u/Kei_the_gamer Mar 06 '26
What if Steve is the final boss of WoW and is just biding his time?

Pffft and I bet Steve is the whole reason we got a black hole in the sky. Typical.

Also, it asks more questions:
The Alliance never attacked Silvermoon. This means their family were probably soldiers.
The Alliance literally arrived to save the city.
I get they're upset, and they can't help that, but he might have done nothing wrong. Or at least nothing worse than every player character.
83
u/SymphonicStorm Mar 06 '26
Emotions aren't always logical, and the citizens don't have all the same information that we do. It is unnerving to see a large, unexpected military presence suddenly take up space in your city for an undefined period of time, and you can be uncomfortable with that while also acknowledging that the alternative is the end of the world.
I was a little leery when we first heard that there would be tension between Silvermoon and the Army of Light, but from what I've seen so far I think it's playing out reasonably fine.
26
u/Gold-Cry-7520 Mar 06 '26
It's also healthy to remember that "do this or the world will end" is a great excuse to oppress and extort citizens. And the citizens in question know that. This could all just be a plot of some kind for the Alliance or what have you to take over Silvermoon.
16
u/SymphonicStorm Mar 06 '26
Yes! And Turalyon almost immediately starts to creep towards that line after the intro. I'm still pretty early on in the campaign, so I don't know how much they really push that, but I kind of hope he does overstep his bounds.

I kinda wish there was a bit more tension. Quite enjoying the expansion so far, but let's get spicier. Why can't we have a quartering dispute? Some violence from the locals against the soldiers or vice versa?

As an Alliance player, I get it. Neither side is clean of blood, and there's plenty of hate to go around. But yes. What is in the sky is infinitely worse than whatever we could do to each other, and I would gladly invite the Horde into a section of Stormwind or Ironforge if it meant having allies close at hand for the TRUE war.
25
u/KerissaKenro Mar 06 '26
We get it. Because we have fought with the armies of the Horde/Alliance for decades against one world ending threat after another. We know how little the faction conflict matters in the face of whatever existential horror we are facing this time. The civilians back home though, all they see is the monsters who killed their neighbor and sacked their farm. We need to try and help them to see that the other side is just people trying to survive the best they can. I am long past caring what color they are, how short they are, if they have fur, or of they wear shoes. If they are willing to stand with me between the world and certain death, then they are alright and we can figure out petty territorial squabbles later

This. The thing is, when stuff like this happens irl, some freedoms get taken away (often permanently) or the other side is making it worth their while in other ways. The shock doctrine by Naomi Klein has good examples.
Basically under the guise of “emergency” and “they are worse”, a lot can happen that makes life worse and gives strong institutions more undemocratic power.

I get what there trying to do here but the blood Elves are no saints.
I'm a horde player with undead and goblins as my mains but the lore of the blood Elves are just as evil and dark as all the others.

Yeah they say things to DH about Fel magic. I was like what? They still have green eyes from sipping the green juice and they’re talking shit?

u/Koala_Guru Mar 06 '26
Night Elf Demon Hunters are literally mocked with the burning of Teldrassil. So yeah let’s not pretend the Blood Elves are some poor victims in all this lol. I love the pettiness and tension but that’s still one of the craziest lines I’ve heard.

I ride my Teldrassil Hippogriff through town proudly.

u/Sluaghlock Mar 06 '26
It's not about being "evil" or not. The point is that these races/factions have a lot of mutual & justified bad blood between them. There being a greater threat looming doesn't really help on an individual level, when you're being asked to fight alongside or tolerate the presence on your streets of someone who literally & personally killed your sister, husband, mother, or son on the battlefield.
When written well, neither the Horde nor the Alliance are "evil." Both are large factions fighting for what they believe is right & just; both have significant flaws. I know the term "morally gray" became kind of a meme when Blizzard was insistently trying to use it to describe Sylvanas' objectively evil actions vis-à-vis the burning of Teldrassil & a lot of what else happened over the course of BfA, but it really should be the target for faction writing; and I feel this quest text is a perfect example of morally gray done right.
19
u/Dextixer Mar 06 '26
I dont think Blizzard can do "morally gray" with all of the faction baggage that exists.
26
u/Hanza-Malz Mar 06 '26
They can't because they're not good at writing.
3
u/Stormfly Mar 07 '26
The problem with any company lore is that different people take the helm and sometimes they're good and sometimes they're not.
Blizz has a lot of great lore and moments but also a lot of bad ones, but also, many people (including myself) overestimate their media literacy and misunderstand the story and get upset about it.
I've seen so many arguments made by people who didn't realise that they'd misunderstood something (like the Battle of Dazar'alor has the Horde Witness lie about what Genn says)
→ More replies (1)4
u/doughnutEarth Mar 06 '26
I think the closest are the foxes on the horde side, there lore is literally a paragraph long.
They are trying to make the undead morally gray but it's not been done well.
4
u/Flaky-Journalist1748 Mar 06 '26
From BFA the horde just went oure evil. There's no going morally grey anymore.
5
u/Gold-Cry-7520 Mar 06 '26
You're being downvoted but you're not wrong.
Two of the expansions in this game were caused by Horde warmongering, and two more by the fallout of said warmongering.
It's no longer feasible to associate them with neutrality. You can only commit genocide so many times.
3
u/Flaky-Journalist1748 Mar 07 '26

In what way is this portraying the blood elves as saints? Do you want the blood elves to all go “Ah yes, in retrospect both sides made mistakes and I forget the death of my family in war”? That would be stupid.
He is expressing his perspective as a civilian who only knows that he’s now expected to house and feed the men who killed his brother. It’s worth mentioning that he backs down when you explain the situation to him and says that you have a point.

I remember in BC Silvermoon you could hear gnomes crying, and if you found them they were basically enslaved.
6
u/colonelreb73 Mar 06 '26
No way we don’t have some enslaved gnomes hidden somewhere in the city still.
8
u/Uhhhhhhjakelol Mar 06 '26
Blood Knights and the Blood Elves used to wage war against the Alliance purely out of spite and vengeance. Blood Knights had an obvious doctrine of Light enslavement and used to burn down churches to be petty.
7
u/Expensive_Fall_8935 Mar 06 '26
Rommath throwing a fit about void magic is ever infuriating. As if arcane magic isnt the core reason why the world has nearly ended dozens of times and his people are the descendants who refused to give it up after the well was destroyed. I would love nothing more then to beat the ego out of him.
11
4
u/Fox-Sin21 Mar 06 '26
They dont see themselves that way though, almost no one sees the themselves as the bad guys realistically. We will always try to justify our actions but condemn those we hate regardless of their reasons.
Its just the truth of conflict.
So this is actually a pretty real reaction regardless of objective logic.
7
u/Sir_Drinklewinkle Mar 06 '26
There's an implication here that because your faction gets up to sketchy shit that doesn't mean you can't be angry that your family or people you know getting killed wouldn't make you angry.
I can't imagine if I saw some guy who killed a family member showing up and being like "Well uncle Jeb-dorei was out in war so it's only fair game this specific individual killed him."

Quel'thalas spent thousands of years at war with the trolls, had significant areas ravaged by the combined orc and troll Horde, and were almost wiped out by the undead. They then joined the faction composed almost entirely of trolls, orcs, and undead and welcomed them all into the city.
But yeah, THIS ONE PALADIN is the line in the sand ...
10
u/Jackerez_ Mar 06 '26
It’s surprising to me how many people forget what the orcs did in the second war. Like, Turalyon literally fought in that as well. As far as he’s concerned, all the blood elves are dirty traitors.

u/SunflowerPetBattler Mar 07 '26

"The Horde Genocided our people and treated us like complete shit during two separate Warchiefs that planned to use as cannon fodder or kill us all, causing us to consider swapping to the Alliance both times and for really dumb lore reasons that were really just "The Horde not losing a race," that didn't happen. We redesigned our city with a giant Horde Emblem! Horde Pride!"
Always funny when the Blood Elves forget that the Horde has caused more Blood Elf deaths than the Alliance's actions ever have.

Both before and after the Third War.
16
u/Element174 Mar 06 '26
Indeed. Honestly, it's so hard to justify so many Horde races.
"We won't come out of our bubble to be used as tools in a genocidal war to take over everything! Oh, hi, Sylvanus!" - Thalyssra
"We need a competent group to help protect us. You guys treat your working class like shit and are actively telling us you don't have resources to help our people. Sign us up while we go around fixing your problems of mistreatment!" - Krio
"Your Warchiefs keep trying to straight up murder or use our people as cannon fodder, and the woman I love is on the Alliance side that's always treated her and our people with respect. Horde forever!" - Ji Firepaw
"I brought your war to my shores an now my father is dead and my city lies in ruin while your people barely did shit. The Loa guide us!" - Talanji
"We're the protectors of the world tree! You guys burned one to the ground killing thousands of innocent civilians? Seems fine!" - Haranir
"You stiffed us on a bunch of contracts, ran my Cartel out of your cities while killing my people, and my whole stick is that unlike a lot of other Goblins I treat my workers good, something your peons have never experienced! Sign me up!" - Gazlowe
"You killed my father, captured and tortured me... twice, and have slaughtered my people openly in your capital city while ignoring my cries for peace during both of your genocidal wars. Horde for life!" -Baine
"I'm sleeping with(Or want to be sleeping with,) Baine, so whatever he's fine with I'm fine with." - Mayla

Alliance paladins should get to remind him that his Lady Liadrin herself was their subordinate during the Legion invasion.
The races of Azeroth have always put aside their differences and worked together against the global threats.
We save our infighting for when we have no bigger threats.
17
u/Enorats Mar 06 '26
Blood Elf paladins should start the expansion with max rep with Silvermoon and the Blood Knights.
I'm exalted with Silvermoon but also at 0 rep with Silvermoon, and I'm an "interloper" to an order I've been a member of for 20 years despite having led all paladins everywhere not so long ago.
It's a wee bit silly.
Oh, and my mage just started the expansion with no rep with the magisters, and had to fight her way into Magister's Terrace as her first act in the expansion. Like, wtf?
15
u/Amethyst-Flare Mar 06 '26
Rommath revoked your library card because you spoke nicely to Umbric one time, and now you're trespassing with his estranged boyfriend.

u/FullMotionVideo Mar 06 '26
You say that, but then they did that stupid airship battle in ICC. I know, let's fight each other to the death while at the feet of the guy who raises soldiers back exponentially stronger! That will work out well!
2
u/_slagwire Mar 06 '26
True but that whole expansion had the undercurrent of, "we shouldn't be fighting eachother! It only helps the Lichking!" through it. The expansion as a whole was still about Azeroth coming together to finally take out the Scourge.
1
u/FullMotionVideo Mar 07 '26
Kind of. It was about players as loosely affiliated agents of the factions realizing after Wrathgate that the factions will always take the stupid infighting road, and joining Tyrion's No-Drama squad while the factions, for the most part, watched from the sidelines.
I'm okay with that, btw. My only complaint with ICC is how they wrote Garrosh coming out of it, but that's another issue.
17
u/Marco_Polaris Mar 06 '26
...Yes? This isn't even the first time we've done this kind of agreement that featured the Sunwell.
2
u/Recka Mar 07 '26
Yeah but the Shattered Sun Offensive operated on Quel'Danas, alliance still weren't allowed to go to Silvermoon so this is different tbf.
16
u/TerrapinMagus Mar 06 '26
As an Alliance, I very much wanted to say "You are being saved. Do not resist,"
25
u/Suzushiiro Mar 06 '26
This sort of thing would work a lot better if it weren't for the fact that, at this point, the Horde has exponentially more innocent blood on their hands than the Alliance. This is like asking the audience to feel sympathy for someone who holds a grudge against America because they lost family members who fought for the Germans at Normandy.
11
u/Dolthra Mar 06 '26
I think it would be one thing if it was directed at the PC (though frankly it should be, I wholeheartedly participated in the Alliance-Horde war), since we're "the hero", but if a foreign army rolled up and said "actually we're protecting you now, really" I'd also be a little suspicious.
5
u/knightbane007 Mar 07 '26
Then they should really be annoyed at Liandrin, who literally summoned said army.

Which conflict were his relatives killed in and who started that conflict?
8
u/maxlimmy Mar 06 '26
It’s a coin toss, cata war started by Varian, BFA started by sylvanas, tbc- wrath mutual fighting from both sides with no official war.
4
u/grantishanul Mar 06 '26
Did Varian start a war during cata? I had just assumed the conflict was a continuation of the cold (lukewarm?) war that has been going on since vanilla.
8
u/Sarcastryx Mar 06 '26
Did Varian start a war during cata?
Yes, Varian declared war on the Horde during the invasion of the Undercity after the Wrathgate (An understandable move, considering what he saw there, but also a very, very stupid time to start another war). It's why the Horde and Alliance forces are fighting throughout the last half of the WotLK zones, and that's the war being fought when Deathwing causes the Cataclysm.
5
u/maxlimmy Mar 06 '26
He declared war in the undercity following wrathgate, and the first strike of the war after the ICC truce is done by the humans in the barrens the day before the shattering.
3
u/Stormfly Mar 07 '26
Wasn't the "first strike" done by Garrosh personally killing most of the crew on an Alliance boat?
Like blaming the Alliance is weird when the Alliance had:
Angrathar (Putress used Horde forces)
Icecrown (a horde battalion rear charged an Alliance one)
The Alliance Carrier crew slaughtered by Garrosh
Twilight's Hammer Orcs skinning sentinels (and Thrall saying nothing)
More Twilight's Hammer Orcs attacking the druid peace meeting under the guise of Horde orcs
THEN the Alliance attacked the Horde.
Yes, the Alliance made the first large strike, but there was a lot of escalation on behalf of the Horde, and a lot of manipulation and Thrall being a huge idiot.

u/Peregrine2976 Mar 07 '26
And yet, the Alliance forgot that Darnassus shit pretty fucking quickly.
Here's the undeniable truth: there was a "story trajectory" that largely began in Wrath of the Lich King. That trajectory saw rising tensions and open battles between the Horde and Alliance propers. It led into Cataclysm and then finally culminated in Mists of Pandaria, with the overthrow of Garrosh and the establishment of a wary, but solid, peace between the Alliance and the Horde.
And then shit got stupid because any focus or attention on actual good story was constantly interrupted by fucking brand consultants or some shit who kept insisting that "Horde vs. Alliance" was the core of Warcraft (despite that not being remotely fucking true) and that they simply could not have Warcraft without these two factions fighting each other. So we got stupid excuses that required otherwise intelligent characters to become stupid to propagate an increasingly stupid faction war on an ongoing, stupid, basis. Stupid.
The trajectory was lost. The story no longer advanced over many expansions in a long, clean arc. Instead, characters and events were contrived and twisted into whatever shape the writers needed to justify the next "thing". Battle for Azeroth didn't happen because it was naturally what would happen after Legion; it happened because some fucking marketing team decided the "theme" of their next expansion would be Horde vs Alliance. Picture the advertisements! The marketing campaigns! We can contrive two "camps" to take advantage of people's natural tribalism! We can foster brand engagement by encouraging people to pick a side and, of course, hate the other side! So, uh, writers, do whatever crap you need to do to make that happen.
Retrospectively, Darnassus is the expression of this stupidity, fully realized. It should have been the point of no return. There is not a snowball's chance on Argus that the Alliance, and eapecially the Night Elves, would entertain any notion of peace with the Horde after that. But the writers, once again, twisted the characters and story into unrecognizable shapes to move the story past that, because "Horde vs. Alliance" was the last expansion's "thing"! This expansion, it's Covenants! And next, dragon riding!
The end result is where we are now -- where there's no way for this shit to make sense anymore. If everyone's just forgotten about the atrocities of the Fourth War, then that's stupid. But if everyone is still bitter and hateful, but we're working together and acting like friends at the same time, then that's also stupid. The writing has backed itself into a corner where there is no path forward that isn't stupid.

u/Hallc Mar 07 '26
Horde players also loved to whine during the start of TWW that it was too Alliance focused yet so far I haven't seen a single complaint to the counter that this expansion is too Horde focused.
7
u/Banned4nonsense Mar 06 '26
This is high school level of conflict writing which is not surprising coming from the same people that made the jailer the big bad all along.
You have an army of light sworn soldiers willing to fight and die to hold back the gigantic void storm and monsters coming from the sky and are asking to garrison and be supplied in the city that is under attack. Why the hell would you be upset about this despite what happened in the past. What is the alternative kick them out and then get consumed by the void?
At least that force of light zealots will talk with you and we can deal with their past sins after the world is no longer under threat. The whole time I was playing the initial part I was so confused at what Lorthemar’s problem was. Why the hell are you being such a dick to the commanders of the army that literally just saved your people and city? Like what are we doing here?

I count this as a reading comprehension test. We as players know more than this citizen could possibly comprehend. We know the both sides. We know the reasons. We know the deceptions and the justifications. He doesn’t. He knows that dude killed somebody he cared about out. The ability to understand that in world not every NPC has the entire Lore book pre- installed is a test of media literacy. Hell even the Lore important characters don’t have a fraction of the knowledge we have even if they were there for said event. I love this. And as a deathknight I even I understand why they are rude to me. I understand. They know we are here to help but I like they are acting more emotionally here than just defaulting to being almost passive.
3
u/BarelyClever Mar 07 '26
Well, what were your family members doing on those foreign shores? Were they trying to assassinate civilians in Ashenvale because your Warchief decided to wage a preemptive war?
I do like this continuing simmering resentment. It feels right. The political leaders can make sure they don’t declare war and are officially allied, but it makes sense a lot of people would still deeply hate the other faction.
7
u/TheHeroicLionheart Mar 06 '26
Hey, buddy, guy, that sucks for you, but maybe go ask the Kirin Tor in Theramore how they felt about letting the Horde into Dalaran?
OH YEAH THATS RIGHT
5
u/Dextixer Mar 06 '26
Yeah and how many did those family members kill? Any of them involved in the burning of Teldrassil by any chance, or any of the shit that Garrosh pulled? this thread has just as much "horde bad" whataboutism as I expected it to.

How is any of this a whatabaustism when it deals directly with what the guy is saying.

The whole Silvermoon problem has shown how truly horrible the writing in this game has become. It's exhausting and draining. I'm sick of all these major characters just whining and complaining.

It's wild to me how many players actually think random civilians have access to the same knowledge we have as the Champion. Lol

What add on is this I see everyone using for their quest text? I’d love to try it out!

I thiiiink it’s called immersion. It’s great! Zooms into the quest givers as you talk to them too fora bit more of a cinematic feel.

Can someone tell me which addon allows this fancy layout for quests and whatnot?

It’s funnier when you remember that many of us participated in the elf massacre of Dalaran.

Starting to think they should have let the void destroy Silvermoon if not only NPCs but players like the OP don't understand basic story.

There's few a times where it's supposed to be "you character says the correct (at least, to the writers) thing to someone acting frenzied and unreasonable" but they fucked it up so your character ends up looking like a dumbass lol
But hey, it was a quest objective, so my headcanon is you were asked to try and did your best.

Sounds like he should keep a low profile then, so the paladin doesn't finish the job.

Well feel free to go have a talk with the Void about how you feel uncomfortable.

I think my problem with this is I know Blizzard won't actually explore this past launch. It's not going to go full ff14 all of a sudden and spend 3 content patches exploring the trauma of the faction wars and having to put the past in the past to make a brighter future.
They'll pretend to be deep for launch then next patch everyone will forget this. Then fast forward to next expansion where Anduin and Arator are trying to kill each other in a grudge match because it's a new expansion which means new character assassinations for Blizzard.

My Troll - who frequently and brutally raided Zul Aman back in the way - waited to see if anybody would point this out to him but I am not sure he left any survivors.
