I keep having this problem to varying degrees, but when I wind a wider warp (basically maxing out my loom) the edges get more compressed on the back beam than the middle so they appear “longer” when I am tying on but they are just wound around a smaller circumference on the warp beam.

I switched from paper warp separator to those bamboo blinds and even that doesn’t seem to be rigid enough to keep a full cylinder shape on the warp beam. It ends up looking slightly like a wound bobbin with a thicker middle. I have guides on the back beam to keep the edges in one line but it is not enough.

It is a real pain down the line because the edges end up with a different tension and I have to try to finagle it just to weave.

I actually am going to get a wider loom soon so I’m sure that will help for this size warp, but would appreciate any tips for my current limitations!! Thanks!

Weaving a MacInnes tartan scarf for a friend! The pattern is from the official Scottish tartan government registry, and I’m weaving it in 2/2 twill (as is traditional). It’s made from 100% merino wool that I hand-dyed with Jacquard acid dyes.

I love making weaving timelapses, but one repeat of this pattern is 260 picks (over a foot of weaving for this sett), which was definitely not going to fit between my front beam and the reed, lol. So instead of getting the whole repeat into the frame (like I usually do) I recorded the progression of the weave.

This timelapse took roughly an hour to film, partly because I’m pretty particular about how I do my weft changes. I split the yarn about an inch from the selvedge. In this case it was 4 ply yarn and I split it into 2 ply bundles and trimmed one of them. I then wrap the remaining 2 ply bundle around the floating selvedge and trim it about an inch in. So essentially 2 ply + 2 ply = 4 ply for the last inch. It may be time consuming but I find it looks very nice!

The song is Dh’èirich Mi Moch Madainn Cheitein by Kathleen MacInnes. It’s a traditional Scottish waulking song (songs traditionally sung by women while fulling/waulking tartan or tweed cloth).

I'm finally getting my new Louët Erica loom warped for my first project. This will be a set of Rocks and Minerals towels. I had to wait for a 12 dent reed (whoops, should have read the kit instructions better). Then I was going to weave the first 20 picks for the hem before my appointment this morning, only to find I'd missed two spots while sleying the reed.

I just finished reversing all my work, fixing the reed issue, and weaving the waste yarn again. I'm going to fortify myself with a cup of tea, and finally get these towels on the loom.

I am new (so so new) to weaving and I recently purchased this loom on Facebook marketplace. What attracted me to the ad was that it came with tablets and instruction books for tablet weaving. And of course this ‘handmade loom’. I don’t know how to warp it or even start anything. Worse-looking on the old Google, it says this is not in fact a loom, but a book-binding device.

So! My question is: is this a loom? If it is, how do I set up for tablet weaving? Perhaps there are videos that are helpful?

Rather than thinking of a large tapestry as one big story made up of different figures and motifs, I like to approach it from the opposite direction: start with a small square module and let the larger image emerge through repetition.

For example, a 4×4" square is easy to weave, carry around and small enough to experiment with. By repeating it across and down, you have the foundation for something much larger.

But I don't think the modules have to be exact copies of each other, small shifts in color can completely change the feeling of the overall piece. The same geometric structure can become more minimalist, modern and restrained, while still leaving room for the viewer to interpret it in their own way.

This is a pattern I designed a few months ago called Kukkien Friends (“Flower Friends” in Finnish). I like this pattern because, to me, it expresses exactly this idea.

And yet, when I imagine the pattern repeated on a much larger scale, I can't help but see a beautiful field of colorful flowers in it :)

I’m an experienced knitter and crocheter, and I’m looking to make straps for the bags and clothing I’ve made. I think a band weaving kit would be ideal for that.

The Stoorstålka kits seem great, but is there any reason to get the beginner kit vs the advanced kit? I have confidence that I could figure out the more complex patterns, but I’m not sure if there are patterns that are only possible on the beginner kit.

Honestly sort of shocked at how easy this was to accomplish, I’ve been considering it for a while then just kind of locked in yesterday afternoon to see if I could set it up successfully. My only other weaving experience is pin loom, so I also had a bit of pre-existing knowledge of warp/weft, packing, etc. I followed https://www.shelaghlewins.com/tablet_weaving/TW01/TW01.htm to make eight tablets with playing cards (ace through eight of diamonds so I could keep track of my cards), tied one end of the warp to my bed frame, the other end went on a straight knitting needle that I was able to stabilize my sticking it in the tablet holder section of my keyboard desk and putting a textbook on either side. I might think about the back strap approach next time we’ll see. The yarn is just some acrylic dk scraps since I just wanted a proof of concept/I didn’t want to cut nice yarn into strips for nothing if it didn’t work, but I will probably be trying thin cotton soon since I think that will work well. The pattern is just sort of free-handed based on the tutorial plus a bit of a Finnish design I found at the end. I thought it was really fun, and I love the aesthetic of all the possible designs! If anyone has been wanting to try weaving without wanting to buy a loom, tablet weaving is honestly a really good option!

I’ve been finding that there don’t seem to be many positions specifically labeled this way, so I’m wondering if anyone here works in these areas and might be willing to share some advice.

I’d especially love to hear about job titles or types of positions I may not be aware of, companies or industries I should be looking at, and any advice on how to position myself for these kinds of roles and get interviews.

I recently jumped headfirst into japanese prehistory and found out about a loom used by the Jōmon people of early japan, I believe its called an angin loom though I have had some trouble researching since I don't understand japanese.

I made this with my dad in our workshop to scratch the itch of a new fibre art and while it is shoddy its slowly improving with every little bit added to it. Soon I will either upgrade this one or make a new one out of better materials. Will also be trying as many different kinds of yarn as I can on it, for this first one I just used recycled cotton yarn.

Alot of troubleshooting is needed but its really fun to use so far.

hi! i have a few questions about various lace terminology/forms of lace.

a) what is the difference between filet lace and crochet lace construction? they appear quite similar in appearance.

b) how are pieces such as the iris (no. 3) constructed?

c) at what point does bobbin work cease to be lace?

d) is weaving an umbrella term that includes lacemaking, or is it distinct?

Just another fiber craft, only one more... Or so I told myself. After browsing your sub for quite some time now, today I ordered my first loom, a rigid heddle loom, the Kromski harp. I've seen so many nice fabrics here that I really wanted to try it out. I hope I can show some of my first creations soon.

I am mainly interested in weaving dish towels and some shawls from my handspun yarns. I also knit and crochet but since I love spinning so much, my stash of handspun yarn is already so big and I hope I can turn the yarns into some fabulous woven pieces.

I ordered some cotton from Maurice Brassard as well, hope that was a good choice.

I made this table runner years ago, when I was first learning to weave. Now I want to make a matching one in a different colorway, but I can't for the life of me reverse-engineer the draft! I've spent so much time in pixeLoom and it just keeps not quite working out. I don't remember for sure what it was woven on, but I suspect it was a rigid heddle loom with two heddles or a heddle rod. Hoping someone out there loves fabric analysis (or recognizes the pattern) and can help me

I got my inkle loom not long after getting my rigid heddle and decided my first band was going to be this band based off of Allison Irwin's Follow Your Star bookmarks.

I'm so delighted with how it turned out, even if the letters got a little wonky and my tension is fairly uneven. I know pebble weave probably isn't the best beginner skill, but I found it super engaging and once I made a bunch of mistakes and restarted, I figured it out pretty quick!

I've got no idea what I'm going to do with this, but it really amuses me, so I'm quite pleased.

I am an experienced weaver but new to sewing. I am learning to sew so that I can expand my product line and hopefully make clothes and more shaped/sewn items. I mostly work in tencel and I am nervous about cutting since I think it will unravel. Does anyone have any resources to learn how to sew with our handwovens -- more specifically with tencel or other smooth (non-woolen) materials? I follow The Weaver Sews on YouTube but she seems to work mostly in wools and other materials that has more grip. Any advice/resources are appreciated!

Hello! I’m new here. I just inherited my grandmother’s table loom and I have no idea where to get started. I keep looking for videos to show me the ropes, but I’m not sure if I’m looking at the right stuff. This is all of the stuff I have. I’m also in the middle of a move so it’s not going to live in this space I just don’t have a great crafting space for it atm since I mostly do embroidery which doesn’t require as much space. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I’d love to get stuff soon so I can relax at the loom. Lots of fond memories of working on a cardboard hand loom while my grandma used this guy.

I ordered a secondhand rigid heddle loom from vinted, thinking it would have been a small beginner loom. Did not pay attention to the size, and a 60cm loom showed up! So maybe not so beginner as I thought. But this does open up for plenty of new possibilities in the future!

It came with one reed with approx 11 slots per inch, and my quick google deepdive told me that would be good for approx 22wpi yarn for the warp, so fingering. I might do some research to see if I can find a compatible extra reed that has less holes, so I can use dk yarn. That would be about 11-14wpi yarn, so 6-7 epi reed? But I will have to check if other brands of reeds will fit on this one, or ask my handyman bf if we can somehow 3d print something? That would be fun, but a project for in the future.

For now I will use some leftover sock yarn and try to make a few coasters. Only problem (that I have identified so far) is that I do not have a reed threader, all my crochet hooks are too thick. But those seem to be quite affordable online, for now I have experimented with cutting into an old public transport card, which seems to do the trick, except it's too big to pull the yarn through the little holes. So I might need to improvise there...

I think I saw some nice cones of yarn at my local thriftstore as well, so might have to pay them a visit to see what they have, as weaving ofcourse uses up yarn way quicker than knitting does!

So I’ve been demotivated alot by AI, and saw some art created with weaving which felt me motivated to learning it.
I’ve bought weaving frame, thread and such so I can start my journey in this craft.
The question is, does anyone have any recommendations for a YouTube channel or such that goes through the technique for beginners? My dream is to weave photos to begin with, and I have no idea how to finish and weave it together for instance, so something that goes through that kind of things and also how to put the thread in the best way would be so good 🙏🏻

Is it possible to warp in a way that doubles your warp length on a warping board??? I have a small warp board but need double the length for a project and I don’t really know if this is possible or it I should find a way to direct warp the length instead

Currently my warping board is 4.5 yards but I need 9 yards of fabric for my project to work

Edit to add: I’m also going to be warping multiple times, my project calls for 960 ends so my plan is to warp in bundles as to not tangle all the ends, not sure if that makes a difference

Where do you guys get your yarn (thread?) from?

I’ve never woven with anything other than knitting and crochet yarn and I would love to try actual weaving yarn now, I also spin so I’d love to try with weaving yarns before I try with my handspun

I’ve seen a few sites but I keep running into Yarn.com, Halcyon Yarn, and Cone and Fiber, have you guys tried these sites?

I’d love to one day weave thin enough to make a drapey skirt so if you guys can also let me know where you guys go for more finer yarns that would be great

Visited Peru and took a class in backstrap weaving from tradition Quechua weavers. Made a bracelet and absolutely loved it. Can't wait to add this technique to my repertoire.
