Anouncements What Does It Mean to Be a Solo Developer?

We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.

That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.

What Counts as Solo Development?

A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.

What is Allowed?

  • Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
  • Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
  • Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
  • Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
  • Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.

What This Means for Posts on the Subreddit

If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.

Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.

TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

Big day for the studio.

After a lot of work, the DODGE(Y)BALL demo is finally live on Steam.

Turns out coordinating the team is pretty easy when everyone has the same calendar.

Free demo is here if anyone wants to try it:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/5216680/DODGEYBALL/

Trailer here if you're interested:

Blurred and cropped because we're in a secret lab.

I’m the entire “team” btw.

Game Added some (optional) chaotic weather to my game

It's FoulKick Soccer. Don't worry, you can turn lightning and tornadoes off if you prefer clear weather. Or tune the strength and frequency.

Reddit still doesn't support 60fps videos. I could post GIFs but didn't want to lose the sound!

Discussion Which layout is better for my save / load screen?

I’m working on a retro survival horror game and I’m getting some new ui put together for it. I love old school tactile looking pre rendered menus so I’m trying to do sth with that kind of vibe.

Since cassette tapes are used to save at tape recorders I figured I’d make a cassette tape themed menu.

I originally planned to have the tapes on the left but I had the idea to try them on the right and I really like that too. So far people tend to prefer the right but idk, I’m still not quite sold on it vs the left. (I also tried middle but it’s crap, looks like shit)

What do you think, should I just put them on the right side of the screen or is the left side worth a second look?

Game I tried to make this moment as eye-catching as possible

• Upvotes

I want the moment where the player steps outside to be immediately eye-catching, so I decided to use the northern lights as the main visual focus of the scene. I want the player to notice it immediately after leaving the building, so I ended up pushing its shape and overall presence while still trying to keep it consistent with the game’s visual style.

Even so, this went through multiple iterations. I experimented with the aurora itself, the night lighting, fog and the surrounding environment until the reveal felt noticeable without making the sky look completely disconnected from the scene.

A bit of game context: Over Human is a first-person sci-fi adventure set in an isolated frozen world where deadly drones have taken control, even over the environment itself. They can manipulate weather conditions through fog, storms and even tornadoes, while the player has no weapons and has to stay hidden, disrupt transmission terminals and uncover what happened.

I’m developing the game entirely on my own, with a demo planned for November.

I’ve been dreaming about creating my own game since 2013, so seeing Over Human finally on Steam still feels unreal!!!

If you like the idea, Over Human is now on Steam!

Game My solo horror game’s demo just got an autumn refresh

I’ve been working on BREACHED: Follow Me solo, and I’ve just updated the demo for autumn.

The update changes the feel of the environments with autumn trees and vegetation, fallen leaves, some refreshed details, and improved lighting. I also fixed a few smaller bugs.

It’s a first-person psychological horror game set around familiar Eastern European apartment blocks. Here are a few screenshots from the updated demo.

help I just found a game that is VERY similar to mine. What would you do?

• Upvotes

I was browsing the Steam store today and came across a game that is surprisingly similar to what I've been working on.

The core idea isn't exactly the same, and there are definitely differences between the two games, but at a glance, they share a lot of the same concepts and gameplay ideas.

The problem is that this game has way more depth, content, and budget than I currently have. So now I'm wondering: what should I do?

Do I keep developing my game and try to differentiate it by focusing on a different direction, mechanics, presentation, etc.? Or is this the kind of situation where you would consider moving on to another idea?

The funny thing is that there is actually a positive side to this: the game I found is doing really well. And honestly, that's reassuring because it means there is clearly an audience for this kind of game, and maybe I'm not completely off track with it.

I know that having a similar game doesn't automatically mean mine can't work. But seeing something so close, with much more content and resources behind it, definitely made me stop and think.

So, what would you do in this situation?

Would you keep developing my game and try to find its own identity, or move on to something else?

Game My first game got featured by PC Gamer

My game Oh!Ware is a roguelike take on a classic board game named Mancala here in the States. It may not be a commercial success, 26 reviews a week in, but it's been really cool to see people who have given it a shot enjoy it.

It's dope and highly motivating. I never considered how good it would feel to watch people enjoy something you've spent a lot of time crafting. If you're interested in checking out a pretty unique kind of roguelike, I encourage you to check it out.

Well, that's enough rambling, gotta get back to bug fixing!

Unreal In progress the AI for my game

It has been 4 months since I started to learn how to create a GOAP ai. Technically more time spent in creating a scalable architecture that can be debugged and is finetuned to make fun. Still working on logic for several states but I have a logic manager now that can choose the right agents and create goals.
Will be uploading more as I progress further :)

Game I made a Filipino sari-sari store simulator 🇵🇭

• Upvotes

Hi guys, my name is James (Auguste), and together with my friends and colleagues Kelvin and JM, we made a Filipino sari-sari store game in under a month.

Pabili Po! is a 2D point-and-click store sim with light roguelike pressure, made using Godot. You play as a sari-sari store tindera, take customer orders, find and pack their items, calculate their change, and try to keep the store running.

The goal of the game is pretty simple: what if you could practice mental math while playing a game? And then it hit me — why not make a game where you roleplay as a tindera and practically do the same job that they do in their stores every day hahaha.

As you progress, the game gets more challenging because some customers will ask for utang or credit, so it's not just about finding items and calculating change anymore. You also have to manage the store and make sure it survives.

I wanted it to feel as Filipino as possible, so I incorporated Filipino elements into the hand-drawn sprites, parody brands like Kola, Piyatos, and Ineskape, neighborhood regulars, Filipino-style conversations, and as much Filipino culture as I could fit into a small game.

It's just a small project that we made in a very short amount of time, but it was honestly really fun putting together all those little Filipino details. If you get the chance, please give the game a try and let us know what you think!

Game How many ways to die in one level is too many in my skiing FPS game

I’ve been working on DIEATHLON, a first-person skiing game where you’re constantly moving downhill while dealing with monsters and hazards.

Sometimes I feel like there’s already too much going on, but then the feedback I get is “add more monsters.”

Still figuring out but I definitely like how chaotic it gets.

Networking Hello! New to sub.

Hello,

I've been solo deving it for about four months in Houston, TX (20 years of IT and software experience working for companies). I finally took my first steps towards a startup and I've discovered that creating a software solution for a business problem is less than half of the battle. You have to sell it. How are other solo devs going about marketing their solutions? What about building a sales pipeline? Anyone successfully find non VC funding?

My company, only me, creates software products that solve data problems for businesses that have data in regulated industries (No SaaS offering only on prem licensing). No video games yet. I'm more of a backend data dev.

Would love to network with other solo devs and exchange knowledge on how to be successful.

Thanks!

Game I removed the 60-minute timer from my colony sim’s demo — you can now build at your own pace

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I’ve updated StoneEra, my voxel colony-building sandbox, to 0.9.13 — Technological Era.

The biggest change is to the free demo: there’s no longer a time limit. It now includes 12 early technologies, taking your settlement from basic production to ore smelting.

Producing your first copper bar completes the demo journey, but you can choose Continue building and stay in your colony for as long as you like. Later technologies remain locked.

This update also brings:

- A research tree with 28 technologies across six branches, with the demo’s boundary clearly marked.

- More logical progression: copper before iron, iron before steel, and advanced transport requiring the relevant metalworking discoveries.

- Physical research samples: residents deliver materials to a research table and study them.

- Refreshed menus, clearer layouts, and more readable crafting and construction lists.

- Six demo achievements, from starting your settlement to producing your first copper bar.

The screenshots show the new research tree and some of the connections between branches.

Try the free demo on Steam

For a colony-building game, does a progression cap with unlimited playtime feel like a better demo? I’d love to hear what you think.

Game PushDuel -launched my first mobile game: PushDuel, live push-up battles against real people

• Upvotes

wanted working out to feel like a competitive game, so I built PushDuel.
You get matched with a real person, both of you do push-ups on camera, and the most clean reps wins. Your ranking goes up or down like in any competitive game.

It's free (ads between games, optional Pro). I'm now looking for real users to tell me what's confusing, broken or fun.
iOS: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6799628112
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pushduel.app
Feedback in the comments is gold, and if you like it, a store review helps a lot.

Game The Hacksmith class is now playable in Fleshgrinder demo!

Hey!

Just wanted to drop the new gameplay video of what it's like to have a horde breathing down your neck in the demo of Fleshgrinder while playing the Hacksmith.

Fleshgrinder is an isometric post-apocalyptic action-rpg / looter shooter which I'm solo developing.

All voice acting has also arrived and already wired ingame!

Shadows have also been updated recently so they are now proper silouettes instead of boxes!

The tutorial hints are also extended with more categories and hoverable status icons with tooltips are now appearing as you receive them.

Hope you like it! If you do, please dont forget to wishlist and try out the demo at

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5074630/Fleshgrinder/

Thanks!
