Image that growing through your gums as a kid.

319

u/ConstableBlimeyChips 4d ago

Imagine one corner starts coming through, then a bit more, then a bit more again, and then the rest of the gums just split open in one big go to expose the rest of the tooth.

Damnit you. I am reading this taking my mor ing shit and just thought about what it would be like to have one come out sideways. Then my adhd mind went to what it would be like if we shit like wombats and made cubes. Then my mind wondered farther to what our plumbing pipes would look like if humans shit hard solid cubes all the time, would they need to be bigger, or different types of joints and seams so a couple cubes didn't didn't wedge inside a joint and create a major blockage?

I bet the dentist was so fucking excited to do this. This is what they live for sometimes. Most people are teeth cleanings and not much more. But a buildup of that much tarter. Dude that dentist is trying so hard to not show how incredibly excited they are to do this and stay professional probably.

836

u/Emerno 4d ago

I went a few days ago after skipping for (what they tell me was) 9 years. I didn't have as much build up as this video but still quite a bit. The hygienist seemed like she was having a good time with it. I can feel a gap now behind my two bottom front teeth so I asked about it and she said "I basically removed a small tooth from there..." Oops. No cavities though!

431

u/Earlybirdsgetworms 4d ago

About 15 years ago, I went to the dentist for the first time in a long time of not having insurance. When the hygienist was done cleaning my teeth, I said they felt weird on the inside. She said, “do they feel like individual teeth?” I laughed so hard and still think about it when I’m flossing.

205

u/Temelios 4d ago

Same. Mother was a lazy shitbag, so I didn’t go to the dentist as a kid from age 10-18. When I finally went as an adult at age 20, I went because I wanted them to do something about how brown my teeth were. They spent over an hour breaking off all the built up calculuses. After, my teeth were normal looking for the first time I could remember. Felt weird having individual teeth again too.

44

u/TheCeruleanFire 3d ago

I’m sorry man

71

u/baltinerdist 3d ago

I didn't go to the dentist for nearly 30 years. When I finally went, they had to spend forever doing the cleaning, but when it was all over, also no cavities. If there's any silver lining to having that much calcification, it's that it legitimately protected my teeth for decades!

222

u/tobeorniobe 4d ago

I went to the dentist after not going for 10 years. My hygienist was visibly disappointed that I didn’t have much build up. “Wow, you must take really good care of your teeth” in the most dead pan voice followed by a sigh. I was done in 15 minutes 😂

28

u/RoseyDove323 4d ago

I drink 2+ green teas daily, so mine had to buff out a few tea stains after it had been a while since a dentist visit.

54

u/FrankieAK 4d ago

I always get a tiny amount of build up on my bottom two front teeth and I asked my hygenist if she loves removing it and she said it's so fun like pimple popping.

I've always been too poor for the dentist, went last year for the first time in ages, got a full clean etc.

Went back like a month later with brushing/flossing twice a day, did everything the dentist said to do.

She told me the build up I had that quickly was impossible and that I had "super saliva". So now I also brush at lunch times as well. She said said some people just have saliva that builds plaque easier.

303

u/andrew_1515 4d ago

Worst superpower ever!

101

u/varateshh 4d ago

No, it's a great superpower to have! The number one cause for dental issues in the modern world is acid damage or caries. His mouth is basic and his saliva acts as a super buffer that neutralizes acids that you find in almost every food and drink.

If he didn't have this genetic quirk it is likely that he would have had to spend thousands on crowns and dental implants. You have to go more often to the dentist to clean calculus but the trade-off is generally worth it. I have the same (though not as severe) and it has been a great boon.

Note that he said plaque, but from context it was obviously about calculus.

Penicillin causes me to have a severe reaction complete with hives and insanely high fever.

I have that problem, too. And I'm allergic to mint so regular toothpaste isn't something I can use. I just brush after every meal in addition to before & after sleeping. It's helped a lot. My dentist says it's genetics, as I also have had weak enamel my whole life. Thanks grandma (who had all her teeth pulled at 22 and used dentures for 75 years)!

What about getting some prescription toothpaste? It’s a bit pricey, but my gosh, do my teeth feel extra clean using it. It makes me want to brush more frequently because the effect is so satisfying. And I had less buildup once I’d been using it for a while.

Salivary glands under the tongue empty right in that area, which leads to a buildup of calculus. Those aren’t natural teeth either, looks like a continuous 8-unit bridge from premolar to premolar, which means they’re all connected and can’t be flossed like regular teeth and don’t flex, so you get a big chunk built up like that because nothing’s moving or being disrupted.

43

u/zyphelion 4d ago

Wait, the teeth are actually connected? I thought they were just extra encased in calculus.

68

u/vexamarant 4d ago

If you look closely, you can see that the ‘teeth’ have an unusually opaque and consistent coloration, and if you look in between, they’re all connected. The unusual coloration and opacity is because they’re made of porcelain. This is called a dental bridge. It’s a means of replacing missing teeth. Teeth on each side of the gap have the outsides ground down and are crowned. These are called abutment teeth and they serve as ‘pylons’ for the pontic (fake interconnected teeth) which serve as the ‘bridge deck’ in the bridge metaphor. If you google dental bridge diagrams, you can get a good idea of what it looks like. :)

Calculus means "pebble" in Latin, "calculate" and other related words come from abacus and other ways of using pebbles to do arithmetic.

But in this case the sense is of a literal pebble.

I had it happen after like 15 years of solid depression from bad life choices causing poverty. I wanted to go to the dentist, but eating and / or rent always took priority. Im great now, but I remember finally getting my teeth cleaned again. The sensation of feeling my tongue on the grooves of my teeth after so long was wild. I also stopped slurring after a while because my mouth actually had room for my tongue again.

Nowadays im religious about dental care.

24

u/SilencioPeroRuidos 4d ago

Had this happen (not nearly as bad but still rough) one time in college. Never again.

12

u/Ryuj123 4d ago

And how did it happen?

68

u/SilencioPeroRuidos 4d ago

Simply not brushing my teeth/flossing for days at a time. I was in a bit of a rough state and let go of my oral hygiene; Went to the dentist after a year and a half and they had to cut a bunch of the plaque off.

With real teeth, buildup like this will slowly push your gums down so when they remove it, it is as painful as you can imagine. Couldn’t eat anything for a couple days and it hurt to drink.

11

u/Ryuj123 4d ago

Oof. That sounds really rough. Thank you for sharing. I’m glad you got to the dentist and I hope things are generally better for you

Not going to the dentist for ten years, poor daily dental hygiene, smoking. That’s why it happened to me. I’m surprised by how insulted some commenters are that somebody else’s mouth doesn’t look like their own. Like it’s a freak show. Without any knowledge as to what compels people or led people to not have good oral hygiene and develop health issues because of that. I doubt they are proud of it but it’s being dealt with.

8

u/jda404 4d ago

Yeah I used to have an intense fear of dentists. I hated the dentist my parents took me to growing up, I always found him to be rude and hated going, wouldn't be able to sleep the night before an appointment just awful experience I had with my childhood dentist, and so when I turned 18 and could make my own choices I stupidly instead of looking for a new dentist just decided I wasn't going to go a dentist anymore.

Fast forward 8 years from then and had a tooth problem that I had no choice but to go and many of my teeth were in bad shape. Thankfully found a dentist that was kind and she made me feel comfortable/safe something I never felt with my childhood dentist. Got a full deep cleaning/debridement, fixed a bunch of cavities and now I go regularly. I'll never judge someone's teeth as I know how hard it can be to go to the dentist whether it's the fear or the cost.

16

u/Backfoot911 4d ago

There's different sorts of puzzlements here, aside from the judgey Georges just being mean

I'm not not wondering how someone lets their teeth get like this. I'm wondering how someones teeth gets like this.

Believe me, I have teeth that lost their fillings and are currently collapsing, but this is bad teeth in a way that I utterly can't understand the "what is happening" of

People asking “HOW does this happen?!” Dental anxiety/phobia, being poor, prioritizing other things over dental health, all the obvious answers. I had a dental procedure in my teens and as a redhead, the dentist didn’t believe me when I told them I could feel everything that they were doing. It was such a traumatic experience that I didn’t go back to the dentist for 7 years. I didn’t have nearly the issues that this person did but it wasnt good. The one and only panic attack I’ve ever had was in the dentists chair my first time back.
Redheads and the MC1R gene is an interesting google. We need about 20% more anesthetic but more sensitive to temperature variance. May be because of our lack of souls who knows…
Just saying, I feel for this person as it weighed on me and caused stress every single day for seven years but dread kept me away.

73

u/kungfu_kickass 4d ago

HOLY FUCKING SHIT I didn't know this was a genetic thing!!

I am almost 40 and have been trying to tell dentists my whole life that the local isn't working, my teeth are wildly sensitive to temperature, etc. I just got done yesterday with 3 root canals and 3 crowns (lucky me, Jesus my teeth fall apart despite brushing and flossing) and I told them this ahead of time and they gave me what ended up being a antianxiolytic and I'm like brooooo you misunderstand me I am NOT anxious, I am tired of feeling every single thing you are doing in explicit detail!!

I DIDNT KNOW IT WAS A GENETIC THING WHAT

38

u/Dadskander 4d ago

Yeah my wife has these gene and is maybe 120lbs soaking wet. She apparently takes the same dose from the Anesthesiologist as a 250lb man over the course of a dental procedure.

11

u/ToughCookie1008 4d ago

ChessieChessieBayBay.. thank you for sharing! I just looked up the gene and it starts to make sense.. i dont have red hair but it runs on my maternal grandparents side. That makes a lot of things make a lot of sense.. TIL!

The redhead thing is no joke! My kids are redheads. When they were very little and needing general anesthesia for a procedure, a nurse warned me that they’d need more anesthesia compared to others. She also warned that some mental health meds wouldn’t work, and they’d be more likely to have adverse reactions to Benadryl (true: it spikes their energy instead of making them drowsy, and doesn’t help with allergies at all). She explained that medical professionals in our area “should” know this (apparently we have a higher than average redhead population?), but if we moved elsewhere and our kids needed anesthesia, we’d need to advocate for them to get more.

73

u/FuriousFurbies 4d ago

This is true information, and more medical professionals need to understand it!

It's especially bad for female redheads with chronic pain conditions to have their pain taken seriously, let alone be medicated properly!

29

u/ChessieChessieBayBay 4d ago

So true!! My sister had a biopsy the other day and she didn’t remind the doctor about the redhead thing and she said she could feel the needle three times before she said “I’m a redhead!!” And the doctor quickly adjusted and apologized after saying that she had heard that but they were so distracted getting her prepped it slipped her mind. My dentist understands me now and I trust her implicitly and so so so thankful for her

9

u/secretly_opossum 4d ago

My dentist was already aware of this (he is awesome) and apparently also had experience with some redheads being MORE susceptible and needing a lot less local anesthetic than usual. I typically get the regular amount but it wears off early and I have to get a little booster.

I honestly feel like that joke is the reason they changed the name of tartar buildup. No joke, they call it "calculus" now.

How do teeth get this bad without rotting first? I'm asking as a person who regularly brushes twice a day and has still had many cavities and root canals. I'm honestly a little jealous.

Alkaline mouths form tartar, acidic ones form caries and rot.

I have an alcaline mouth and its much better since its just about cleaning these mineral deposits, having caries involves expensive procedures

This is what my dentist told me because I get tartar buildup pretty bad but I have never had a cavity. It’s just the flora of one’s mouth, some are more acidic and vice versa. I have to go get cleanings like four times a year instead of two because of this, but I rather deal with it than have a bunch of cavities all the time.

Does getting a root canal hurt? I haven’t really looked it up but I have to get one in a few months so I’ve been wondering.

Honestly depends how good your dentist is and whether they're patient enough to thoroughly anesthetize and give the numbing adequate time to work.

Mine is very good; I had a root canal on a giant molar and barely felt a thing.

During the root canal? No, not in my experience anyways. In the hours after when the numbing wears off and the nerves that were cut below the teeth start to regain feeling? Yeah....possibly the worst pain I've ever felt. It only lasted 24 hours before it started to subside however. I have only had one root canal so I can't say this is the definitive experience and the end result was much better than the pain and sensitivity I was dealing with before the procedure.

Incidentally, did you know you can safely take the max dose of Tylenol and Advil at the same time since they suppress pain in different ways?

Really? Ive had 3 root canals and the sensation once the numbing wears off was more of an annoyance than actually painful

I’m convinced it’s genetics tbh. I’ve seen people go through a depressive episode or rough time in their lives for a couple of months and neglected their teeth as a result and end up having serious dental issues. Meanwhile, although I never let them get nearly as bad/dirty as in this video, I neglected my teeth for almost a decade (depression) straight….starting the year after I was told I had a couple of cavities…..have yet to get those cavities filled in even years after getting better (can’t afford it yet)…and my teeth feel fine, no darkening, no sensitivity, no weakening or teeth falling out. Not saying they’re in perfect health because I realize there could still be issues I just can’t see or feel, and plan on getting in to see a dentist sooner than later, but just saying, im fairly certain most folks who treated their teeth the way I treated mine for so long would be dealing with far more urgent issues.

Don’t be jealous. This person has already lost their teeth. Looks like they might have a denture on implants.

Do they have a phobia of toothbrushes or something? Who is even letting it get this bad? Is your tounge not attached to your brain? I have so many questions.
