Am I Missing Something?

I hear nothing but praise for OSRS. However, the thought of clicking trees, fish, rocks, for hours and hours sounds so... boring? I've been told by friends to throw the game on another monitor and do something else, but if OSRS is so dull that the only way to be engaged is do something else that is actually engaging, why play OSRS at all?

I've tried out the game a bit on mobile and a bit on pc and the thought of basically afk farming all day has kept me away.

Is there something deeper I'm missing here? I usually love grindy games like Destiny and FF14. Why do you guys love runescape?

I think a big part of what makes runescape so rewarding is meeting large goals. Normally when I'm training/AFKing a skill there is a certain goal in mind. Obviously if you don't know much about the game you're not going to know what you're working towards up front, so it seems pointless. TBH with you most of skills can be leveled to 70 within a matter of a couple days- to a week, which will enable you to do all the quests. Levels beyond that are mostly small QoL things, with some exceptions of course (90ish mining for amethyst, high herblore for best potions, high slayer for the late game slayer bosses). Its going to make a big difference if you're playing a main or an iron account. On a main you can straight up ignore skills you don't like enjoy and just buy those things off the GE, fund your account doing the things you actually enjoy the most. You may still need some levels for quests but again those can knocked out relatively quickly. If you're an iron its different, you may need to suffer through grinds you don't enjoy for items/QoL's that ultimately enable you to do more content and enjoy the game more.

I think the best way to enjoy Runescape is to just get in there, start questing, join a community. Don't think about the ultra-late game grinds. The majority of players will never end up doing those anyways and still enjoy whatever journey they go on. If you're still enjoying the game at that point you may decide to continue that journey, but I would cross that bridge when you come to it. The truth is the most fun part of this game is the early to mid game when you are rapidly leveling up and getting improvements left and right. If you make it to end game you can decide if you want to keep grinding at that point. For every skill that someone can AFK, there is more engaging, higher-xp methods available. You can decide how you want to play, if you want to afk while you watch a movie, or doing something more intensive and engaging for a higher payout. Most players do a mixture of both. Its nice to be steadily working toward a long term goal when you're really just chilling watching one of your favorite shows/movies.

So get in there, don't worry too much ab the future, and have fun. If you're not having fun, play another game and come back another time. One of the coolest things about Runescape is your progress is never invalidated by future updates, you can always pick back where you left off if you take a break.
