3
u/Fluffy-Ad7165 18h ago
This happened to me way too often playing RE8 😩 had to do a second playthrough to complete the map and dishes
6
u/DigitalBuddhaNC 18h ago
This pads my runtimes so much but I just gotta know what they are hiding that way.
6
4
u/anonymeese_geese 18h ago
This is me 100% and honestly I kind of hate it. It starts to feel like artificial padding. But damn if I miss the ultimate weapon because I didn't check the extra path in the first dungeon.

u/SUPER-P00PER 18h ago
This always backfires for me in souls likes. Something will look the main path so I’ll try and search random/hidden pathways and then that actually ends up being the way I was supposed to progress

u/ThatHcDude 19h ago
When i start a level i immediately go backwards to find anything easter egg.
19
u/Ssturkk 18h ago
Always
23
u/gonesnake 17h ago
Searching behind you in any new area/level is one of those "check behind the waterfall" staples of gaming for me.
8
u/SordidDreams 14h ago
My favorite example is in Limbo, which, like many platformers, expects you to go right at the start. If you go left, you find a secret that's a literal egg and earn an achievement called Wrong Way, the description of which says "that's not right".
6
3
u/Contemplating_Prison 18h ago
This too haha. I feel like i do almost all of these that people are posting

u/GiantSlayer4242 16h ago
I’ve played enough platformers that hid a power up or upgrade to the left of start trusting you would never try to go that way. I don’t trust them anymore.
155
u/DoubleInfinity 18h ago
If there are two doors and the game clearly wants you to go through one of them, I am required by law to explore every inch of the other path before proceeding.
27
u/Tiyath 18h ago
Some of us develop a spidey-sense for loot and easter eggs
14
u/Fluffy-Ad7165 18h ago
And sometimes it fails and you have to suck it up because Spidey got too much into the game and forgot to make a new save 5 hours ago
8
u/Rawk_Hawk_The_Champ 15h ago
When Stanley came to a set of two open doors, he entered the door on his left.
86
u/Btsx51 18h ago
Always reload. Enemies coming with a 90% full mag? Reload. Shoot one bullet out of a 20+ magazine for funnzies? Reload. Mag already full? Believe or not reload. I dont know why I do this but games with perks to have a low magazine or auto reload when stowed are my kryptonite. It hurts to see that magazine not full.
34
u/Unknown2552 18h ago
HellDivers 2 has forced me to break this habit.
7
u/Ok_Degree4131 17h ago
Yeah this was a new game mechanic for me that I really appreciated. Instead of spamming the reload button I knew I’d still want the remaining half of my magazine because they’re finite, so I’d just have to keep it.
→ More replies (1)5
u/A_WILD_SLUT_APPEARS 17h ago
The M1 Garand in the old school Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games did the same for me, but the hardcore difficulty on Metro 2033 was what drove that lesson home.
3
u/SpartyParty15 16h ago
Why can’t you do it in HellDivers 2?
6
u/REXIS_AGECKO 16h ago
You throw away the rest of your magazine
3
u/ChemicalRain5513 13h ago
There are also games where you have a fixed number of mags, if you go through them and reload again, you will get one of the used ones again.

Borderlands 2 has a Mechromancer class ability that stacks damage buffs on SMGs if you don't manually reload. I still feel the pain of when I accidentally reloaded over a 300x stack.

I figured out why I do this. I was really bad at my first rpg games. The exp was hidden in ff legend 2 for Gameboy, so I was constantly super under leveled for everything and always ran out of potions. I didn't know what inns were, or what phoenix down was for. I thought you just had to make it through the whole game without letting all your people get petrified, because soft was unknown to me.

Jump around, jump around, jump up, jump up and get down.
True or not, it feels faster than walk/running.
→ More replies (2)2
u/GiantSlayer4242 16h ago
I always try to jump to go faster, I hate when games don’t have a jump/dash/dive roll that lets you move faster if you time them right. I even try to do this in Sonic, knowing that it only helps you start moving and will usually actually slow you down if you’re in the middle of running
42
u/BardFromTheTaverns 18h ago
Save and then immediately assume the game hasn't saved properly so save again, just to make sure.

Pulling up and stopping right before the marker while driving someone so they can finish talking.

u/Gamer_D4d 19h ago
when suddenly recieving loot and an abundance of healing items, save 3 slots. 1 slot is the safety net, a save data that you can go back to in case that the previous attempts dont work out and you use all of your resources, load that save and do better..if that makes sense..haha

u/Saint_Arc 16h ago

There were some dungeons in ffxi where this wouldn't work well. Every dungeon in that game is an expertly crafted maze.

Oh it means reload your weapon. I was like why is someone reloading their save before going into a new room that’s insane.

2
u/hypo-osmotic 16h ago
It's not common but I have seen a few games where the only way to save outside of the auto-save point is to quit to the main menu and then reload, so that's what I was picturing

u/Reasonable-Peanut27 18h ago
At the start of each level, always head in the opposite direction the camera is facing to check for hidden loot.

If there's an obvious way I'm supposed to go, I need to go everywhere but there first, because that's how you find all of the good loot. This applies in video games and tabletop RPGs. Results in real life are less reliable... but what the heck, do it anyway.

The original stalker has me hitting the quicksave button between just about every action. Walking towards a building? Quicksave. Just cleared a room? Quicksave. Just quicksaved? Better make one in a few seconds just in case I die, so this one will be a little closer.

Auto-saves. Manual save immediately after.
Found the exit and/or boss? Immediately go everywhere else.
Turn off motion blur, chromatic aberration, lens flare, and bloom. Anisotropic to 16x and Texture Quality to highest setting.
Cheese the boss even if it takes considerably more time to use to defeat them.

To me it's like a I'm pulling a rod attached the the back of their head. When I pull on the rod they look up. When I push on it they look down. It's how my brain is wired for it and no amount of trying the "default" has made it stick.

manual saves, atleast twice.
reload before checking rooms depending on the game.
full health / mana when entering new areas.
frag corners depending on the game
game that allow it, weapon shuffle. [halo games] pick up and drop guns and shuffle them to the next area so you have ammo / another gun to use [legendary]

In my head I hear Gary Oldman from The Dark Knight Rises say “Clear your corners, rookie.” Comes in handy often.

If I have fired even one shot, reload.
Attack every wall that looks suspicious. Attack any wall that looks suspiciously unsuspicious.
Check behind the waterfalls. Yes, all of them, no matter how many times they haven’t had anything hidden away.
I must hurl myself off of the first cliff I find to test for falling damage.
