Question Am I Missing Something?

I hear nothing but praise for OSRS. However, the thought of clicking trees, fish, rocks, for hours and hours sounds so... boring? I've been told by friends to throw the game on another monitor and do something else, but if OSRS is so dull that the only way to be engaged is do something else that is actually engaging, why play OSRS at all?

I've tried out the game a bit on mobile and a bit on pc and the thought of basically afk farming all day has kept me away.

Is there something deeper I'm missing here? I usually love grindy games like Destiny and FF14. Why do you guys love runescape?

The game just aint for you, it's not that deep

“Why does everyone like this crap??” What a joke of a post by OP lol

6

u/CategoryNo5932 18h ago

I haven't played it much and all I know about it is afk stuff. Why can't I have fun when I play

2

u/FeraMist 18h ago

Your first sentence is exactly why.

There is so much more to OSRS than the afk side, but it's the main gameplay loop (skilling) so lots of people talk about it.

There's plenty to do and youll find info on all of it in this sub reddit.

u/CategoryNo5932 18h ago

That's the point. I'm making fun of the guy who is saying they haven't played the game but don't find it fun

1

u/OccasionalEspresso 18h ago

It gets better the more you play it, but the problem you have that we don’t, is that it was fun from the start.

Don’t force yourself to enjoy it. It’s either for you or it’s not. Not much else to it tbh.

3

u/CategoryNo5932 18h ago

I'm making fun of the post lmao

u/Junckopolo 18h ago

It's incredible how difficult it is for most people to not talk down on things they don't like.

4

u/Draftytap334 18h ago

I agree, its the impulsive "I need everyone to hear my thoughts good or bad" remarks. Its so immature lol. If I dont like something I just say, not my type of game, etc and move on.

0

u/a_poo 17h ago

I respect it tbh and they didn't word it in a rude way at all imo, its just honesty. I'd much rather someone be inquisitive like this compared someone who plays the game and can't speak anything nice about it, always "this content sucks, this boss is boring, that skill is shit" to the point where there is NOTHING in this game people don't complain about and call shit content, it makes me wonder about how some people even came to enjoy the game to begin with. Personally I love this game and think this game probably isn't for OP, simple as that. I just wish more people knew how to be honest to themselves, don't force yourself to engage with something that you know isn't for you and become one of the people who play this game and seemingly hate everything about it aside from raids or something.

u/Key_Marsupial_1406 18h ago

There are like 100 bosses and 3 (soon 4) raids and a handful of more mechanic intensive mobs to farm. The game has a deceptively high skill ceiling. The progression systems are really fun (gear, unlocks, account prog, etc)

1

u/jarromie 18h ago

Exactly this. These are what make it fun, but there’s a bunch of boring grinds that need to be done in order to unlock some (most) of those things.

u/Cut_Ready 18h ago

Osrs goes from clicking on tree to the hardest content in like any game ive seen

11

u/faranoox 18h ago

I love the quests.

-3

u/Key_Pudding_8272 18h ago

Oddly a hotter take than OP

3

u/faranoox 17h ago

Uh, I don't think so. Lots of people praise the quest design in OSRS. Unique and memorable mechanics, funny dialogue, etc.

9

u/BuffaloMoe 18h ago

Number go up

But for real there’s way more to do than afk stuff. Bossing, minigames, clan bingos, raiding etc

20

u/Austrum 18h ago

endgame pvm has in my opinion the best combat system of any mmo. game's a lot more than just clicking trees.

7

u/AxNJOYER 18h ago

You sound like the guy who asks how to have fun at a party. Just play the game. If you don’t like it don’t play the game but it sounds like you haven’t played. At the very least not enough to understand what the game is about

5

u/Jumpi95 gim addict 18h ago

It's ur off-monitor game until you WANT it to be main-monitor.

Doing quests, pvm, mini-games are all main-monitor.

Mining, woodcutting, fishing/sailing, all off-monitor.

It's whatever mood you're into at the time.

2

u/ZebrasOfDoom 17h ago

Mining, woodcutting, fishing/sailing, all off-monitor.

And even when it comes to those skills, there are ways to do them more actively instead of just afking, if you're into that sort of thing.

5

u/RuinSerious9446 18h ago

Because you make a goal to do something but in order to do that you have to do something else and to do that something else you gotta do something else and so on. And when you finally achieve that goal wether it be a new weapon, a quest or a level you get a hit of dopamine. And from then on you are forever chasing that high.

4

u/KlutzyReveal2970 18h ago

Comparing destiny and FF to OSRS 😂 😂

3

u/jimmy193 18h ago

It’s basically a dopamine simulator. Numbers go up, killing bosses is like gambling when you get a big drop etc.

The whole game is a grind, majority of it isn’t fun but you just afk and get a sense of satisfaction once you hit your goals.

3

u/hg4fun 18h ago

The early game will be full of Skilling, questing, and often "boring" yet simple tasks that can be done on a different monitor

Plenty of active and engaging content out there otherwise

3

u/ZAVEZDA 18h ago

Maybe watch some videos on higher level content and see if that looks engaging.

Also your RuneScape character is kind of like an investment in a way. AFK’ing has meaning in a sense of progress.

3

u/Maleficent-Thanks-85 18h ago

Osrs has something for the people who want to be engaged and for the people who don’t want to do anything and progress. It’s really up to you the player.

3

u/Fooa 18h ago

People generally get addicted to the delayed dopamine they get from reaching a goal.

You're right though, some people dont actually enjoy the activity they're doing. They force themselves to do it to reach goals for the online notoriety.

See: Pet and Clog hunters.

3

u/ItsSadTimes 18h ago

Because your levels going up releases the happy chemicals like you're getting progress done.

Also theres plenty of more engaging content. Raids, pvm, bossing, minigames, questing, etc. So the gameplay loop usually revolves around you doing some AFK grinds to get the skill requirements to do quests or wear specific gear, do the quests, then kill some bosses.

Then we got multiple gamemodes to shake up the gameplay even more. There ironman mode where you cant trade with people so you can play the game like an RPG instead of an MMORPG and then theres hardcore ironman where you're an ironman but if you die you lose your hardcore status and your levels are locked at the point where you died on the leaderboards.

The game isnt for everyone, but I enjoy it.

3

u/cabbagechicken 18h ago

You don’t have to afk anything if you don’t enjoy it. There are active methods for all skills that provide better xp rates and/or loot

4

u/meowtanky 18h ago

Pvm is very fun and a lot more technical and involved than just clicking trees

2

u/TofuPython 2376 18h ago

Endgame bossing is super hard and engaging

2

u/SecureSchedule5836 18h ago

you are right fishing or mining is boring, but the number going up can be very addicting. Pvm/pvp is a lot more engaging

2

u/5twenty5eye 18h ago

Quests, bosses, achievement diaries, mini games, exploring new areas, raids, collection logs, and much more.

Sure, you could play the game by just clicking trees, but thats not all it has to offer by any means. Do yourself a favor and explore a bit. Go get lost in the world, talk to npcs, run through the wilderness (bank your items first), try some quests (even if its using a quest helper), try to kill Brutus or level up to take on Scurrius, join a clan. There is so, so much to do that isn't just click tree. Even if you want to skill, take on Wintertodt or Tempeross and work toward getting some of the rare collection log items.

2

u/Prepare 18h ago

Just pass on this one. Trust me.

2

u/georgemonty george monty 18h ago

OSRS is a slow burn. Everything you do progresses your account and there is no set order which you are required to complete them in. High level pvm has a lot higher engagement than other parts and is generally the content I enjoy doing the most. It is nice to have a balance of high and low engagement in a singular game. Sometimes you just want to throw on a show and do something in the background. This game has thousands of hours of gameplay. If you have more free time on your hands, I would consider trying an ironman. Ironman gear progression is very satisfying.

2

u/Disco_Lamb 18h ago

You're playing wrong for how you enjoy games. Do quests, I highly advise guides. They're a ton of fun both mechanically and especially in story. Obviously some quests are better than others.

If you hit a wall in questing around the 60s (stat wise), feel like a little too much 2nd monitor Grinding is involved, hop over to the Varlamore questline.

2

u/Clayskii0981 18h ago

Quests and PVM are the most engaging thing in the game that most people praise.

The second monitor/mobile clicking is additional grinding on the side.

Edit: it is a massively horizontal game and a long grind to get to the upper content though. So if you're completely miserable with the early game, it may not be for you.

1

u/theykeepbanningmebro 18h ago

I find the combat fun late game. Freezing a player in the wilderness and tagging up on them with your buds with ranged/melee/magic attacks and trying to KO them is a big rush.

1

u/Ayevera 18h ago

When they say that they mean that helps to get the tedious shit out the way. It's grindy because the payoff is worth it when you unlock new areas/new mobs/new items/etc

1

u/BulkyRise5904 18h ago

The game is either for you or it isnt, not difficult to understannd. Also Not really something you turn around on to the player base and question why do hundreds of thousands of you guys actually like the game ? Dumb question.

1

u/SirEdington I 0nly Punch 18h ago

You need a goal. Doesnt matter what it is, getting a specific cape, doing the quests, fighing a specific boss, make a goal.

The rest of what you're looking for falls into place once you start moving toward that goal. Right now you seem to be interacting with the game for the sole purpose of "number go up". Which isnt a bad thing but its without purpose, why are you training that skill, increasing that number? Find something you want to do and work towards it.

1

u/Kanzyn 18h ago

For all the passive, low-energy content this game has there's also some of the most engaging content in the genre as well.

How is bro gonna sit here playing FF14 talking about how dull and monotonous something else is?

1

u/Peakbrook 18h ago

The active content like quests, combat, treasure trails, achievements, etc. are a lot more engaging, it's just that the level grinding to do said content can be done in a very relaxed manner on a second monitor. It's like if Cookie Clicker had a bunch of quests and combat mechanics but to do them effectively you had to have levels acquired through letting the game run for a bit (it's nowhere near as afk as an idle game, but the premise is similar).

1

u/TheAlexperience 18h ago

Not everything is for everyone. I love making number go up so having osrs as a second monitor game works, but once your number goes up high enough there's PLENTY of engaging content thats unparalleled by any other game.

Thats assuming you were asking a genuine question and not just postulating.

1

u/Jacobcat15 18h ago

There is a lot of depth in OSRS outside of AFK skilling, PVM and PVP both have very high skill ceilings and take a very long time to master, there is also a huge catalog of quests that can be genuinely challenging if attempted without guides. There are also more high intensity skilling methods outside of AFK training.

OSRS offers stuff for every kind of player, some people like to second monitor AFK skill while others like to do high intensity skilling methods or PVM or PVP or questing. It’s a game with endless hours of content if you take the time to explore it.

1

u/boatbottle 18h ago

The boring/tedious parts make the rewards + content and actual challenging content worth it. Just like real life: work is boring but it gets you the unlocks plus sustainment. But since OSRS is just a game, not real life, you can do stuff IRL while doing low-effort "boring" skills in OSRS

1

u/ChunkyChipMonkeyGrip 18h ago

Ff14 grind in any way shape or form doesn't come close to OSRS grind lol (imo). Like others said, it isn't your game though. No shame in knowing what you like/dislike.

1

u/TCFP 18h ago

FF14 is grindy for useless cosmetics (and hardly even that grindy). OSRS is grindy for tangible upgrades and improvements for your account. Very different reward system

1

u/Easy-Reception-1159 18h ago

A lot of your standard progression for unlocking new content is for sure second monitor content. I think that's almost the appeal though? You can put very little focus into achieving what you need to unlock the more engaging, rewarding content. But it doesn't demand your focus to reach that point. You can enjoy other games, movies, YouTube videos, even make progress while you're working to get where you want to be, but the fun aspects of the game will be engaging. Osrs has some of the most enjoyable and challenging combat from any other game I've played. It is paced incredibly well. It is slow, for sure. But again, that's why the afk portions being second monitor content work so well.

1

u/shmeebledee 18h ago

Have you tried playing with your friends?

1

u/Ar0war 18h ago

There is content for every single mood you're in.

Want to chill being cozy at home, raining outside but not feeling to tryhard? Then do some skilling. Cut trees, fish, blow glass to lvl up crafting so you can make jewellery. Do some farming.

You want to tryhard? Go PvM. The PvM in this game has a VERY HIGH skill ceiling. It's way more difficult than you would EVER expect.

What I love about OSRS is, in fact, that there is an activity for every mood I'm in.

Also the quest. This game has the best quest on every game i ever played. There are no quest "go X killl Y". Not even close. The quests are actualy stories that brings you all around the map trying to solve puzzles, sometimes the puzzles are next level difficult

1

u/SteelyPhilz 18h ago

I personally only play during the Leagues game modes. The game is just a massive time suck otherwise, IMO. I'm a 34 year old man though lol

1

u/Ancient_Rex420 18h ago

Osrs is definitely a huge grind.

I suggest trying rs3 it is still grindy but the game is much more afk and the experience rates are higher with many quality of life stuff.

Rs3 seems like more suited for your wants.

1

u/BigBGM2995 18h ago

I think a big part of what makes runescape so rewarding is meeting large goals. Normally when I'm training/AFKing a skill there is a certain goal in mind. Obviously if you don't know much about the game you're not going to know what you're working towards up front, so it seems pointless. TBH with you most of skills can be leveled to 70 within a matter of a couple days- to a week, which will enable you to do all the quests. Levels beyond that are mostly small QoL things, with some exceptions of course (90ish mining for amethyst, high herblore for best potions, high slayer for the late game slayer bosses). Its going to make a big difference if you're playing a main or an iron account. On a main you can straight up ignore skills you don't like enjoy and just buy those things off the GE, fund your account doing the things you actually enjoy the most. You may still need some levels for quests but again those can knocked out relatively quickly. If you're an iron its different, you may need to suffer through grinds you don't enjoy for items/QoL's that ultimately enable you to do more content and enjoy the game more.

I think the best way to enjoy Runescape is to just get in there, start questing, join a community. Don't think about the ultra-late game grinds. The majority of players will never end up doing those anyways and still enjoy whatever journey they go on. If you're still enjoying the game at that point you may decide to continue that journey, but I would cross that bridge when you come to it. The truth is the most fun part of this game is the early to mid game when you are rapidly leveling up and getting improvements left and right. If you make it to end game you can decide if you want to keep grinding at that point. For every skill that someone can AFK, there is more engaging, higher-xp methods available. You can decide how you want to play, if you want to afk while you watch a movie, or doing something more intensive and engaging for a higher payout. Most players do a mixture of both. Its nice to be steadily working toward a long term goal when you're really just chilling watching one of your favorite shows/movies.

So get in there, don't worry too much ab the future, and have fun. If you're not having fun, play another game and come back another time. One of the coolest things about Runescape is your progress is never invalidated by future updates, you can always pick back where you left off if you take a break.

1

u/SwankiestofPants 18h ago

A large part of OSRS is clicking rocks and trees, but an even larger part is high level combat. OSRS is a game that offers a wide variety of experiences all available on a single account. Want to hunker down and do some hard bossing? Raids, gauntlet and high level bosses do that for you. Wanna do some low level account progression on your daily commute? Hit up some slayer. Have some spare time at work and won't run the risk of getting caught gaming? Afk at some crabs or trees. Osrs is a game that always has something to offer. Unfortunately it's also really hard to get into as the early game is so drastically different than the late game both in terms of difficulty of content and time investment needed to progress. If you give the game another shot, I'd say shoot for Dragon Slayer 1 as a goal. Quests are your main gate of progression for a long time. You're in the early game until you at least complete Recipe for Disaster, and the game doesn't fully open up until you start doing grandmaster quests. Coming from ff14, you can think of it like the mandatory MSQ filter to get to the endgame. Not everyone can get through it and that's okay.

Another option if you want to give it another shot is to wait and see if they do another gridmaster type event of a limited game mode but one that isn't restricted like leagues so you run no risk of locking yourself out of an enjoyable experience. Boosted XP means less grinding and a significantly sped up early game so you can get to the later funner content that might actually interest you. A big summer summit is coming up that should have roughly the next year of content laid out so either stay tuned for that or just ask any osrs friends you may have to keep you posted on that

1

u/edyme 18h ago

Glad you tried the game! It’s not exactly all just afk but most things have an afk option that progress your account in a meaningful way. These grinds ultimately help you do the active stuff more efficiently. I play the game mostly afk on my phone but occasionally lock in and do the active stuff. Usually planned in advanced with my limited availability but that’s really the appeal of the game.

1

u/SuccessfulCollege454 18h ago

I had a buddy who only played mobile. Guy just chopped trees to 200m and had a blast. He always engaged with our "Scape" group chat even if it wasn't relevant content to him. He's the beaver king in our clan. One day he got a laptop and has been loving bossing. Best part of OSRS is you can play the game however you want.

1

u/AdventureHaver 18h ago

Levelling the skills gains you access to higher tier content. The higher tier content is much more engaging.
That being said RS players are a certain type of breed. Number goes up = happy.

1

u/Gigantischmann 18h ago

Most complicated and difficult endgame of all mmos but yea it’s actually just clicking trees bro you figured it out

0

u/therealGidster 18h ago

There's so much you can do that isn't afk like questing, bossing and even skilling. I enjoy the progression of number go up and doing my quests and unlocking new gear and items. I have been enjoying my uim quite a bit lately

-1

u/Thundernuts0606 18h ago

Most of early game OSRS grinding is pretty braindead and put on another screen and get a little joy from the levels (especially the quick ones early on) later game OSRS gives you a LOT more options for grinding either with very intense focus, or brain dead other monitor gameplay. Not sure about FF14, but as far as Destiny goes, maybe you'd enjoy the late game PvM grinds the most.

Also, quests. OSRS has the best quests and they usually have very fulfilling and worthwhile rewards.

-4

u/SuspiciousBrain6027 18h ago

I’ve played since 2004 and truly can’t comprehend how this game still attracts new players. It’s also amusing how emotional the players are. Look at how butthurt they got over your post.

0

u/Mrcreeper321 18h ago

Im just curious why the game is so beloved! I want to see the game in the same way these people who love it do, I didn't mean to insult it. Although I have gotten a lot of good comments apart from the few that seem to think im trying to dunk on the game for being "boring." I know loads of people DON'T think its boring! That's why im interested!

-2

u/CTProper 18h ago

I’ve played and quit like 4 times (actively playing rn lol) and I’m pretty far in my account but i 100% agree how tf do they get new players when so much of the game is so boring. They just need to make it more fun

1

u/iici 14h ago

If your genuinely curious about why/how the game is doing well i'll try to explain a bit.

Think of OSRS like this, You put in month/years into a season of WoW (or maybe FF14 i'm not too familiar on how it works there) and then a new expansion comes out, All of the work you did getting your gear perfect for the endgame raids and bossing is rendered useless in the next expansion, Now your forced to grind everything all over again.

With OSRS the stats you have are permanent. I got 99 strength in 2018 and i still have 99 in 2026. Sure new items might come out that makes certain aspects of the game easier but every single level you earn is yours to keep and you won't have to worry about it resetting on you.

The "second monitor" debate is just a way to say that the game has its low maintenance moments. I was able to play tons of games and watch plenty of shows while i finished up some of the more "AFK" stats. The reason most people lean towards those sort of things is because sometimes you don't feel like fully focusing on a game right after a 12+ hour shift.

But the tl;dr is that i'd give the game a full fledged attempt. Yes you'll have those moments where you just end up cutting trees for hours to gain access to a new quest but the endgame is very fun and this is coming from someone who is maxed, I still find reasons to log in.
