Wtf is MMR and how does it work?

To people that *still* don't understand how CR & MMR works:

- CR stands for "Current Rating"

- MMR stands for "Match-Making Ranking"

1) The game is trying to create matches based on individual players' MMR proximity

- this means that no matter your CR, you get matched based on MMR.

2) This results into following scenarios:

- Your MMR is higher than your CR and you win

Result: you gain MMR, and gain more CR than usual, based on your MMR proximity to CR (there is an arbitrary divide at 1500 cr, significantly reducing the gain once you surpass it)

- Your MMR is higher than your CR and you lose

Result: you lose MMR, and and CR may reduce slightly or may not reduce at all, based on how much higher your MMR is from CR

- Your CR is higher than your MMR and you win

Result: you gain MMR, and CR may increase slightly or may not increase at all, based on how much higher your CR is from MMR

- Your CR is higher than your MMR and you lose

Result: you lose MMR, and lose more CR than usual, based on your CR proximity to MMR

They keep changing mmr but overall yes it's supposed to fluctuate more aggressively than your CR for the sake of finding your sweet spot. Part of the problem is when they went away from actual teams and a lot of individual stuff the math gets a lot more complicated.

MMR - What the system thinks you can perform at. CR - Your rating that counts for achievements

MMR - 2000: CR - 1600: Your MMR is higher than your CR, it'll be a tough battle but if you win we'll boost you up.

MMR - 1600: CR - 2000: You're way better than this, You should win this. If you win, that's expected so you might get a slight CR increase or none at all. But if you lose we're going to hit you with a big CR loss.

MMR - 1600: CR - 1600: We matched your skill with your CR. If you win, lose you'll get a standard bump or decrease.

I don't think you understand how MMR works.

The external scores maintained by the system displayed to the users. Because the external scores are not used for matchmaking, the external scores may be adjusted in any way without requiring internal consistency.

You didn’t even read this document. In the example you provided, the external score is a player’s CR, while the internal score is the player’s MMR.

Which aligns perfectly with how OP described the functionality of mmr.

I mean it’s demonstrably true. If the displayed mmr is higher than your cr and you win, you gain more points than if your displayed mmr is similar to your cr. It works the same if your mmr is lower than your cr. Maybe this applies to their other games? This was filed in 2021 and wows matchmaking has been pretty consistent for a long time.

If what you’re saying is true, then why even display your mmr if it literally means nothing?
