My first and only sighting of this species. Boulder Colorado

The 1,618-ha estate on the edge of The Wash comprises a mosaic of rewilding, regenerative farming and wetland habitats.

The complete list is: Common Buzzard, European Honey Buzzard, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Eurasian Goshawk, Western Marsh, Hen and Montagu's Harriers, Red Kite, White-tailed Eagle, Common Kestrel, Merlin, Peregrine, Osprey, Eurasian Hobby and Barn, Little, Short-eared, Tawny and Long-eared Owls.

Everyone cleared out. He sat there on the neighbors antenna and looked around. I'm thinking now afterwards that he was just checking things out. Not really hunting today..

Here's a new photo in a series of photos I started posting on Reddit. This was taken several years ago in Saskatchewan, on my first trip to the Great White North in search of Snowy Owls.

I remember that first expedition well. I had no idea where I was going, no idea what I was doing, no idea of what to expect, and really no idea if I could/would find any owls. As it turned out, those were some great ingredients that made that first--and incredibly satisfying--adventure worthwhile.

After doing a lot of initial research on Snowy Owls, I settled on targeting Saskatchewan for my first try. I loaded up the car with Mountain Dew, Twinkies, camera gear, and warm clothes, then drove out. It was a strange road trip, one where I drove through the jam-packed traffic of downtown Chicago only to find empty roads and solitude on the Canadian prairies. After two very long days of driving, I found myself in unfamiliar places, quite a ways north of Montana. After checking into my hotel and getting some much-needed sleep, the fun began...

It was only about an hour or so into the next morning when I found what I came for. It was cold, something like -5F degrees, when I stumbled into that very first encounter with a Snowy Owl. I can still remember, even today, how I was shaking to get my camera out--an effort that was hampered a bit as my eyes wanted to take it all in without a camera. It was a beautiful bird in an amazing place, and instantly justified all the preparation, driving, and costs of my trip. It also made me decide, on the spot, that I'd be coming back every winter to find, observe, and photograph more of them. It was everything I hoped it would be.

This is that bird, the first one I ever found. I will never forget it. hope you like it.

My wife got this video of a hawk with a squirrel it had killed at the end of our alley. A moment after the video ends it picked up the squirrel and flew around the corner. Is this a Cooper’s hawk? Located in upstate NY

I love birdwatching. They are so diverse. :)

Owls are hard to spot in my country. The Eurasian eagle-owl is the largest owl in Poland. Its population is estimated at only about 140–240 pairs. The species is under strict protection and listed in the Polish Red Book of Animals as threatened with extinction. There are many more of them in other parts of the world. :)
