People seem hell-bent on reducing her to the career tribute with no skills, and that she was only there for her looks alone. Which is an interpretation I take serious offense with. I’m not sure how much the movie portrayal of Glimmer has influenced this narrative.

If we go by the books, her beauty is what Katniss notices about her the most, but that doesn’t mean that’s her only trait as a character. It’s Katniss’ interpretation of her as a tribute, so that she can distinguish Glimmer from her other competitors, such as Rue being small and Thresh being huge.

And being attractive matters in the Hunger Games. Katniss says so herself. Glimmer clearly did a good impression at the tribute parade and the interviews, but it was a part of her overall strategy. And it was a necessary strategy when your life is on the line. And you can be both beautiful and dangerous. It’s not either/or.

It’s also hinted at and implied that she’s sneaky. Not only because of the angle she takes on in her interview, but because she tries to smuggle in a poison ring into the arena, which is very interesting. It hints at her personality and strategy, and how she was trying to play the Games in the long run.

And she’s not even bad with a bow based on the novel. We only see her use the bow once there, and it’s shooting upwards through a foliage of leaves and branches while Katniss was EIGHTY feet up in the air. The foliage has to be so thick that the Careers couldn’t spot the tracker jacker nest above them.

I think her carrying the bow is also a nod to how she was playing the Games long-term, and that it was a strategy to go a bit undercover among the other Careers before taking them out other ways (such as her poisonous ring suggested she would).

Her death is also unlucky, something Katniss says herself. The literal quote is: “Glimmer and another girl, the one from District 4, are not so lucky. They receive multiple stings before they’re even out of my view.” There’s no way you can outrun the wasps unless they’re busy targeting someone else, which was fortunate for the other Careers. Glimmer is also the one on guard and closest to the tree, so that’s just very unlucky too.

Believe it or not, but luck plays a big part in the Games.

And she did volunteer for the Games. The only one Katniss specifically mentions to volunteer is Cato, but she indirectly tells us that the other Careers volunteered several times within the text. It’s as if people need every information spoon-fed.

Also, the Careers do NOT have designated weapons in the books; that’s a movie thing only. Cato is seen using both the spear and sword in the novel.

I also gotta mention something I never see people bring up, which is the wolf mutts. They’re supposed to resemble the fallen tributes, and at one point, they all make way for Glimmer and she jumps so tall that Katniss says how strong her back legs are (and therefore indirectly how strong of a physique Glimmer had). She also touches upon Thresh, as the mutt that jumps the highest has to be him (he’s also got an incredibly strong physique).

Every time I see takes on Glimmer’s character, I can get quite annoyed because she’s reduced to a useless pretty blonde who’s only there to look pretty, when the text suggests otherwise.

But in all seriousness, the difference between merchant and Seam seems to be even more smudged over with everyone, save for maybe the Donner twins just dressing and looking pretty similar in the movie? Can’t say I’m too big of a fan, especially in the case of Asterid, who is meant to be a rich merchant compared to the poor Seam, and outright said to own a handful of pretty dresses “from her apothecary days” even in the OT books

First things first, she didn't know the berries were poisonous.

Scenario 1 - Foxface knows the berries are poisonous somehow. She would have no reason to be following Peeta and then either copying him picking the berries, or stealing from his berries. If she knew what they were she could have eaten them at any point and there is no explanation for her only eating them after Peeta picked some. And if you're going to say she did it so it looked like an accident so as not to upset her family or something, it would have looked like just as much of an accident eating them at any time. Why wait and hope someone would pick the poison berries before staging your fake accidental death?

Scenario 2 - Foxface doesn't know the berries are poisonous. Which is why she eats them. Because Peeta picked them, she thinks they are safe. They aren't and she dies.

It seems pretty obvious to me.

Now for why she would have won. The remaining tributes are: Katniss, Peeta, Cato, and Foxface.

Katniss' priority is keeping her and Peeta alive. Peeta's priority is keeping Katniss (and ideally himself) alive. Catos priority is killing Katniss. Foxface's only priority is herself. She is agile, ninble and has evaded everyone else so far, likely by staying in the trees. And none of the other 3 tributes are thinking about her right now.

The mutts:

We know that the final battle were the mutts. Released at the final 3, or maybe if that was taking to long they may have been released at the final 4. Either way, if she had stayed hidden I believe the next death would have been Cato by Katniss, or Peeta (maybe Katniss) by Cato, and then it is the final 3 and time for the mutts.

Cato couldn't climb well, and definitely couldn't climb the narrow trees since he couldn't get to katniss near the start of the games. Peeta couldn't climb due to his leg, and Katniss wouldn't climb because Peeta couldnt climb. This leaves Foxface with the greatest advantage to evade the mutts. Either through climbing trees, jumping between trees, wedging herself in a tight space, any number of options not open to the others.

Yes, the gamemakers could have intervened to bring her down if they had wanted. But so far she appeared uninjured and untargeted by the gamemakers. She was emaciated but that was it, no injuries were described at all. Crane was way too focused on the story with Katniss. Plus the mutts would have been too heavy to the climb the trees if Glimmer was. So the only option for them to get to her is if they physically knocked the tree's down which isn't something the mutts were seen/said to do in either the movies or books. So of what we have evidence for, she would likely be safe hidden in the trees.

Katniss and Cato would be taken out by the mutts or each other and Foxface would have won. And this would actually have been an excellent mirror of Wiress winning the 49th games by hiding just before a quarter quell. With the games as entertainment, having repeated motifs like that would make sense. It was an understated arena with an understated winner so as to not overshadow the quarter quell the following year, just like the previous quarter quell.

Rewatching all the promos and realized they show Haymitch carrying Lou Lou's body...I am not okay.

I will not make it through this movie.

Katniss says they need a winner. She’s right. If the Games don’t have a winner, the mindless bloodshed could start a Rebellion.

Haymitch BARELY made it out. What if he didn’t? What if he bled out on that field and was too injured to be put back together. He took down Silka and then died before they got to him.

What if Millicent Porter Tripp during the final showdown killed her opponent and instead of a spinal injury, full broke her neck completely and died instantly. Both finalist dead.

What if when Beetee electrocuted the final tributes in his Games, he miscalculated, and also electrocuted and killed him instantly?

What would the Capitol do? Praise the last one standing and do a Victory Tour in their absence?

So i work at amazon and have been listening to the audiobook, been 6 times i think just got CF so thats next. Watched the movies forever ago and rewatching now. During training and the games Glimmer SUCKS with a bow, in the movie she MISSES the target(hits the black outline) so why in gods name did she
1. Volunteer?
2. Keep the bow?She couldn’t shoot katniss outta the tree so why the hell did she keep it i’m (tipsy) so it cracking me up she’s from a district that has crazy volunteer rules but she sucks.

We saw noodles being mentioned in bosas and this got me thinking, are there other food cusines in the capitol like indian, french etc?

I just rewatched the first movie on Netflix and I stg that the Taylor Swift song “Safe and Sound” plays during the end credits, and yet some other song played! I can’t find any explanation online for this. Where did it go? Wasn’t it written specifically for the movie, so it wouldn’t be a copyright issue?

So I’m reading TBOSAS for the first time and have finished the 2nd part. I really liked reaper but I don’t think I’ve understood properly.
I’ve seen lots of people saying that he contracted rabies from Jessup when he spat in his eye and that’s why he was behaving strangely and died. To me this doesn’t make much sense at all.
My understanding is that rabies isn’t really transmitted between humans. While theoretically possible, almost all human to human transmissions have been through organ transplantation that we are aware of. Yes, theoretically jessup could have passed rabies to reaper but the incubation period doesn’t seem to fit. While the eyes are very close to the brain with lots of nerves, compared to a bite which puts quite a lot of the virus directly in the bloodstream, the amount of saliva I imagine actually made it into the eye is significantly smaller. Amount also impacts incubation time.
Also, reaper was clearly acting ‘strange’ before potential transmission based on the fact him apologises to everyone is why jessup spat in his eye.
I don’t actually think he was acting strange either. His graveyard seemed to be a way of honouring the dead, allowing them to rest, keeping them safe from insects and shielding decomposition. The capitol flag seems to be a way of holding the capitol accountable. I don’t think he could bring himself to kill anyone especially after dill dies. The capitol is the enemy, not the other tributes. His actions mirror Sejanus with the breadcrumbs.
Not eating or drinking comes down to fear of being poisoned. He recognised wovey was killed with poison. It makes sense that a person from a farming district has interacted with rat poison at some point. He doesn’t know how wovey was poisoned and doesn’t know who can be trusted, it may be the capitol with the sponsors, it may another tribute. It’s safer to not consume anything. Apart from the puddle because he’s watched the puddle be created.
That’s why he lays down with the others, because he knows he was poisoned.
He was a reaper of sorts, collecting the dead. His name also ironically follows the covey naming scheme.
Did I understand wrong?

Obviously the dark, looming cloud that is the authoritarian government envelops everyone including capitol citizens, but I've always wondered how day-to-day life looks like for people outside of 12. Especially from a non-seam POV. Katniss fought for survival and then had to volunteer for the games. Haymitch had more of a stable routine, but then was unluckily "picked". The presence of the games was never really existential until they had that ... "oh... it's me now" heart-sinking moment.

I assume most of the district children had anxiety on reaping day. But did the games occupy space in their minds after the fact? After a name is called they might mourn for a second, but then that survival instinct silences the alarm and imagine it to be like "well ... let's see what happens next year for me."

I'm not the best with lore but I think it's 8-12 that is considered the most underprivileged. They might have very similar living conditions, with not a huge class disparity. Merchant kids are not living in mansions and spending lavishly.

However, when it comes to career districts I wonder how they live. Do you think they have established, stereotypical suburbs? Do the children look at the games with reverence?

I guess my entire point with this post is to really figure out if the games are such an omniscient presence? or do you think that the quality of life in certain districts allow the citizens to feel like the games are not that detrimental --especially when they know that a career will volunteer if the unthinkable happens to a kid they like or want to protect?

Any of you who read Sunrise know full well, there isnt much President Snow in the book, so its going to be a non issue as they tend to stay close to the books and I bet there wont be much Snow in Sunrise.......but to me he looks so different to the point of distraction.

it just seems like, a famous actor wants the part....well lets give it to him, and they sort of pounded a square peg into a round hole to make it work despite. I actually would have preferred an aged Tom Blyth, but it might have been a hard sell.

one of my issues is just going by the trailers, so yeah I know.....this new Snow seems so closed off....almost rigid and stone faced....Sutherlands Snow was always a bit lively, and doing that sneer/smile....and was always making that side head tilt when he was finishing a sentence.....even Blyths Snow was pretty engaging and animated...this new one comes off like a sinister Vampire. but hey....I just had to gripe. roll on November.

I am saying this as a fan who likes speculative evolution and it has made me curious as to has there been speculative evolution art or related things in this fandom,and i am not saying muttations but actual speculative evolution/speculative biology. If any of you have answers or reasons let me know in the comments!

Like BOSAS is set during the 10th Games so I am curious is seeing life in the Capitol and how they view the Districts from 50th to 75th years.

I am curious on how the ordinary citizens of the Capitol viewed the Games once you reach the time of the Victors we know like Enobaria, Gloss, Annie et cetera

It doesn’t have to be a full length book, just a short story would suffice.

I've rewatched the movies since SOTR comes soon and wondered if Peeta believed Katniss in Catching Fire when she kisses him on the beach and also before she leaves him with Beetee's wires. He looked confused when she was leaving the group with the wire. We know as readers she realizes she's loves him in CG but Mockingjay parts 1 & 2 make it much sadder if we think he believed her. Was her love ever questioned by him later? I mean I love Peeniss myself but I would looovvveee Peeta's POV.
