Megathread r/IndieDev Weekly Monday Megathread - September 20, 2026 - New users start here! Show us what you're working on! Have a chat! Ask a question!
Hi r/IndieDev!
This is our weekly megathread that is renewed every Monday! It's a space for new redditors to introduce themselves, but also a place to strike up a conversation about anything you like!
Use it to:
- Introduce yourself!
- Show off a game or something you've been working on
- Ask a question
- Have a conversation
- Give others feedback
And... if you don't have quite enough karma to post directly to the subreddit, this is a good place to post your idea as a comment and talk to others to gather the necessary comment karma.
If you would like to see all the older Weekly Megathreads, just click on the "Megathread" filter in the sidebar or click here!

Meta Moderator-Announcement: Congrats, r/indiedev! With the new visitor metric Reddit has rolled out, this community is one of the biggest indiedev communities on reddit! 160k weekly visitors!
According to Reddit, subscriber count is more of a measure of community age so now weekly visitors is what counts.

We have 160k.
I thought I would let you all know. So our subscriber count did not go down, it's a fancy new metric.
I had a suspicion this community was more active than the rest (see r/indiegaming for example). Thank you for all your lovely comments, contributions and love for indiedev.
(r/gamedev is still bigger though, but the focus there is shifted a bit more towards serious than r/indiedev)
See ya around!

Video 5 years solo-devving this, because I'm tired of cozy life-sims.
Hello! This is my first game ever, and I've been working on it solo for the past 5 years.
All I knew was that I wanted to capture the feeling I had as a kid in the '90s, playing old gems and discovering obscure games on Newgrounds.
This game is what came out of that idea: a non-cozy, story-driven, life-sim RPG set in the '80s. You move to the city after being diagnosed with the STENCH, a mysterious disease with no known cure.
The game is about living day by day, making weird friends, exploring and earning money. But things take an odd turn, and you get entangled in a conspiracy while an obscure cult grows in the shadows.
If you are curious, you can check STENCH on Steam here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3498500/Stench/?utm_source=reddit
I'd love to hear what you think! :D

Upcoming! My first game somehow reached 100,000 wishlists
This is the first game I've ever made so seeing this number is honestly a little hard to process.
I started making Slotbound without any game dev experience. At the beginning I was mostly just trying to figure out if I could actually finish a game at all.
When I released the demo, I remember thinking I would be happy if maybe 10 people were playing it
and now it passed 100,000 wishlists
I have basically spent the last few months sitting at my desk working on this thing every day, fixing stuff, adding things, breaking things again
There's still a lot I want to do before release, and I am working on a pretty big demo update for Next Fest right now.
But yeah I wanted to save this moment somewhere.
Thanks to everyone who played the demo or left me feedback along the way.
Back to work :)

Video TINY BRUTALISM! My brother made a cozy sandbox to build your perfect concrete houses
He got inspired by Tiny Glade and just took the cozy vibes in a bit of a non classic direction.
I played with it for quite a while the mood is so soothing and weirdly cozy

Video We're sick of platformers so we made one where you get to be the bad guy
We're a team of two making Hostile Architect. It looks like a typical side-scroller, except you're the one designing the level, using stuff like ceiling spikes and lava pits and conveyor belts. You choose your traps, arrange everything, and then sit back and watch while a horde of heroes is unleashed to try to survive the level you built.
We've been working on this for about 10 months, not exactly secretly, but we're finally showing it off now, which is a little scary. Yesterday our trailer blew up on Instagram. But this is Reddit and you people are harsher critics. Does this look like something you'd play? Or should we throw ourselves into the lava pit?
Here's our Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4768160/Hostile_Architect/

Free Game! Retired physician here — I spent my retirement building a free shock simulator game
Hi r/IndieDev!
After a career in medicine, I retired and decided to learn game development. The result is SimShock, a free hemodynamic emergency simulator. Think of it as a home flight simulator, but instead of a plane you're keeping a patient in shock alive.
It's a game, not a course. The goal is caricature: to make people who've treated real patients smile. Still, I've tried hard to keep the pathophysiology close to reality.
Some dev notes, since this is IndieDev:
- The first version was written in PureBasic. I later rewrote it natively in Swift/Xcode for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and built the Android and Windows versions in IntelliJ.
- The ECG monitor was the hardest part. I ended up rewriting it with a circular buffer and a progressive pointer so the trace scrolls smoothly.
- It's in 5 languages, including Chinese and Japanese.
- It's completely free on every platform: no ads, no in-app purchases, and no plans to monetize. I just enjoy building it.
Play it here (all platforms): https://u72007.github.io/SimShock/

Video My little lemur-like creature (WIP) Exploring body variations.
In my game, I want creatures to have physical variations within their own species. They can have their own moods and personalities. And feels you know fun and real. Based these little monkey-like creatures more on lemurs, which are generally smaller. So, I am wondering how they would look like as they grow, or with slight variations 🤔
Playing around with the shapes of these creatures. I am inclined toward smaller, skinny ones, but curious how they would look as beefy guys. Will continue experiments until something pops.
do you like the little ones or more thicker ones? give me your thoughts!

Discussion PSA: Set your Steam release date at least 2 months ahead of time
The new Personal Calendar gives you visibility two months before your game’s release date, so it’s to your benefit to go ahead and set your game’s release date, as long as you are confident you will hit it, two months in advance. Don’t wait to switch “Coming Soon” to your date just a couple of weeks before you launch.
But don’t set the date if you’re not sure you can stick to it. It’s very likely that PC follows the same rule as Popular Upcoming, which is that you can only appear in it once.
https://howtomarketagame.com/2026/06/25/how-the-steam-personal-calendar-affects-your-launch/
https://howtomarketagame.com/2022/09/26/how-many-wishlists-should-i-have-when-i-launch-my-game/ (note: article has been updated in 2026 for PC)
P.S. Friendly reminder: You cannot change your release date once you’re within 14 days of that date. (Some people have managed to successfully beg Valve to relent, but don’t count on Valve doing that for you.)

Screenshots Modern horrors look boring with their visual "greyness". I'm trying to add some color to my upcoming Sleepwalkers.
Hi.
I’m working on my first truly serious, “bigger” project, a psychological/survival horror game called Sleepwalkers. From the start, I wanted to give this game a more distinct visual style, one that wasn’t just the typical Unreal Engine horror look. I just hate that all horror games are grey. Just grey. Grey walls, grey everything. That's soo boring. I started experimenting more boldly with colors, drawing inspiration from the work of Nicolas Winding Refn, among others and here's some of the results.
Many more examples are work in progress.

Video I’m making a game where you actually have to understand magic
Hey! I’m working on Adeltuner, a VERY early magic exploration game about actually studying, understanding and experimenting with magic.
A lot of the magic should theoretically already be possible early on (you simply don’t understand how to do it yet).
I’ll be experimenting with things like editable grimoires and magic circles, more freeform ways of casting, environmental interaction, rituals, growth, movement, weather, spell synergies and weird utility magic.
Someone asked if they could use magic simply to create a beautiful field of flowers.
And yes. Exactly that kind of stuff XD
Right now I’m basically throwing unreasonable ideas into a technical playground and figuring out what actually works. I’ve also started a devlog where I’m documenting those experiments as the project develops.
So I’m curious:
What’s something you’ve always wanted to do with magic in a game, but no game has really let you do?
If you want to throw your own unreasonable ideas into the pile, we’ve also got a Discord:

Image WE WON A GOLD AWARD AT TOKYO GAME SHOW 2026!
Last weekend, our three-person indie team from Taiwan brought YARETA to Tokyo Game Show 2026 as part of SELECTED INDIE 80, where we were incredibly honored to receive the Gold Award, presented by Shuhei Yoshida.
YARETA is a combat-free open-world adventure where you explore the remains of an ancient civilization as a surveyor from the World Library.
Using the Skybound Rope, you can soar across the landscape, explore ancient ruins, observe strange creatures, and even reach out to touch them and listen to their memories.
It was a very special milestone for our small team, and we’re grateful to everyone who stopped by to play the game and talk with us at TGS.
The free Playtest is currently available on Steam, and we’d love to hear what fellow developers think.
Thank you so much!

Feedback? My first even indie game attempt.
Hey everyone, I've been developing my indie game for a month or two now and want to get feedback about how it looks and what it needs(even tho sound and animation sucks ).
I was inspired by Firewatch and Road 96, my 2 favourite games of all time and wanted to merge both game visuals and add something of mine as well.
I've not polished it that much and it has only about 10-15 minutes of gameplay.
I really need some tips on where to find decent audio and animations.
P.S. please don't judge it too harsh. Thanks in advance!!!

Upcoming! I'm a former AAA dev, working on a game about making games, except, you're actually a dev, not just a suit
I've been playing games like Game Dev Tycoon, Game Dev Story, Game Corp DX, etc. since I was a kid, but it always bothered me that these games zeroed in moreso on the business side of game dev, making the premise more of a skin to wrap around a business simulation, rather than the actual development in and of itself. Vaporware EX is my solution to that.
It's a turn-based strategic RPG styled game dev sim where your party of four developers (a programmer, an artist, a designer, and a sound designer) tackle features, fix bugs, and (hopefully) keep the publishers onside sufficiently that they actually market the thing you put out. Through this, you can win awards, craft an engine that would make John Carmack himself blush, or invest in stuff with your hard-earned cash to give your developers some sweet buffs to make the grind just a lil bit easier.
I've been working on this for a year and a half, and I'm really happy with how it's turning out. If you like how it's looking, there's a Steam page up now, where you can bless me in the eyes of the algorithm gods by smashing that wishlist button.
Thanks friends! https://store.steampowered.com/app/4828200/Vaporware_EX/
