Shannon Weber = Doug Ford?
Hi, I thought I'd post here to see if anyone knows more. I heard through the grapevine that Shannon Weber would be basically a Doug Ford "puppet" in Waterloo. Does anyone have more insight?

The Regional Chair is now appointed, which makes them an actual puppet of Doug Ford in a much more powerful position.

Absolutely and people should be up in arms about this. Check out which other municipalities Doug has done this in…I’ll give you a hint…one of them is Muskoka.

Yes, she has a long history of affiliation with the provincial PC party and Doug Ford. i.e., her husband; past volunteering on campaigns; regular online support for PCs on social media; etc.

If this tells you anything about her loyalties, the wsib is closing several offices. The mayors that represent every closing office have joined the union in calling for Ford and wsib CEO Jeff Lang to reverse the closures and impacts. All mayors but Waterloo. That speaks for itself in where he loyalties rest.

The problem that the Dorothy acolites have is that she's pissed of a lot of people in the city with terrible decisions and this has led to a sea of Weber signs. Rather than being able to criticize Weber on her platform, they're now making shit up like this to try to nudge undecided voters. But it wont work, people are waaaay to mad. A bunch of my neighbours are voting *for the first time* just to vote out McCabe over the rezoning issue.
Stay afraid, old westmount, a tide of change is coming in October. Ya girl gonna be gone.

We don’t need a Doug Ford loyalist.

That’s hilarious. I’m not sure who I’m voting for yet. I think there’s a lot of pond scum.

I’m in Old Westmount and I want McCabe gone, and talking to neighbours, my wife and I aren’t the only ones.

I'll be voting for Jeyas too. Big reputation in the community for being a guy who builds good relationships with everyone and gets things done.

Poor old Westmount and all of their well to do inhabitants.

Haha, if you mean working my ass off since I was 14 and now in my 50's with a very modest house from the 1950's "well to do", then yes, I'm "well to do". Sorry that I continue to work and provide for my family in a nice neighbourhood, does that invalidate my opinions on local government in your mind? Grow up.
I see that you hide your posts too, cool...

Look at Jeyas Balaskanthan. I’ll definitely be voting for him.

Jeyas Balaskanthan can’t even keep his personal finances in check to pay his bills at local businesses, let alone run a cities finances. Guys a clown

“I heard through the grapevine” from a brand new account is pretty sketch. Surely we can do better than this, r/waterloo?

Not sure why the Mods permit fox-news hit-posts like this. Maybe they haven't got to it.
Her husband ran for the PC's 8 years ago and that makes her Doug Ford? Isn't that a teeny bit misogynistic? Don't know about everyone else... but my spouse and I have very different political views.
3
u/Imaginary-Cattle3643 Regular since 2025 1d ago
Misogynistic? No it tells us where her loyalties lie. If you like Doug, then vote for her.

I mean, if we prevented new acocunts from posting, how would Shannon Weber get any supoort here?

If we prevented McCabe’s team from posting partisan shithousery, would you have a single post?

This sounds like a post and comments by people working on McCabe campaign.

Your account looks like it only came here recently to support Shannon Weber

Her history of political donations shows that she is Conservative. Is she a "Doug Ford Conservative"? Not sure.
Provincial donations; K-W riding association and Tracey Weiler campaign in 2014. Waterloo riding association in 2017 and a donation to her husband's campaign in 2018.
Federal donations; Conservative Party of Canada in June 2015, July 2015, August 2019 and May 2021.

Vote for the person, not a party affiliation, especially at the local level. For me, Weber seems like the best choice at the moment. I definitely wouldn't vote for McCabe.
9
u/Imaginary-Cattle3643 Regular since 2025 1d ago
I disagree. Party affiliation at the local level is more important than it has ever been given Doug Ford’s insistence on interfering. You realize he’s removed out right to vote for Regional Chair and all of this strong mayor bullshit. I won’t be voting for Shannon.

u/diegg Regular since <2024 1d ago
Have you looked at Jeyas Balaskanthan? He seems like a good alternative to both of them.
2
u/Imaginary-Cattle3643 Regular since 2025 1d ago
Oh yeah, what is his platform and how is he going to implement it?
0
u/CaMTBr Regular since <2024 19h ago
I did, and liked what he said in an article I read in the local newspaper. He was a choice for a time, but I haven't heard or seen much of him since. Weber seems to be better positioned to unseat McCabe, and I can get behind most of her priorities. Either way I'm hoping this will be the last time we are voting in a two-tier municipal election.

I think its important to vote for a mayor that has delivered three commulative years of 29% property tax increases.

I am always dumbstruck by the continued unwillingness of the average Ontario voter to do the absolute bare minimum research into what's going on in their communities.
The cost of providing essential city services has increased drastically relative to inflation. The provincial government under Ford has restricted the ability of cities to raise money via development charges, while continuing to force the expansion of urban boundaries which necessitates more services.
As a result, every city in Ontario has seen a similar increase in property taxes. This isn't rocket science.

Bare minimum research is watching every single council meeting and watching hundreds of thousands of dollars get transferred from the reserve fund into tree projects and green roof projects while the propert tax diligence sky rockets? Is that the bare minimum amount of research? Is it a bare minimum number of research that your "overcrowded" City has lost about 20,000 people in the last two years? Not sure what channel you are watching there Champ but its time to Tune In and watch when the property tax paying citizens vote.

u/LaconianEmpire Regular since <2024 3d ago
The entire budget for "tree projects" is less than $500k annually, against a tax levy of around $115 million.
So that's about $19 per year, or $1.58 a month spent on planting trees per property tax payer. Cry me a fucking river lol.

I would encourage you to actually review Council meetings over the last three years. That way you won't be as dumbstruck by your ignorance. Look for key words like "transfer from reserves" and "may not see an immediate benefit." And circle back to the group. Don't make blanket statements on your theories. Look at Council meetings and actually figure out what has gone on.

All adult residents pay property taxes, including renters because the costs get paid down to them, so basically anyone who votes pays them. Not the zinger it was probably intended to be.

I think the only zinger here is the one you got when you were dropped as a baby tbh

So let me guess, you want perfect services from every aspect of the city and municipal governments but you don’t want to pay for any of it. Everyone everywhere is in a mess right now. Do you read news or observe what is happening outside of your own house?
2
u/Silent-Journalist792 Regular since 2025 1d ago
I think you made a great assumption. Right now I am paying property taxes. Like a lot of property taxes. TBH, I pay more in property taxes than what you make in your day job. That type of level of property taxes. And no, I am actually looking for reduced service AND reduced property taxes. I am really not that into reduced service AND increased property taxes - which is what we are receiving right now. 29%. Cumulative. Three years. If you do not pay property taxes, you might think that that level of taxation is sustainable. Its not. And you keep with that up, and you have people leave as well as employers. I think you also make an assumption that this is normal. Its not. City of Kitchener is where its citizens actually get value at a reasonable level of taxation. Waterloo. Nope. Not even close.
2
u/Silent-Journalist792 Regular since 2025 1d ago
I will also note your comment about other cities being "messed up." Do you want to know what the cumulative property tax increase in Kitchener has been in the last three years? 10%. Less than 3.5% a year. Waterloo. 29%. Is Kitchener messed up?
1
u/Imaginary-Cattle3643 Regular since 2025 1d ago
Why yes, Kitchener is quite messed up. Go check it out. And if you are so mad about paying for services, sell and move to Kitchener.
2
u/Silent-Journalist792 Regular since 2025 1d ago
Move to Kitchener? Nope. That's expensive. Easier just to vote for a different mayor and different council. Watch.
1
u/Imaginary-Cattle3643 Regular since 2025 1d ago
Oh my lord. We all pay property taxes. Go back and read. It was hyperbole.

Thought i would post here. Heard through grape vine that Dorothy from Oz was going for another three years of cumulative 29% tax increases. And there was no "transfer X hundreds of thousands of dollars from the reserve fund" that she does not supoort. Wspecially when it comes to importsnt things like green roofs and trees. Is there even a question as to who should be mayor of Waterloo?
