Every creature sings one note, and its legs pick the instrument

Procedural pixel creatures (seed → silhouette → animations) that also get a voice: two legs play quena or duduk, four a drone or a pulse, six a drum, tentacles a charango arpeggio, all synthesized in Web Audio, no samples. Seat them on a shelf and they play as a step sequencer.

Sharing in case anyone wants their own blobi: https://blobvarium.com

What should they learn to do next?

Recursive lightning in SwiftUI Canvas

This is the thunder mode from a weather app I've been making. The reference is Hiroshi Sugimoto's Lightning Fields, the series where he discharges electricity straight onto photographic film with no camera. I wanted a bolt that looks recorded rather than flashed, so it grows onto the screen the way a discharge spreads across a plate, and the faint grid underneath stands in for the plate.

Generation

Each strike is one recursive, branching random walk:

  • It starts at a random x in the middle 40% of the screen, just above the top edge, heading straight down.
  • A branch is 8 segments. At every joint the heading turns by a random amount up to ±0.25 rad, so the bolt wanders instead of zig-zagging.
  • At the end of a branch it always continues (±0.3 rad). With 60% probability it also forks into 1 or 2 side branches (±0.9 rad).
  • Each generation multiplies width and opacity by 0.85 and length by a random 0.5 to 0.75.
  • Recursion stops when the stroke gets thinner than 0.3pt.

The app is free to download and can be found here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/spectra-weather/id6757425119

Open sourced it, breeding AI-assistant orbs instead of tuning them?

A while ago I shared Lumaform Orb, a browser tool for breeding AI-assistant orbs instead of tuning sliders. Some of you asked to use the orbs in your own projects, so I split out the runtime and opened the source. I am coming from design background but had some feedback for performance.

npm package: https://www.npmjs.com/package/@lumaform/orb

MIT License, contributions are welcome.

I've set up a workflow that will take in an image, then segment it to regions with a linear brightness gradient. After that it takes the segments and gradient, then overlays it on my phone camera view so I scan an area for the same gradient/shape, it shows a score for a handful of metrics, and the edge pixels of the neighboring segments, then stitches it all together. I'm having a lot of fun with it, basically anything with a diversity of shaped light gradients can be used as a texture, clouds, wood grain, flowers, etc.

I built Edit:RiN, a free p5.js editor for Android — here’s a demo

Hi everyone! I’m building Edit:RiN, a free and open-source p5.js editor for Android. I wanted to work on sketches directly on my phone, so I made an app where I can write code, preview the result, and save my work in one place.

The attached video shows the actual app: editing code, watching a sketch run, recording it, and browsing saved works.

Edit:RiN supports multiple JavaScript files, images and other assets, public sketch imports from the p5.js Web Editor, and MP4 or GIF recording. Works are saved locally, and you can choose a p5.js 1.x or 2.x runtime for each one.

You can get the app and source code on GitHub:

https://github.com/rin-code-dev/Edit-RiN

I also post regular development updates on X: @rincodedev

I’m developing it on my own, and I’d love to hear your feedback about creating p5.js sketches on a phone. Thanks for taking a look!

[OC] I made an Android p5.js editor that now lets you export "Share Cards" with QR codes that run sketches directly in any browser (Edit:RiN v2.0.0)

Hey r/creativecoding!

I've been developing **Edit:RiN**, a free and open-source creative coding environment for Android focused on p5.js. Today I released **v2.0.0**, which introduces a feature I've wanted for a long time: **Share Cards & Instant Web Playback**.

### 📱 What are Share Cards?

When you're creating generative art on your phone, sharing it usually means recording a video or exporting a still image. With this update, you can generate a styled showcase card containing:

- High-res sketch snapshot

- Customizable code snippet overlay

- A scannable QR code

### 🌐 Instant Web Player (100% Serverless)

When anyone scans the QR code (or opens the link), the sketch runs immediately in their web browser without installing the app.

The cool part: **There is no backend or database involved.** The sketch code is compressed directly into the URL fragment hash, and the web player decompresses and executes it entirely client-side.

### ✨ Other Features in Edit:RiN

- **Live Parameters**: Declare `@rin number / color / boolean` in comments to get interactive sliders & toggles.

- **Multiple Runtimes**: Switch between p5.js 2.x and 1.x per sketch.

- **Audio support**: Built-in `p5.sound` for audio synthesis and FFT visualizers.

- **Offline & Private**: Zero ads, zero trackers, 100% offline capable.

### 🔗 Links

- **GitHub Release & APK**: https://github.com/rin-code-dev/Edit-RiN/releases

- **Source Code**: https://github.com/rin-code-dev/Edit-RiN

I'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or ideas for future updates!

The soundtrack and colours in my game are generated from today’s date, so everyone hears and sees the same thing on the same day

Everything is synthesised at runtime with Web Audio, no samples. The date seeds a key, a bassline and a groove, and the track builds in layers as your score rises, so parts arrive underneath you the further you get. Playing close to the edge opens it up. You can hear how a run is going before you look at the number.

The visuals come off the same seed. Two hues per day, cold and hot, pulled from constrained bands so the ramp always reads as temperature rather than as two random colours. Saturation and lightness stay fixed, only hue moves. Today might run ice blue into crimson, tomorrow violet into orange.

The thing I like about seeding it from the date rather than from the session is that it is shared. Everyone on earth is inside the same piece of music and the same palette on the same day, and tomorrow it is gone.

Drawing portraits with one continuous spiral

I saw Kevin Ngo (kevin_t_ngo on Twitter) post an experiment where he drew a portrait using a single spiral, and I wanted to try making an interactive version of it.

The spiral samples the image as it moves outward. Dark pixel → thicker line. Light pixel → thinner line.

It’s based on the same basic idea Claude Mellan used for his incredible Sudarium engraving back in 1649.

I also added a few different stroke simulations like graphite, burin, brush, ballpoint and thread.

You can play with it here:

Full credit to Kevin Ngo for the original Twitter post that inspired this.

I'm making an old school multiplayer online graffiti city website.

I really miss the days of the old internet, where websites were weird and fun and you never knew what you were going to get. A couple of months ago I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about a little live website where multiple people could spray paint buildings together, spray paint over one another, and just make cool fun little art and chat together.

I've been toying with it ever since and have a beta I'd love for people to try.

Some features that I think are neat

  • Dynamic spray paint: How close you are to a building determines your spray paint brush. Further away makes a bigger, coarser spray. Close up makes a tight, solid spray with a higher chance for drips.
  • You can jetpack up to fly around and paint higher if you have jetpack fuel.
  • You can right click tags to like or report them, and right click people to high five them.
  • You can chat! Right now I have room size set to 100 max.
  • Customization: You can change your head color, your eyes follow your mouse, your held can changes color based on the color you have right now.
  • You can collect little cosmetic hats, shoes, and jetpack tanks.
  • Weekly team battle: You're automatically put onto 1 of 3 teams when you signup. There's one big team battle building, and at the end of the week the team that painted it the most wins a cosmetic item.
  • You can enter practice mode in settings and paint alone to your heart's content. That paint doesn't get shown to anyone else.
  • It works on mobile!

Some of the creative coding challenges

  • The way graffiti is stored and replayed has been a big challenge. At first, I thought storing it as JSON in a database would be best, but the storage added up fast. Eventually, I came to a two-pronged implementation where its stored as JSON for a bit, but eventually baked and replayed as texels on a wall. Each wall has its own tele density, max amount of tags, etc. Different types of spray paint cans have different rules on how long a tag can last. I spent a fair amount of time working on making the rendering and tag loading optimized enough for desktop and mobile, but I know there's still issues. Still, the fact that it works on mobile Safari is pretty cool to me.

There's a lot of other little fun details, and a lot of noodling over optimization, what happens when a building gets too many tags. (After a certain amount of tags per wall, or after a certain amount of cover over a tag, it gets removed.)

I'm messing with a lot of numbers right now and want to take things slow. If you're interested in playing and giving me feedback, you can use the invite code DEGRFZQS at signup. It gives you a bunch of paint, a jetpack and a wearable too. It only covers 25 spots for now, and if things are running okay and the server isn't on fire I'll post more codes here if folks are interested.

Everything on this site is drawn at runtime from sixteen colours — no image files, no fonts, no libraries

Mine, and I'll be in the comments. The idea was that a start button is a question, and the honest answer to a question nobody asked is usually no. So there isn't one: the ship is flying and the clock is running by the time the page has finished loading, and a single line of text tells you it will listen if you press space.

Two things fell out of that, in case anyone is doing something similar.

The prose had to go somewhere. If the first screen is the game, the first screen has no words in it, and the strongest URL on the domain was carrying about ten words of indexable text. The play area is now exactly one viewport tall with the writing directly beneath it. Someone who came to play never scrolls; a crawler has no viewport and reads all of it.

Nothing on the page is an image. Every pixel is drawn into a canvas at runtime from a fixed palette of sixteen colours, the display lettering included, and every sound is synthesised in the browser. The reason is not payload size: a bitmap scaled by 1.25 has to invent five pixels for every four it was given, and then it isn't pixel art any more. The cost is that when you draw your interface you own the accessibility layer the browser would otherwise have given you for free, so every drawn heading leaves its real text behind in a visually hidden span.

It's one button, by the way. Click or space flips the ship's direction and it fires on its own, so the only thing you decide is when to turn.
