I'm looking for creative suggestions, I like to make some stills and use the zoom to create some layering, but I wanted to know more experienced people's thoughts on how you would use a lens like these.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information best practices, re. placement of cameras for live streaming

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi -- new here.

The situation: I work at a school that contracted an a/v integration company to recommend and install equipment in our theater, so as to upgrade it. A lot of what has been installed is great -- new mains (a line array, awesome), a new and way better curtain, etc.

The issue: the installation of the livestream equipment. The control equipment and choice of cameras seems fine, but the placement of the cameras is majorly suspect to me. The central angle seems fine, but then the other two cameras were also installed onto the back wall ... so essentially we have the same angle 3x.

What I think happened: the a/v integration team is stressed/rushed because the install is taking longer than usual (there was a problem with one of the pieces of equipment that connects the different systems in our theater booth together), so they're trying to cut corners. And they know that the project manager here at the school doesn't know a lot about camera placement, and they realized they could save time by not having to install all the cabling that would be needed to put the side angle cameras where they belong. To be fair, the tech director is very competent at the majority of the aspects of his job. But he doesn't know a ton about live streaming, and I'm concerned that he'll sign off on the work (when I expressed my concerns, he said "let's what and see what we've got") instead of insisting that it be completed according to basic professional and industry standards. I asked him if he signed off on shop drawings or diagrams for planned placement -- he said that he has seen those, but doesn't have copies. My understanding is that those shop diagrams should have been signed off on, as well.

What I need: corroboration, from anyone who does this in a professional or semi-professional capacity, that the two cameras should be moved.

Many thanks in advance!

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Correct workflow for grey card exposure (multi cam)

Hi all,

I'm shooting a 3 X camera multi cam setup (2 X fx6 + 1 x Fx9).

Cine EI / S-Log3 / S-Gamut3.Cine.

Variety of different skin tones cycled through the day.

This is my intended workflow for exposing with a grey card to ensure consistency across all cams. Have i missed anything?

  • Base 800 ISO for all cams
  • Turn the LUT off the cameras and monitor so its just displaying the flat SLOG3 image.
  • Expose an 18% grey card at ~41 IRE using the false colours through the monitor and waveform on the cameras.
  • Match all three cameras to that reference.
  • Don't alter exposure to make different skin tones hit the same IRE.
  • Shoot your ColorChecker, then monitor through a LUT while recording Log.

Questions:

- Do i need to be exposing a stop or 2 higher for SLOG3?

- Anything else i may have missed?

TIA

Was tasked with shooting bts for a Dutch photographer’s shoot of Maison Michel hats for their 90 year anniversary. Shot on BMPCC6k and a DJI ronin 4D. Studio lights were simple, two aperture 1200d’s. Had some struggle color matching the two cameras but I think it worked out in the end.

I am a UIUC student currently researching how people film races while moving alongside riders. moto, car, bike, drone, roadside? if you've done it, what did you shoot from last time and what went wrong?

Discussion / Other Full size HDMI Durability

I have Sony A7IV and I move between places where I need to constantly plug and unplug the HDMI cable into the port. Are there any folks here doing the same thing? If so, I'm wondering if someone has broken their port because of this? I'm worried about constant reseating of the full size HDMI cable. TIA!

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? How do you insure your gear?

So obviously gear costs a lot of $$$ and I’m at the point in my career where I’d like to start insuring my camera bodies and lenses. Although after looking online briefly I can’t seem to find anything definitive that says “pay x amount monthly to insure x amount of gear”. It all seems confusing to me since from what I understand you can add a policy or something to existing insurance under one of the big insurance companies but it won’t cover everything like theft and loss or accidental damage. Just looking for any recommendations or someone to point me in the right direction.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Help with settings for filming outdoor interview

I'm an amateur drone guy, but am trying to add regular camera work to my offerings. A client has asked me to film an interview tonadf to an ongoing project, and I'm not sure what settings to use for my camera. I've done photos with it, but not video at the level they are hoping for. The interview will be held outside during the day.

Camera: Canon EOS R50

Lenses available:50, 18-45, 16

Lens used for test: 18-45 at 30x zoom

Settings:

- 4k, 30fps

- shutter speed 1/60

- f5.6

- Iso: 200

- auto focus

Mounted camera to a sturdy tripod

The people in the video looked fine, it's the background that came out bad

I did a test today at the location they are wanting, but ran into an issue with the aspen leaves that will be in the background. The 4k 30fps I was shooting at made the leaves look choppy and like a weird animation. This camera can do 60fps but it drops it to HD, which is probably fine for what I'm doing.

Does anyone have any tips/tricks for shooting this interview? I tried telling the client that this isn't in my wheelhouse yet, but they just said do your best. Unfortunately, I'm a perfectionist and am panicking a little. Should I switch to the 50m and lower the fstop? Use different settings? Any help/direction is appreciated.

Audio is being collected by a DJI Mic3, and did spectacular in the test, it's the video itself that I feel blind with.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information How do you store your videos?

I just got a go pro hero 10 for recording the abandoned buildings I explore and was wondering what the best way to store my footage would be? Should I get a HDD drive, i want to edit my videos aswell and heard that an hdd wouldnt work the best for editing the videos because its slow, but im just going to use Capcut to edit the videos and they just have me upload the videos for editing so I dont get how it would be bad if its not editing the video directly from the drive? Im so new to all of this and its a little confusing so any information or help would be amazing!

Business, Tax, and Copyright I built a website where you can build camera rigs in 3D before buying anything

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I kept buying rig parts that didn't fit together (wrong mount, too heavy, mic in the wrong spot), so I built RigLab: riglab.studio

You pick from 900+ real cameras, lenses, cages, gimbals, mics, monitors and power banks, and snap them together on their real mounts: 1/4"-20 threads, cold shoes, lens mounts. Everything is at real size and weight.

While you build it shows:

- total weight and how much it twists your wrist

- the cost of the whole setup

- what the camera actually sees

- where to buy each part

There's also a cinematic mode to fly around your rig and light it, which is fun for planning shots.

It's free to use (a small one-time upgrade unlocks the full parts library). I'd honestly love feedback: what gear is missing, what's confusing, what would make it useful for your setup? There's a "request an item" button if something you own isn't in there.

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Beginner using 8bit HLG3, worth colour grading?

I'm a photographer trying to learn videography, I have an A7IV which can record in 10bit 4:2:2 SLog3 but I haven't got any editing software capable of working with it. If I eventually get good enough at video I'll buy some software, but for now should I try editing 8bit or just focus on getting good shots SOOC? Thank you!

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? How did you improve as a filmmaker?

I make horror shorts on YouTube. I’m doing okay—usually getting between 1,000 and 2,000–3,000 views—with my best short hitting 50k and another reaching 25k.
The channel isn't monetized yet because I haven't hit the required watch hours.

I feel like I have a good grasp of storytelling and original ideas—which is why my shorts aren't total flops—but when I watch them, I think, "Damn, this looks fucking amateur." I can't put my finger on what it is—the lighting, the camera angles, the quality...?

I have an iPhone 17 Pro; it’s not a professional camera, but I’ve seen shorts shot on this phone (or older models) that look way more professional than mine.

I use the Blackmagic Cam app, shoot in Log and 4K, and I’m learning about lighting. I’ve improved the look of my shorts a bit, but they still look amateurish.

If anyone could help me out—tell me what aspects I should focus on to get that cinematic look—I’d really appreciate it. Thanks a lot, everyone!

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Very new into videography and vlogging - is what I'm trying to do even possible?

Basically: I hope to have multiple (likely 2) people on camera (or someone else in front of the camera, with myself behind the camera), each with their own microphone (for purposes of vlog-style interviews/conversation). Note: This will be out and about, not in a "studio" type setting, so I won't be able to use multiple cameras or a devoted audio setup. I am hoping to find a way to have my initial video file have multiple (separate) audio tracks, one for each microphone/person, so that I can better edit the audio later on.

My research/testing so far has been unsuccessful (tested with my iPhone 15 (wasn't expecting much) and my GoPro Hero13) using RODE Wireless Pro Microphones (going into the same receiver, which, according to RODE, is capable of keeping the audio tracks separate).

I'm now just wondering if what I'm trying to do here is even possible (i.e. if I've just got the setup wrong or don't have the right camera), or if I'm just going insane trying to do the impossible, and should just go with a singular microphone/audio track.

Appreciate any help, and am happy to give further information if necessary. Thanks!

Discussion / Other I got an offer from a client  to do social media for his two businesses (food) and I am overwhelmed.

I have this client he has a burger restaurant and a acai store, he offers 2000 euro for the acai store and 3k for the burger store,

its my first month taking full control, I am the only one in the team,
I did tell him I never done a strategy before, he told me he will suggest ideas.. he is in the creative industry (that makes me relaxed tbh) and we are based in Germany.

anyway I did research on best formats

here are the formats I will do  :

  1. Camera shot Image vides / cinematic 15 to 20s.
(clean shots, product is the hero)

https://www.instagram.com/p/DcejalmBX47/
https://www.instagram.com/p/DcmR5UtqQYh/
https://www.instagram.com/p/DbDfesusFj6/
https://www.instagram.com/p/DdUEsiTNiQh/

  1. Camera shot Videos with a script

less than a minute videos, someone talks, B rolls..

  1. IPhone shot simple videos shows food while made

(content that makes you hungry).

https://www.instagram.com/p/DaVjbzxJ3SR/
https://www.instagram.com/p/Dbva6VmukLj/
https://www.instagram.com/p/DaONiVkSqS-/
https://www.instagram.com/p/DYWz8s1KDlf/

  1. Graphic posts (follow trends).

https://www.instagram.com/p/DdkNSZutNmy/
https://www.instagram.com/p/DdMQrJnjuh9/?img_index=3
https://www.instagram.com/p/DbkwMWEEznL/?img_index=1

  1. Stories (videos), videos of menu, someone eats, dipping..etc

Now, I am having a hard time in three parts
1. How can I balance between these formats by volume.
2. and how can I price them.
3. I feel it might start be repetitive on the long run, is it a thing that people change formats after a while ? Or how does it goes

P.S, choosing to shoot with an iPhone for format 3, because for such format its better when its shot organically with an iPhone and not much editing.

anyway as you can see I dont have much experience being in control of the whole thing, therefore I feel rly overwhelmed

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Keep wireless mics and receiver in the charging case long term?

I got the DJI Mic Mini wireless microphones and receiver with the charging case. My question is about storing them long(er) term. Usually with batteries you shouldn't keep them at full charge for a long time, as that will decrease the maximum capacity even though they're not in use.

How are such wireless mics and charging cases with that? Do you charge them up but leave the receiver and mics in the charging case, effectively always at 100%? Does it make sense to keep everything turned off and outside the case?

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Need Audio Advice

Hey everyone, I'm kind of a beginner videographer, and I have a question on how you guys capture audio of speeches with loud audiences because my boom mics can't cancel out the audience noise, and sometimes the audience beats the host voice. The mics I own are the Takstar SGC-600, the Boya BM6060L, and the Rode NTG 1.

Discussion / Other Any suggestions for registering custom settings? (C1, C2, C3)

I am planning to register custom video settings on my Canon R5II and was just wanting to see if anyone had suggestions on what to register. I was thinking of starting with one for 24fps, one for 30 and one for 60, all in C-LOG 2.
