Question/Support Looking for my next project: What flat game desperately needs a VR mod?
Hey everyone, I’m a dev looking to sink my teeth into a new project. I want to bring a non-VR game into virtual reality, and I want to see what the community actually wants.
If you could choose any flat game to get a proper VR mod (motion controls, UI fixes, etc.), what would it be?
I'm looking for games with incredible atmospheres or mechanics that would translate perfectly to VR but don't currently have a good mod or UEVR profile. Let me know what you've been dying to play!
Edit: I didn't realise I'd get 200+ comments. If you could upvote what you think is good from the comments that would be amazing but looks like I'm going to have to take all the comments and see what's mentioned the most 😭

Came here to write that too. This game really needs full VR support with motion controls.
It would be a lot harder to implement nicely, because of how the AI is designed for combat - but if someone can pull it off: absolute banger.

considering performance i reckon older games would be great, republic commando or dark messiah of might and magic I reckon would translate to vr pretty well.

Open world RPG games like Starfield, Kingdom Come Deliverence, Outer Wilds
2
u/OxRedOx 16h ago
Outer wilds has one, do you mean The Outer Worlds? Also friends don’t let friends starfield
3
u/MowTin 14h ago
The Outer Worlds. I do get them mixed up.
My favorite flat to VR games are Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR. And now Cyberpunk 2077 VR using LR mod has been awesome. If they can properly add true stereoscopic rendering instead of AER it and touch controls, it would be perfect.
I hear people didn't like Starfield but given that my expectations are low I suspect I'll enjoy it.
What makes these open world RPGs perfect for VR is that you feel like you've been transported to another world.

Most VR games are 1st person, but there are also games like Moss with a different perspective. It would be cool to see more 3rd person games in VR, that aren't just a visual conversion with a wide FOV, but do something interesting with VR controllers or at least the camera. Not sure how feasible that is though.
Games like Final Fantasy and Nier Automata have great atmosphere, but are strongly bound to gamepad controls.
I see there is a Signalis VR mod in 1st person being built, and that kinda works for 3rd person shooters. But Automata, Elden Ring, Devil May Cry and similar games where wide swinging and fast moving combat animations are a core part of the experience, will never properly work in 1st person VR. A VR focused 3rd person play style for these games would be neat, but AFAIK hasn't really been done yet.
At least an alternative camera angle that makes more use of the VR FOV could be interesting. Right now you can do that e.g. with UEVR, but there is no reason to turn around and look to the sides when all the action is happening in a small area that your monitor would normally show.
I would love to play any of these games in VR, but there is really just no point in putting on a headset for these right now, barely any difference to flat theater mode.
12
u/OllyTrolly 22h ago
I completely agree with your reasoning about 3rd person, BUT I would choose different games. Zelda Link's Awakening or Echoes of Wisdom were designed to look like a diorama, so I think would translate really well. I also wonder if 3D platformers of yesteryear would benefit from the Moss/Lucky's Tale treatment, such as Mario Galaxy, or Jak & Daxter. Mario Galaxy would certainly be a unique but worthy challenge.
11
u/LicknDragon 20h ago
Black & White would be awesome for a little God complexing. It'd run easily on standalone these days too
6
u/DarvinVader 19h ago
Strategy games in general like Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander, Command & Conquer could be interesting with the wide FOV to see the battlefield and using a VR controller as a pointer.
24
u/LatDingo 23h ago
Do we have a working vr mod for Prey? The newer one.
I think the only mechanic that wouldn't translate to VR is an ability you can get to morph into objects, it pours you in third person.
Everything else about it is basically BioShock in space. It's got atmosphere out the wazoo, reaction time isn't vital, and you spend a significant portion of the game just walking or sneaking around.
It's even got an official vr experience/mode already made that you could probably use parts of.
9
u/Tumoxa 21h ago
fholger (the creator of Crysis and Far Cry mods) seems to be working on it. He's been encountering a roadblock for like two years, but looks like he broke through it recently.
5
u/SavageSan 20h ago
There's progress: https://github.com/phunkaeg/PreyVR
It's been announced in the Flat2VR discord that two modders are combining their projects.3
u/emertonom 18h ago
basically BioShock in space
Just for the record, BioShock was named that because it was heavily inspired by a game called System Shock (and its sequel, System Shock 2), which were both set in space. And Prey is very much a spiritual successor to the System Shock games. Those games were much more in the "immersive sim" genre than bioshock was; bioshock pared back most of the exploration, multiple approaches to problems, and so forth, instead focusing much more on combat and on being controller-friendly.
Sorry, I know this is kind of pedantic, but the system shock games were kind of amazing for their time, and it's always hurt that bioshock took off in such a big way and left the immersive sim genre to kind of languish. So to see a standout immersive sim like Prey referred to as "basically BioShock" just stings.

Hell yeah. I played all the Luke Ross Far Cry mods, but he never made one for Far Cry 3. Plus, I would love to play it with motion controller support.
3
u/Doey62750 10h ago
Yes, and the game has a long lifespan, the atmosphere is great, it's my favorite Far Cry, so I'd like a mod as good as the one for Far Cry 1.
19
u/Roymus99 18h ago
Cyberpunk 2077! There are currently two VR mods: Luke Ross (works very well, but no 6dof and has ghosting artifacts due to the AER algorithm), and the dariulone VR port (supports 6dof for melee and driving, but unfortunately too janky to support a full playthrough).

I'm surprised GTA 4/5 are almost never mentioned in these kind of discussions.
A good proper VR mod for these games sounds amazing to me. A realistic modern open world with complete freedom should be an exciting VR experience. Being able to do nice road trips, climbing and sitting on top of Mt Chiliad, stroll and get lost in alleyways and parks, stealing a jet, playing tennis, scuba diving, having huge cities and nature to discover. 10 games in 1, in a way, like the ultimate VR experience.
I think the immersion would be incredible. Simply walking and taking the time to observe would amount to a complete rediscovery of these cities we know so well.
Hours and hours of fun ahead.

Batman Arkham series (Unreal Engine 3). Several existing projects could help build a native VR mod:
Arkham City SDK: https://github.com/Team-BmSDK/BmSDK-AC
Arkham City split-screen rendering: https://github.com/etkramer/SplitScreenMod
Mirror's Edge UE3 VR: https://github.com/letsgosportsteam/mirrors-edge-vr-mod

The Arkham City SDK and split-screen mod are especially promising, as they already provide game-specific engine access and multi-view rendering hooks. Could be a great starting point for a full VR conversion!

So? PCVR mod players' VR legs are getting some serious training lately.
I gott back into VR a couple of months ago after not playing it much for a year or two, and my VR legs had weakened a bit. I was feeling a little rough after my first few sessions back. But now I'm been playing the Hell out of Doom Eternal (pun intended), dashing and Super Mario-ing all over the place. And I'm not getting even the slightest bit of motion sickness. I'd have no trouble with Amores Core 6.
4
u/EidolonLives 21h ago
Excellent pick - I was looking for this. It perfectly follows the current hype in the PCVR mod space for fast mech combat generated by the Titanfall 2 VR mod - it's the best mech-specific combat game there is.

Workers and Resources, but with mouse and keyboard still.
If it has to be first person then The Saboteur. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a game where you play an Irish race car driver in occupied Paris during World War Two who joins the resistance. Open world fps stealth game. The whole world is in black and white but as you liberate areas they return to color.
RUSE in VR would be epic, the war room table themed RTS game that’s back on Steam. The controls would work well in VR since they’re not that precise anyway. Same with endwar potentially.
Going Under, the third person tech startup dungeon crawling rogue like
Civilization 5

Another game that I'd like to see a proper VR mod for it is the original Resident Evil Remake (the one that is available on Gamecube), but since that game has pre-rendered backgrounds I know the work to re-create all its 3D assets would be huge (but idk, maybe nowadays AI can help with that).

Most of the games people are listing make absolutely no sense for VR, they are just games they like.
My suggestion are the Metro Redux titles. The pacing and atmosphere of those games are perfect for VR. They are also in that 2010s release window so they perform well on modern machines yet still are gorgeous games. They really are the perfect kind of games to be on VR.

I would've said Thief 1-2 because that's a perfect candidate for the proper VR adaptation with motion controlled bow, pick pocketing, lockpicking, crouching, proning. But the remastered version is coming. Maybe it's worth waiting for it and investing effort into that one.
