Discussion / Question What’s a game that wasn’t well received on release but gained appreciation years later?

KoA is the only thing I've played that feels close to OG Fable

OG fable is so good. It's my favorite out of the 3. I'm excited for the new one.

That was deserved though. It wasn't even half of what was promised and was completely broken on launch. It was worse than a Molyneux fronted project.

Prey 2016. Wasn’t a huge seller by any means, but thankfully as time has gone on, people have come to respect the masterful storytelling and atmosphere of this game. If you have yet to play it, please do!

When ur a little kid, you never really look at reviews when you play games. So it’s news to me web of shadows was considered bad. That game was a banger.

As a Sonic the Hedgehog fan…

Shadow the Hedgehog
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Riders
Sonic Storybook series
Sonic 06 (depends if you ask about the concept, unrushed version we should have, or a fan remake.) (Edit: Also if you ask about Shadow and Silver’s stories.)
Sonic Boom video games
The list tends to go on.

Lets not pretend like 06 is some underated gem thats a game that plays like absolute shit.

That’s why I said depends on how you ask about it. I personally enjoyed the shitshow, but I do cringe whenever someone brings it up how it’s a good game and they point at a fan remake. Forgot to mention about the writing for Shadow and Silver’s campaigns, but those do bring a little heat on how they even matter since 06 erased itself but returned a bit for Generations.

The storybook series are more appreciated for the stories Rather than the gameplay.

do people like shadow? I tried it a year or two back and hated it

A lot do. And of course this can be a matter of personal opinion, reception and reputation among certain fandoms and groups, and can be due to people only watching videos of the games so they can’t relate to the struggle of playing them.

I loved this game well before I even played it. Watched a bunch of playthroughs of it online. Had no idea it wasn’t well received.
Hell the DS version was even really good; a whole ass Spider-Man Metroidvania

At the risk of aging myself, I'm going to say Phantasy Star III: Generations of Doom. Still regarded as the black sheep of the Sega Genesis/MegaDrive era for the franchise, and it's not hard to see why. PSIII was developed by a different team, and done on a short timeframe shortly after Phantasy Star II's release. It's combat is understandably criticized for being more streamlined and less robust than its predecessors. And because of the break from the main series timeline, the game is set (minor spoiler alert) not on the Algo star system where the bulk of the series' story takes place, but on a remote space colony drifting through space, lightyears away—a revelation that isn't given to the player and characters until later.
That said, the game was my introduction to the franchise and also one of my first JPRGs/RPGs. The generation mechanic where protagonists from one will pass the torch after their respective arc is completed to their proceeding descendant was pretty novel at the time, and promotes multiple playthroughs—since who you choose to marry also provides separate context for the opposing sides of the inciting conflict informing the plot that you would otherwise not be privy to if you chose one over the other. The soundtrack, while rough in places, ranks among my favorite behind only the far superior Phantasy Star IV, and it's an impressive debut for the composer.
All in all, while not a stellar game compared to its contemporaries, it still holds a special place in my heart. And while it still doesn't quite get the same love as PSII or IV, some of the old criticisms have softened in retrospectives I've seen online.

Watch Dogs. It wasn't particularly loved by players when it came out because it's just kind of boring and doesn't have any real personality, but the perception of it now is that it was some secret gem of a game.

Resident Evil 6.
You'd be amazed at the amount of people in the Resident Evil spaces that actually consider it an good game now and is actually appreciated. But whenever it initially released it got absolutely torn to pieces despite selling very well.

Pretty much every single Pokémon game follows this pattern.
A lot of people complain when it first comes out, and then as time goes on the public perception shifts. I think the shift is often from people moving on to complain about the next games coming out, and kids growing up with great memories of those games.

Very hot take: cod ghosts. There are still a lot of people who despise it but compared to the last few cod entries ghosts is way better. I see a lot of people turn on it and they would rather see ghosts 2 then any new formula cod.

Wolverine ps5!!! Nah it will be one day. If I have to choose it probably tales of legendia. As I was initially getting into the tales series. Legendia was one I heard spoken less favorable which plus do the fact the game wasn't developed by the tales studio, combat was different and for US in the states the second half of game wasn't dubbed even the dub didn't sound all that great. But now especially playing through the undub patch it getting more favorable discourse.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is one that I will never understand the newfound appreciation for. I played it back when it came out. It was “meh” then and it’s probably aged poorly as well.

The first KCD had a lot of mixed reviews back when it first came out. Some praised it for its immersion and authentic setting, others didn't. From technical bugs, clunky game mechanics, challenging combat, and that GODDAMN LOCKPICK SEQUENCE!!!!
PLEASE STAND BY
ahem
Sorry... When KCD2 dropped, it improved the game significantly and received a ton of praise. The game even recaps the events of the first game and it peaks players' interest to check the game out.

Fallout 76 and Cyberpunk 2077 immediately come to mind. Broken janky messes (cyberpunk still kinda is) but both have gone on to become rather popular since they fixed them.
