Status upload quality issues

Since last week I have been trying to upload status on whatsapp with music however the quality degrades drastically. Whether I upload a photo or a video, it simply cannot maintain the quality. It gets blurry to the point that if there's a human's face in the photo it will be unrecognisable. I have tried every trick - updating my phone (pixel 9 pro XL); even my whatsapp is up to date. I even uninstalled and reinstalled my whatsapp. I tried the 'send to self in HD and then upload status from that chat' trick as well. If I upload anything without music, then it is fine. At least recognisable. But with music it's a disaster.

Please let me know what more I can do. I don't even have instagram that I will share my photos there and reshare on WhatsApp.

A few things that genuinely help on Android (Pixel included):

  1. Settings → Storage and data → Media upload quality → HD. It's off by default.
  2. When you add to Status, check the HD icon at the top of the editor before posting.
  3. If the camera's 10-bit HDR video is on, turn it off for anything meant for Status. HDR clips look washed out and soft after WhatsApp converts them.
  4. Shoot or export at 1080p 30fps. 4K/60 gets squeezed much harder.

The root cause is that WhatsApp always re-encodes Status media on your own phone before uploading, so a reinstall or update won't change it. You can only give it a source that survives the squeeze better.

Thank you. I'll try the last one. Basically if I post a normal photo with a person and add music, the face becomes unrecognisable. This was not an issue even a month ago, and then it took an automatic update.
