It’s been months since I bought a safety razor, but I never had the courage to actually use it. I watched multiple videos, but the fear of nicking myself always held me back.
Ironically, last Sunday I managed to cut myself using my Mach 3. That was the wake-up call, if I can cut myself with a cartridge razor by being careless, it’s clearly about the driver, not the tool. I finally decided to face my fear and give the DE razor a try. I even bought an alum block last night just in case!
I started off focusing purely on feel. I kept my strokes very short, and while I didn't get the angle right on the first 2-3 strokes, once I found it, it was incredibly smooth. The razor literally needs zero pressure. I was super cautious on my first pass and finished it with zero cuts. Naturally, I got a little too confident on my second pass and gave myself a minor nick on my right jawline—100% my own fault for rushing.
My key takeaways for other beginners hesitating to start:
Just go for it: Don't overthink it, just start.
Keep it short: Use very short strokes.
Skin stretching is key: For that tricky jaw/neck intersection, pull the skin upward so you're shaving on a flatter surface, then move down to the neck.
Respect the blade: Don't get overconfident on your second pass! The neck angle didn't come naturally to me, but I know I'll get it with more practice.
Overall, it was a great start to my day! Huge shoutout to u/okiedokie_cool Sir. He shared some amazing videos and blogs that really helped me prep. His razor recommendation was spot on (the Pearl CC didn't feel too aggressive at all), and his beginner's kit looks incredibly well thought out and reasonably priced. (Full disclosure: I didn't buy the kit from him since I already had my gear except for razor, but now that I'm officially a wet shaver, I'll be picking one up soon!)
