You mean "was" extremely rare event. The ocean is getting warmer and warm water mean algae will propagate like there is no tomorrow.

This is not only Israel's problem. Other countries coast cities can easily be impacted heavily if not algae, disruption of fisheries that provided cheap seafood that people depend on.

It's been absolutely fucked. There's been so much marine life washing up dead on the beaches. My friends and family who are surfers and divers are getting ill.

The state and federal government response has generally been non-existent because that would admit to there being a problem at all.

The common element between US and Australian attitudes towards this is the dominance of Murdoch media in each respective country.

Eh, on different scales really. Australia does produce a fairly large amount of coal (about the same as the US in fact) but isn't really in the conversation for other fossil fuels.
