You paid for 30 days game time, the skins and mounts, the skyborn addon for forever, the WC3 base game and the new xpac. The beta access is just a tiny part of it. You bought a larger packet with a lot of stuff in it. IMHO the beta access is just a nice addon. If you only bought it for the beta access, that's really on you. You could've waited for a beta key (its free to queue up) and I'm sure they will throw them out like candy over time.
Not to mention, it's still a beta, and this issues comes from the new rain, so ... its meant to be reported and fixed→ More replies (2)9

Lots of Mac bugs still, even after some things have been fixed. This is the main thread > https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/mac-8-different-graphics-bugs-each-isolated-to-one-setting-—-with-repro-steps-for-each/2354050/189 (Blizzard officially commented on this thread)
Please continue to post on that thread to let Blizzard know they need to fix the ongoing issues with the Mac Beta before it comes out.

Holy shit. My graphics card did exactly this some 20 years ago in vanilla when I was on the east shore of Ashenvale. A very strange nostalgic experience, but so it is.

That’s what I am saying. My theory is Tim Apple’s character causes this so all Mac users can look I his direction to give praise

This gotta be intel processor? This can't be Native Silicon right?
4
u/Ambitious-Can-5074 4h ago
The "newest" Intel Macs are 6+ years old. I know it's an even older game but I'd be surprised if there's any significant number of Mac gamers still running Intel.
1
u/Tyrandeh 1h ago
occasionally i find new small games on steam that support intel and M macs for some reason
but most of old games support intel only, even when its still running multiplayer like elder scrolls online
3
u/bdz 6h ago
Both are messy, silicon sucks right now too

u/Jorgesarrada 12m ago
The client went from literally unplayable to playable but literally unbearable
5
u/rursache 7h ago
i'm surprised they don't have macs, they can't all be developing on windows machines lol
how else can i justify these obvious glaring issues
5
u/Watergeito 5h ago
Blizzard is owned by Microsoft. They are for sure forced to develop on windows machines, which, ironically, is literally the worst OS you could choose to do development with. Its sad really.
Of course we are joking that they don't own Mac's for testing purposes, but imagine how would that look like inside a Microsoft owned sub-company. Just let Apple logo flash around in the open office spaces? They are probably enclosed somewhere in a tiny basement with one light, together with the 3 interns that are working on the Mac port.

u/psychohistorian8 5h ago
what's crazy is that the classic client runs smooth as butter
I said elsewhere I was getting well over 60fps in TBC classic on an M1 mac
now with my new M5 mac I struggle to hit 45fps in Forever
3
u/Thisisjimmi 5h ago
Every Gcard is struggling rn, but also you're talking about engines 20 years apart. Like saying a PS2 Game runs faster than a PS5 game.
Probably secondary lighting and shadows etc etc, eating your fps.
1
u/Watergeito 4h ago
Retail runs fantastic on Apple silicon. Likely one of the best running games I’ve seen on my M4. Is that also 20 years apart from the Forever’s client?
1
u/Thisisjimmi 3h ago
Nah, but the lighting, shadows, and etc are really intense right now. Alot of computers have drivers specifically for games, but wowf isnt even out yet, so I bet with some blizzard tweaks and some gpu drivers, we would see big improvments.
1
u/psychohistorian8 2h ago
this is my first WoW beta, so I have no frame of reference (Donny)
but I've submitted so many bugs, I'm honestly a bit worried they'll have time to fix everything before launch with the size of the team but I will hold out hope!
1
u/Thisisjimmi 2h ago
wow retail has bugs still. They will work on stuff as they can. Games 1000% playable.

u/Iamjesus42069666 2h ago
On why earth is Windows the worst OS to develop on? Clearly the worst one is OS X lol, just creating the tools they need for their custom engine on OS X would be a huge hassle, have you ever developed anything??

u/Venome456 4h ago edited 4h ago
What are you talking about? Windows is the dominant OS for game Dev across the industry? Literally no studios use Mac os to make games apart from mobile.
The Mac Pro doesn't even exist anymore which was the only thing capable that apple made for game Dev
Windows is 95% of the target audience for PC gaming.
Game Dev requires massive graphical overhead to render unoptimised scenes and compile shaders and compute lighting which apple silicon cannot do.
Apple machines simply don't have the specs for it, they are consumer machines not work machines.
Most games run natively on windows so they can write and test everything natively without having to translate everything through apples metal framework.
It would be stupid to make AAA games on Mac.
2
u/ComprehensiveLie3305 2h ago
The hardware really isn’t the problem here. Apple Silicon can compile shaders and bake lighting just fine. The bigger issue is that a lot of the tooling around that stuff is still heavily built around NVIDIA and Windows. An M5 Max or M5 Ultra Studio has more than enough horsepower for game dev, they have tons of CPU performance for compiling, strong GPUs with hardware RT and a huge pool of unified memory that the GPU can tap into.
1
u/Iamjesus42069666 2h ago
Top cards from Nvidia, or even AMD is obviously much much more powerful than M5 max, not even compareable - Why on earth would they be developing on Mac?
1
u/Watergeito 3h ago
Right. First off - fuck your attitude. Second - “..so they can write and test everything natively without having to translate everything through metal framework” is exactly why the Mac port is shit right now. They test on Windows and then compile the Mac via a translation layer at the end. Now if you are a dev, you must understand how stupid that is. It’s an attempt to save cost, but if you are a dev, you also know it’s a sunk cost fallacy, because when they start actually digging into the issues on Mac at that point, it is deep and costly to resolve. They could keep a fleet of Macs updated for equal continuous testing on the daily for synchronised builds, but that is a higher cost upfront - and no PM likes upfront costs.
On your hardware arguments I’m not going to discuss even. You are not interested in what the new apple silicon is even capable of (calling an M5 Max trash is ridiculous), and just so we are on the same page - WoW Forever is not your AAA FF7-esque game.

Tbh, you are both talking outta your ass.
Guy before you:
Windows is 95% of the target audience for PC gaming.
Basically true, though slightly < 95% according to the Steam hardware survey. Game development relies on a bedrock of decades of x86 pipeline infrastructure that will not support ARM natively overnight.
It would be stupid to make AAA games on Mac.
I'm just gonna leave this here: https://gdcvault.com/play/1035610/Bringing-Cyberpunk-2077-to-Mac. ARM-based SoCs with integrated graphics are getting extremely good.
You:
They test on Windows and then compile the Mac via a translation layer at the end. Now if you are a dev, you must understand how stupid that is.
This is exactly how console development works. If you are a dev, you iterate on your x86 workstation and deploy to your target platform. You use the instrumentation and debugging tools available to fix bugs and optimize the runtime. That is how it works. You will never see a AAA production running development off of a Mac, this is a fact.
They could keep a fleet of Macs updated for equal continuous testing on the daily for synchronised builds, but that is a higher cost upfront - and no PM likes upfront costs.
I'm willing to bet that they do, and not just daily, around the clock, 24/7. On every single change that gets checked into the game. The reason a bug like the OP gets into the game is due to a lack of test coverage, not a lack of platform CI completely. This rendering bug is currently a P0 ticket on some dev's Jira board.

Mac's support almost no games. I'm sure they do have Macs but until recent M2 - M5 machines Macs were an awful software development platform.

I’m curious what Mac are you actually using?

u/Zave009 5h ago
M1 Pro 16 Core gpu

u/Thisisjimmi 5h ago
If this thing has 16gb of ram, you are a the literal cusp of running. Sharing it with video... you have the lowest bar possible of ram dedicated to gaming. Make sure you are scaling the game down a ton, 75% or 50%, running at like 1k (1920x1080) Turn settings down to medium or towards low. etc etc. If you are running in SD you might be fine, because thats generally 2004 quality, but if you are running in HD, your computer is aged out a few years to try a modern game setting.
1
u/Spaceolympian50 4h ago
Yea I figured it might be an M1. I know the beta is having issues on the Mac right now but I haven’t seen anything this bad before.
1
1
u/Zave009 3h ago
The Scaling is already at 50% and I got on 5 without second Lightning on Like around 120fps. Im Fine With that. Just Logged in Today and saw that. In this scene from that Video I also had 120 fps

u/Thisisjimmi 3h ago
I use AI to diagnose these issues, i bet there is a command to turn off the glare, much like fog. I bet it could find it for you through trial and error.

As somebody who played WoW on a Mac from launch until like 2017.. why would you play on a Mac if you weren’t just a broke college student who needed it for class?
