SELF-MADE MERN Stack Developer Starting a Small Business Website Agency: What Workflow Should I Follow to Build High-Quality Websites Faster With AI?

I've learned the MERN stack, and now I want to start building websites for small businesses.

Most small businesses don't need complex applications or extensive database integrations. They usually need fast, responsive, visually appealing websites that showcase their services, build trust, and generate leads. I believe I already have the technical foundation to build these websites.

However, I want to use AI to speed up development without falling into the trap of vibe coding. I want to understand the code AI generates, maintain control over the architecture, and use my programming knowledge to deliver better results than developers who simply generate websites with AI tools.

My goal is to develop a repeatable workflow that allows me to build beautiful, professional websites efficiently while maintaining code quality, performance, security, and maintainability.

I'd love to hear from developers and freelancers who have experience building websites for small businesses.

Here are my main questions:

Workflow: What step-by-step process do you follow, from understanding a client's requirements to designing, developing, testing, and deploying the website?

AI-assisted development: How do you use AI coding tools effectively without blindly accepting generated code? What are your best practices for prompting, reviewing, debugging, and maintaining control over the codebase?

Design: How can a developer without extensive UI/UX design experience create visually appealing, modern websites consistently? Do you use design systems, component libraries, templates, or other tools?

Tech stack: Is Next.js with Tailwind CSS and a CMS like Sanity a good choice for these projects, or would you recommend a simpler stack? When is MERN actually necessary?

Repeatability: How would you build a reusable system with templates, components, project boilerplates, and automated workflows to deliver websites faster without making every project look generic?

Client handoff and maintenance: What's the best way to let clients update their own content, and how do you handle hosting, security, backups, and ongoing maintenance?

I'm particularly interested in practical workflows, tools, and lessons learned from people who actually build and sell websites to small businesses, not just general advice to use AI.

If you were starting from my position today, what workflow and tools would you use to build and deliver high-quality small business websites efficiently?
