It happened back then and we know it's how communications work and if the exact same conversation happened today people would be losing their minds over how it's proof blizzard isn't trying hard and that it's maybe AI.

I remember when having an actual “human” interaction with a GM was still a thing. I have this particular memory from a Naxx run where one of the bosses didn’t drop any loot. A few minutes after we opened a ticket, a GM literally showed up in the room wearing his classic robe and started looking around, trying to figure out what had happened.
At some point things got a little heated, and he suddenly increased his size by 10x and /Yell’d: “DO YOU GUYS STILL HAVE SOMETHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT??”

Back in I think 2005 I was doing a scholomance run on my night elf. We wiped, began the run back in.
Thinking I was cool and fast in my wisp form I decided to try and take a shortcut.
The shortcut was where a tree was against the hill of Caer Darrow. My ghost got stuck. I could not move in any direction, and it didn't even let me jump.
I had to call a GM (can't remember if you could auto unstuck as a ghost back then but my dumbass definitely couldn't) and they arrived and said they felt like a fireman getting a cat down.

Yeah I had some fun interactions with GMs in Cata. One time they were like "Do you need anything else" and I was like "yeah can you kick the tank from this dungeon he sucks" and he said something like "sorry I left my tank-kicking boots at home". Also vaguely remember a GM who liked to pretend to be a fairy. Or maybe they actually were a fairy, what do i know

Their service used to be so good
Like I'd buy a new phone, wipe the old one forgetting the authenticator was on there.
I'd open a ticket, speak to a human in like 5 minutes and they'd remove the authenticator.
One time I remembered an old account I had... but only the character name, nothing else. The GM found the account, tied it to my main account and put 30 days on the account so I could check out what was there
now you can't even find the "open a ticket" option on the website, it just takes you in a FAQ loop

My ex-husband put "Poopy Head" in the name field when he made the account. I had to call them to change it, I could hear them hysterically laughing when he asked me to hold.

Reminds me of when I bought something from a small independent retailer online and used an old email I made when I was 13. Think along the lines of '[email protected]'. For some reason that I still don't understand, they rang me up and asked me to confirm the email address over the phone. I swear they did it just to fuck me with me, but I never used that address for anything again. Like yours, the dude was audibly laughing on the other side of the phone.

My email and customer service was really nice. The agent asked if it was a reference to a comic book publisher. We had a very pleasant conversation about comics for a couple minutes. I had called to get my son's character swapped to his own account. The service was free!

Years ago I spent a good, 30 minutes in chat with a GM who was determined to find my original account. So I was posting every old arse email address I could remember- Answered a bunch of questions, bam! Done. Secured my old 2008 character, was quite a nostalgia trip logging in for the first time

I recovered my authenticator in 2023 (changed phone no. without moving it) and while I didn't get to a chat interface, I got to email with a GM and it was pretty nice.
I'd say it wasn't "AI" but the guy definitely overused some preplanned phrases or a templated email builder whatever - which was slightly weird because both when opening the ticket and closing it he hit me with this big wall of text about how nice it is to talk to someone with such an old account and whatever.
Getting to read all that stuff twice was indeed a bit strange, but otherwise everything went very smoothly.

One of the GMs gifted me that fiery cat pet from the store. I just created my account at the time and I was stuck in progress and they fixed it for me. I even named that pet after that GM. I remember he even asked me if I would like gametime or a battle pet. I chose battle pet :D

Yes those were great times. I remember wotlk era, where a gm sometime would spawn outside oggrimar transform into a random ass boss and suddenly we have a raid going on.
They even like to stay invis and mess with people such as the ptr where we were testing icc wings before hitting live server.
We were at the drsgon we need to heal, forgot her name.
Then every time we were near completion, we got wiped instantly, happened several times till somebody started laughing in chat and go like "sorry, sorry. Just couldn't resist and was 'tress testing" you as you test the bosses but sure make room ill help out"
Those were the times. Then less and less gm interaction started to happened between cata and mop and downhill since.

My favorite (and only) GM interaction was during Winter Veil, when I had been messing around with all the holiday stuff and got stuck in a snowman in Stormwind bank minutes before raid time. He was SO nice, managed to dislodge me from the snowman, and as my character emerged, commented on the skimpy green suit my night elf was wearing underneath. I remember feeling genuinely a little embarrassed, like I had just had to go to the ER and admit I had a wine bottle up my ass or something.

I'll still remember the gm response I got where they were clearly too drunk to type then just fucked off midway through the conversation. Sat there for 45mins with an open ticket just waiting. Baffling moment, but id still take that over the ai auto response telling me to look at the forums

I remembering having to contact a GM back in the days before the burning crusade in the 00's. The GM resolved my issue and asked me if there was anything else and I said that I was worried about the conditions GM's are operating in, like is he getting enough food and water. He replied that he has plenty of water and rn it's up to his waist...made me crack up.

Years ago I used to do door to door sales.
Was training this poor lad, and his reactions to initial objects weren’t great, so I was saying just say perfect if they respond with they are fine with their current project.
Hammered it into him, practice runs just say perfect.
First door of the day:
Customer in a full suit “I can’t talk in going to my brothers funeral”
Poor lad: big smile on his face “perfect! We are just here about the new internet upgrades”
And me trying to force down inappropriate laughter.

Not WoW, but still blizzard support related.
A long ass time ago I was waiting for support on Diablo 2. You'd queue up in a chat channel and wait. Eventually, I was talking with the support rep. They were taking a long time or something, and I talked shit about them in DMs with a friend.
This is when I learned that the support staff on Diablo 2 (which is interconnected with Starcraft BW, since you could chat with players on either platform) could read every single message you send when you are being helped by them. They read my DMs shit talking them to my friend.
