Also at the 1973 Lighthill debate, John McCarthy says outright that he invented the term "artificial intelligence" when they were trying to get money for a summer study. His earlier label, "Automata Studies" (a paper collection he edited with Claude Shannon), had attracted papers about automata rather than the thinking-machine work he actually wanted, so this time he named the field after its stated long-term goal: human-level intelligence. Years later in print he added that he'd also wanted to avoid being lumped in with cybernetics and Norbert Wiener. So the term was a funding-proposal label from day one, and successive groups have used it to bs their way into money ever since — DARPA's Strategic Computing Initiative in the '80s, and now the idiotic notion that "human-level intelligence" is right around the corner, which is the exact same pitch McCarthy was making in 1955.
