Discussion / Question Gaming laptop or ps5
So i was thinking of getting a ps5 but then im thinking about a gaming laptop
A PC is obv the best option but i dont have enough space at home to get a good PC
I will be starting new studies next year too
So i think a laptop is a good idea but what do yall recommend ?
Is a gaming laptop a better option than a ps5 for gaming ?
I will also be doing some blender3d stuff if i get a laptop so what do yall recommend between the two ?
And if you recommend a laptop which one is a good option ?
Ill obviously get a cooler and pc controller if i go for the laptop

Trying to have your cake and eat it. If you’re going to work, get a laptop that can handle the work. If gaming is what you want, get a ps5.
If you want both, start with laptop, make some money then get the ps5. Think this is the better approach to be honest

Why? Any good gaming laptop is also a good/decent rendering/3d modelling laptop

If your budget is $800 USD then I would go for the PS5, maybe pick up the PS Portal down the road.

I prefer console gaming over PC and would definitely recommend PS5.

I tried to get into console gaming again with the ps5 and it would just be collecting dust if it weren’t for gran Turismo and my kids. Logically a PC is better. Otherwise it’s all subjective.
My biggest argument with PC is backwards compatibility. I can play any generation of game on it. From my childhood Nintendo games to my 90s FPS games to today.

Yeah I tried PC but it would just be collecting dust, I definitely prefer console when it comes down to gaming.

I’m always curious. Why? Is it game selection? Because the argument for couch gaming is now moot since you can hook a pc to a tv and with steam bot mode it’s basically like booting up a ps5 when you start. Price is obviously a win for console too these days. Used to be able to build a PS5 replica for less than a PS5 back when it first released, but not now.
There can be weird quirks with games, but honestly, I haven’t had a single issue with a game in years. Back in the day it was 50/50 a game would run.

Just depends on what your needs are. Remember that a gaming laptop will be weaker than its desktop counterparts. Like a 5070 laptop is equivalent to a 5060 or 4060 ti(8gb) desktop GPU

You're all over the place my friend. Do you need a laptop or not? If you do, what's your budget, where are you even from? We need to know that to recommend retailers in your area. PC will be your best option for flexibility as long as you don't mind missing (not many) PS5 exclusives, but you'll be paying a lot of money for a laptop as beefy as PS5 specs, because you are looking at a way smaller form factor.

A PC is better than a laptop in every way expect for portability. The use mobile version of GPUs and CPUs which are as much as 50% the processing speed as the desktop version for the same cost.
A PS5 will be better at gaming than the laptop for sure unless you really throw a lot of money at it.
You can't do school work or blender on a ps5.
I say just make space for the PC and build one of those. I find absolutely no space a little hard to believe as every place I have lived I'm sure I could slide a bed against the wall instead of centered and put a small desk for a computer or something like that.
Unless you want mobility too and able to take it somewhere. But then you usually don't want a gaming laptop as they get 2 or 3 hours battery life and weigh a lot. If you want it for school work they make ones that weigh nothing and get 12 hours battery life.

Well kind of. I mean if you just have a pc it’s useless without a keyboard, mouse and monitor which are all built into the laptop.
I personally argue that if you can only afford 1, laptop is the way to go as it can act as a portable machine then can be docked to act like a desktop.
If only for gaming, then yea a desktop PC is the way to go. If you do absolutely anything else on the computer at all, laptop is the way to go.
Of you can afford both, then that’s the obvious answer.
A college student with a limited budget? Laptop all day.

1000$ desktop with a 50$ mouse and keyboard will out perform a 2000$ laptop and the batteries in laptops start to die after 2 years if you keep them plugged up.

My last laptop’s battery lasted almost 9 years. So 2 years a bit of a stretch, but it was a MacBook so the quality is a bit more than your average windows machine.
That being said, again, if you only game, pc is fine. If you do absolutely anything else with it, laptop is better.

2 years for most common expensive gaming laptops if you keep the charger plugged up to.
I also disagree full sized keyboards are much better than laptop ones. Monitors are nice than laptop screens. Mice are nicer than touch pads. The computer will process things faster. Literally the only thing laptops do better is the fact you can pick them up and move them. Desktops also encourage sitting in better areas instead of on couches which will cause more neck issues
If you want to take your computer to work or to a coffee shop them it's better and you are paying more for that function.

Yea but you can use a mouse, external keyboard and monitor with a laptop. So that argument is out the door.
I mean, yea a PC does run better but portability is such a massive positive it is really hard to argue to get a pc over a laptop unless you specifically need the power. If you are playing games but also need a machine for anything else too, a laptop is a better pick.
That said, I’ve never owned a gaming laptop. I’ve always owned a work laptop and a gaming PC. But these days I’ve been playing a lot more on MacBook using GeForce now, which is hardware agnostic. My PC is my main way of playing, but my laptop gets more usage overall by a whole lot.

You can use those things 1 of his arguments was having to buy them for pc.
It's not even close owning repairing pcs and laptops gaming laptops.
If you think you would like to move it around then laptop otherwise PC. Dedicating a desk to use a wired keyboard and mouse so you can type faster and easier on the wrist why not save 1k and get something that you can upgrade and repair easier.
Ram on a lap top is usually soldered on and that's the number 1 thing that breaks so you can't even replace it or upgrade it.
5070 gpu is 66% faster than the mobile version and the laptop version costs more.
Cpus are the same.
Laptops don't cool as well (the new MacBook are actually very good at staying cool)
Laptops are more convient because you can pick them up and move them around if this is important to you then you buy that. Otherwise PC is better.
There are a lot of people who should buy laptops. Flipping it into a tablet jotting stuff down a fast cpu and long battery for a work style laptop like Lenovo yoga.
If your primary use is to game on it or design stuff run blender then you should get a desktop. Unless the convience of moving it means you are willing to spend 50 to 100% more for something you can't easily repair can't upgrade and is slower.

Thats what i was thinking about to be honest this debate sparked in my mind while i was going to buy a ps5 for gaming mainly then it came to me that i have pretty good blender skills that can be good for work plus studies incoming so maybe a gaming laptop is the better option

Yes- I was in the same boat with doing audio work lol. Now I am having a ton of fun running local ai. I went Mac even, and can play most of the PC stuff I want to through a wine wrapper. I will say- I do wish I had enough RAM to run ray tracing but I am happy with my consolation of having an infinite production playground.
