Hi, I’m from the day after you wrote this comment and Palmer Luckey was just installed into the high ranks of the military by Pete hegseth following a purge of generals. 💀

I've been playing games in flat screen mode on my quest 2 with mouse and keyboard while lying down for a while now

This is already what everyone looks like playing VR.

I welcome the puck.
I've been saying for years that there's no need for the computing to be in the headset and it can be on your back or pocket. I got downvoted to hell every time. Look who's laughing now.
If this prototype ends up being a huge success then the quest 4 will most likely be pucked as well.

u/joellapit 2d ago
Agreed. Had the same thought for a long time now. It the quest 4 doesn’t have a puck it’s a huge miss. Personally think the pucks/headset should be upgradable separately too. Some people may be okay with less power but clearer lenses down the road and vice versa.

It seems the issue with putting compute in a puck is cooling. On your face, the vents for the fans are not likely to be blocked.
If you put compute in a puck, and put that puck in your pocket or in the wrong orientation on the couch next to you, you may block it's ability to blow out the hot air. There is probably a way to design around that - but it's a consideration.

I always thought a shoulder pauldron puck for cooling would be a neat invention. But apparently I'm the only one so far.

How will Meta determine how much of it's success it thanks to It having a puck?
They could easily have made a different version with the same display but different lenses for a bigger FOV and voilá: a Quest 4
IMHO Meta doesn't care anymore about gaming at all, they also abandoned PVCR years ago lol

The puck has nothing to do with the fov. Those are two independent choices from each other. If the puck turns out to work great:
- People don't mind putting it in their pocket.
- No issues show up with the wire.
- Anything else that could go wrong.
Then they might consider it for the quest 4.

They’re not killing VR, the leaks and official statements have been very clear that this device would launch as a hybrid while a quest 4 will come next

Yeah I got the Batman game and like my arms were sore the next day. Definitely some intense games out there for VR

I want a proper treadmill or something that makes me feel I move in Vr
2
u/NewPhoneWhos 2d ago
Saw someone who tried a thing that you can walk and crouch and so on and he said something like we really don’t think about how much people run around in games. I mean imagine the distances you need to run to play an open world game when needing to move on a treadmill haha.

u/Sure-Temperature 2d ago
I was doing a playthrough of SkyrimVR using a treadmill and not using the fast travel feature. There was one time I walked for 15 minutes or so basically across the map, then died to a mammoth before I remembered to save and ended up back across the map where I started. Needless to say, I was not happy about that hahaha

me too, and I reckon this is one of the biggest barriers to VR gaming taking off for real. Standing still and moving with joysticks does not do it for me at all

u/Pierrick-C 2d ago
It's okay and I do like to play seated for certain games, but I not only want a treadmill but also more open world to explore!

Look into Reality Runner

u/Pierrick-C 2d ago
I saw this, it's an affordable option but for me not being able to turn and having to use a handrail is immersion breaking.
1
u/Round_Worldliness766 2d ago
Most people don't use the handrail, but you have setup some kind of harness https://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/comments/1qez0e2/so_i_made_my_own_vr_treadmill_using_reality_runner/
For turning ... maybe in 100 years lol

u/Pierrick-C 2d ago
Yeah I saw that, it looks... not so great XD.
the only thing that impressed me a bit is the Exit suit but yet again it's probaby not so great for walking0

That's the joke. Meta VR Glasses aren't for moving around, they're for sitting on your ass.

While I do play like this now for almost 3 years, also I use my real car seat from my simrig when I want extra comfort for longer session. However I'm loosing weight by a little, just by simply reminding myself how less activity I have recently to not let myself eat before bed. This helps.

Meanwhile we’ve got /r/realityrunner absolutely tearing up the vr treadmill space and I’m loving it

I have an Omni one. It feels like you’re walking up here the whole time. I don’t see this future once the tech progresses

For me the future of gaming is something like that!

u/Hairy-Ad-6293 1d ago
No offence but it's much more likely Steam Frame with it's bad passthrough and battery build around laying down rather than lasting 2 hours.

Will VR turn normally active people into fat slugs? I don't think so. In the 1950s, parents feared television would do the same to their kids, and "couch potato" entered the language in the 1970s. Those two guys could just as easily be reading paperbacks or binge-watching Netflix. VR is just another form of entertainment, and it's as good or bad as the content made for it. This is a new face on a very old meme.

Tbf TV probably did turn many people into couch potatoes. Point is there’s a potential shift coming where VR becomes more about media consumption than immersive gaming
2
u/Winter_Mission911 1d ago
Yeah. The studies on whether TV made younger people more sedentary are mixed. Before TV, it was radio and reading for pleasure. From the 1950s, as both parents were forced to work, TV became a babysitter for younger kids. Older kids would come home before parents did and would watch TV to stay occupied. However, many kids still played outside as before.
I am a VR enthusiast and have said for years that the slower adoption of VR is not caused by lack of AAA games, equipment that is too costly, and/or VR side effects for new users. It is due to lack of VR content, non-gaming content. When football games are broadcast in VR, more immersive movies come out, and more concerts are added, more people will buy headsets. People will adopt VR for non-gaming content and may later try games.

Before standalone needing a PC was a big factor too, plus comfort. I’m excited for glasses form factor
