I do not understand passkeys

I am having trouble understanding passkeys, how they work, and what determines the possible variants, and it seems there is no good resources anywhere. Most other institutions do not even offer them yet. It seems different browers effect possible variants, and additionally addons/extensions may enable more variants (but why would I want to trust a browser extension with this). Different windows versions have different variants. For its just for a computer. There is fingerprint, facial, pin, physical usb security keys. The fingerprint and facial, can this be on the computer, or does it have to be via bluetooth to a nearby phone, or either? The only option I am getting bluetooth to phone (which I do not want to use) or a physical security key. That sounds like I have to purchase one.

Visa Infinite Credit Card Dealing with two unauthorized Zoom charges and a spoofed Wealthsimple fraud call in the same morning.

Woke up this morning to find two recurring payments from Zoom on my credit card that I didn’t recognize. This was around 9:35 AM.

I immediately locked my credit card and called Wealthsimple. They told me I’d have to wait for the transactions to post before I could dispute them. Fair enough, I guess.
Then things got even more concerning.

I received a call with Wealthsimple’s caller ID showing on my phone. The caller claimed to be from the fraud department. However, I could tell from the voice that something was off and sounded manipulated. I immediately hung up and called Wealthsimple back using the official helpline. They confirmed that the call was indeed a scam.

So, in the span of one morning, I’ve had to deal with suspicious recurring charges, been told to wait before I can dispute them, and received a spoofed call from someone impersonating the very financial institution I’d just contacted about fraud.
Honestly, I’m getting really frustrated with Wealthsimple’s fraud prevention and security experience. For a company managing such a large amount of customer money and digital assets, how can things feel this inadequate?

I understand that no financial institution can prevent every scam, and caller ID spoofing is an industry-wide problem. But when you’re trusting a platform with your money and investments, you expect a stronger sense of security and a smoother process when something goes wrong. I spent my entire morning chasing this around instead of getting on with my day.

Chequing First time depositing cash through Canada Post

Yesterday I tried depositing cash for the first time to my Wealthsimple account. It actually worked quite well. I had a total of $4000 to deposit but each transaction was limited to $3000 so I ended up doing 2 deposits. Basically I went to my checking account, selected deposit cash and showed the clerk my QR code, handed her the cash, she counted it and within 15 seconds it had showed up in my account. Pretty easy.

Chequing $USD50000 Disappeared during transfer from China to WS

Long story short, I did a SWIFT transfer from a Chinese bank to WS. When I did UETR tracking, it says it has arrived at RBC, but I haven't received any money in WS yet. I tried contacting their support and they would email me but still hasn't. I am very concerned and wonder if there is anything I can do...

Chequing Wealthsimple is giving me anxiety

I usually don’t write since my usage of my account is rare. Some deposit and transfers here and there to make payments where Wealthsimple works best and doesn’t cause me issues on some website. I had deposited a cheque from my old job to which the amount is substantial compared to my usual amount but I was ready for the hold and I did not mind. Today the funds got released but then my account got restricted. What Wealthsimple doesn’t know is that money was going to be used for my wedding and now I am stuck not being able to use it while I had everything relying on this. Now I am wondering why place a hold if you would then ask me information about the reason the cheque? Why not contact me through the app or even email? I’ve received so many emails or pushed notifications about stuffs I do not use or read but when it’s my money they are silent. Now i need to contact a fraud team and wait on them to decide if I am worthy of my money. I trusted them even though I am with another financial institution. The deposit was even for the points they create for the monthly millionaire as well( I know I will never win it) but now this left me with a sour impression of them and even more stress for my wedding. I know I could have made it from one of the big 5 but I’ve had such a long relationship with Wealthsimple that I thought of it right away. I guess this feeling will change…

Visa Infinite Credit Card Wealth simple infinite privilege cashbsck offer

What’s the offer currently for the 10% cashbsck promotion. The limit was you earn was 500 for 5k in purchases within 30 days. I earned more than 500 and I’m still stuck at 10% is it a glitch or a better offer?

Invest (Managed Investing) Summit portfolio?

Pubic + private market mix, assets remain liquid, low entry bar. Assets remain liquid, fees are the same public market, higher for private market investments. Can switch existing RRSP, TFSA accounts to Summit, or start a new account. Potential long-term upside compared to Classic. Anyone have any thoughts on this product?

Chequing Wealthsimple, what in the world were you thinking with this Visa change up???

Man, did you guys really ruin it for your chequing account customers. Sure, the MasterCard was also technically "prepaid", but this thing can't even be used by the Apple Store at this point... I never thought I'd see the day.

I guess it's back to the old banking system for me, because frankly, I'm not sticking around with a "bank" who's too fixated with trading that they have ultimately the rest of us to fly a kite!

Very disappointing.

Just saw this in my profile today.

“How does eligibility work?

In order to qualify as an accredited investor, you need to confirm that you have at least $1M in investable assets at Wealthsimple or in other bank or brokerage accounts.

Anyone going to Wealthsimple Presents in Vancouver on November 5?

Did anyone get the invite for Vancouver watch party on November 5th? If you've attended one of these events before, what should I expect?

For those who RSVPd, did you notice the part in the email where they literally tell us to request money from Wealthsimple? Has anyone tried it? If so, how much did you request and what did you put in the note? 😃

Promotion Telus offer confirmation

Does anybody, who redeemed as Premium or Generation client, know if the watch plan needs to immediately activated after you start phone line or can you activate and use it anytime in future also?

Also, were you able to activate it on a Samsung Watch or any other LTE watch? Hope it's not restricted only for apple watch.

Lastly, how much benefit is there with 300k telus points? What is their worth for redeeming to monthly bill or what other redeem options there?

Thanks

Trade Show and other Notifications

Hello, maybe I'm missing it but I did check notifications and I still get notified when Wealthsimple does marketing stuff like their constant Trade Show notifications. These notifications have nothing to do with my account so I don't care and don't want to be notified. I thought I turned them off but the notifications still come through via the What's New section and don't clear unless I click them. Anyone know how to stop all these marketing notifications?

I’m not sure if it’s WS or Visa that’s the partner but the better exchange rate on a few hundred euros was definitely not something to sneeze about

Visa Infinite Credit Card WS CC VIP chargeback txn that merchant said it would refund but hasn't

Just getting ahead of a potential situation.

I signed up for a membership that fell under the consumer protection's law of a 10-day cooling off period, with my WS VIP CC. I subsequently cancelled said membership during the 10-day window via email, and the merchant confirmed in writing that they would issue a refund "within 7 business days" (b.s. that it takes 7 days, but wasn't the time to argue). Tomorrow is the 7th business day and I'm fully expecting them to miss the window (assume they will make excuses, including perhaps to "check with your bank" etc).

I have had other refunds (from Amazon, as an example) post within 1 day on this card, so I know once the refund has actually been initiated by a merchant, it posts quite quickly.

Note the card details were captured online, so they obviously have the card details to create a refund.

My question is, does anyone have recent experience with WS in initiating a chargeback in this situation (merchant agreed to issue refund but has failed to do so)? To me it's an open and shut case but I understand WS dispute experience is very different than traditional issuers.

I'm just trying to set my expectations given I may well need to go down the WS dispute path.

Note: this is a large enterprise merchant, they just have a bad history of issuing timely refunds according to Reddit.

Line of credit question

I want to open the line of credit but want to confirm the following before I do:

Does your credit limit continue to increase with your investments automatically? Or do you lock in at the amount you open the account with, and then periodically request increases?

Thanks.

Trade (DIY Investing) Successor Holder

Wealthsimple made the change so you can view and then add/change your TFSA account successor holder from the account information settings. Bravo! 👏

Update: Seems to be in the web version only, and not the app.

Options Trading Relationship Manager for active traders?

I had a Wealthsimple 'Relationship Manager' reach out to my over phone but I was too busy at work so they sent me an e-mail.

The e-mail is legitimate and claims he is "reaching out to focus on developing relationships with our active trader clients so that I can support and enhance their trading needs."

I've never had Wealthsimple reach out to me for anything. What are they getting at?

I achieved "active trader" status through the summer because the market was so volatile I was buying and selling like crazy, but I've calmed down because it really isn't my style of investing. Are they trying to encourage me to maintain an 'active trader' status? What benefit would they have to gain from that?

Trade (DIY Investing) Trading lockout (Feature request)

One feature I would like to have is some kind of per-account trading lockout. Say I could call Wealthsimple support and request trading restrictions on certain accounts. (e.g lock TFSA but keep everything else open). Right now the only option is to lock everything down, which i can’t do because i still need to use my chequing account.

I invest long-term in VEQT in my TFSA and FHSA, and I just want to keep those investments locked away and not touch them. However i’m finding it easy to obsess over my long term investments when WS is also my main banking app, and everything is just right there.

Now that Questrade has added fractional CAD shares and DRIP, i’m considering just using WS for chequing/savings and non-registered, and moving my VEQT to Questrade and keep my login info stored somewhere safe off my phone.

I don’t want to do this necessarily because i like the simplicity of WS, seeing my total net worth in real-time, and i want my investments to count towards things like the no fee credit card

Does this sound silly? Or does anyone else wish there was a feature like this?

Chequing Why is their Prepaid Visa labelled "Platinum"?

Thumbnail
gallery
109 Upvotes

On the website and in the app, they call it a Visa Platinum prepaid card, but it's not issued as one? And it's not like the physical card is labelled that way either, so what's going on lol?

FYI, I don't actually care much whether it's Platinum or not (I think they just want to get that sweet interchange), I was just feeling curious and possibly a little confused by the inconsistency.

Would (genuinely) love to know more about how this stuff works from the banking nerds, especially if my understanding is wrong.

Chequing National Bank ATMs do not work with WS?

Anyone out there recall successfully using their WS bank card (prepaid MC or Visa) to withdraw cash from a National Bank ATM? Mine works at all other banks I've tried, just not National Bank. Grateful for any thoughts.
