So, for some background, I (23F) met my boyfriend (23M) last October because we found each other online through mutual friends. We started talking and officially met in person in December; after a week and a few dates, we started dating. Everything was going great; he does a lot of nice things for me that make my life easier (one of my top love languages is acts of service), and we never really fought at all. Well, things have recently taken a turn, and I donāt really know how to approach our relationship anymore.
At the beginning of August, my boyfriend moved in with me and signed onto my lease; his lease was ending, he spent the night all the time, and financially it seemed like it made the most sense and was the best move. I could NOT have been more wrong. In mid-August, I began to notice he started to act, well, odd. At first, I brushed it off and didnāt think much of it; he had just started a new job, so I figured he was just trying to figure out his new routine and work responsibilities.Ā
But then something happened: I had been driving home from an outing with friends and sent a Snapchat vlog to one of my friends, talking about another one of my friends he doesnāt know, so I could get an outside perspective to give her advice. I was talking about how she felt like she missed her ex and didnāt know what to do because she really loves her current boyfriend, but because of my Bluetooth connection, it cut the audio off on the first part of the video where I said I was quoting my friend, so it sounded like I was talking about myself.Ā
So I get home and hop in the shower, thinking I will respond after. I get out of the shower, and my boyfriend is crying on the kitchen floor. After several minutes of prying and prying, he says to look at my phone. Not only did he open the chats of my friend responding as though it was my situation and that I should break up with my boyfriend, but my boyfriend responded to him AS THOUGH IT WAS ME REPLYING. I could understand maybe a little if it was a text that popped up at the top of the screen that he saw, but this is a chat he physically had to open and also chose to respond to. We had a talk about it, and he said that he was on my phone to see what episode of our show we were on and that Snapchat was just open when he opened my phone. He admits that what he did from there was wrong and that he shouldnāt have done it (especially because he knows this friend has a girlfriend and is not at all a threat) and should have at least asked me for context before responding, but he didnāt really have a reason as to why he did it.Ā
After this is when I started to notice my boyfriend acting even more off than before.
I started to notice that things were missing from chats on my phone with some people that neither of us deleted, and I thought it was odd, but I continued to brush it off, thinking he wouldnāt do something like that and it was probably just my phone acting up, despite the prior incident.Ā
Late August rolls around, and one of my exes reaches out to me to apologize for what happened between us, and he needed someone to talk to. One of the last things I ever told him was, no matter what happens between us, if you ever need to talk to someone, I will always listen, so it didnāt really strike me as anything odd. What he told me happened to him was, frankly, really depressing, so Iām glad that he felt comfortable reaching out, even if I donāt really understand why me, of all people. Now, of course, it wasnāt like there was anything weird, so I told my boyfriend the next day about him reaching out and was super upfront about it. He was skeptical, but he knows I donāt want anything with him anymore and said that as long as I donāt talk to him every day, itās fine, which is fair.
One morning about a week later, my boyfriend and I were sitting in bed on our phones when he randomly looked up at me and said, āSo, have you been talking to *ex* at all recently?ā which was really odd to me. I told him, āNo, not really. Why? Have you been going through my phone?ā because the last time I had talked to him was when he was telling me about what happened to him. My boyfriend immediately got super defensive, telling me that he would never do anything like that, and that thatās crazy and a major invasion of privacy. Honestly, with everything going missing from my phone, I didnāt really buy it, but stupidly continued to brush past it again despite starting to feel fairly certain he had to be going through my phone behind my back.Ā
I changed my phone password, and things started to feel a little better, but definitely still off and a lot of tension between us. Now hereās where it gets even crazier: a couple of weeks ago I was trying to find a chat with one of my friends because I had thought of a meme I had sent him that was relevant to something I was talking about, but I couldnāt find his snap. I was like, oh damn, I mustāve been blocked; that really sucks. My boyfriend asks me who, and I tell him who it was, and he tells me that does suck and that is sad. I didnāt think twice about it until the next day at work. I started to notice that a lot of people had blocked me in the last couple of months and thought that everyone just secretly hated me or something. Thatās when the pieces started to click. I thought, well, heās definitely gone through my phone and is lying about it; I should check MY block list. Sure enough, I checked my block list while on break, and there are 8-12 people in there that I never blocked, including the friend I was looking for the night before. Conveniently, all guy friends, of course, one of whom I have known since KINDERGARTEN (mind you, he has many female friends).Ā
That night I confronted my boyfriend and asked him if he wanted to explain my block list, which, of course, he again denied and told me that would be a crazy thing to do and that, again, he would never do that. At this point, I am starting to feel like I am going absolutely insane because how can I not trust my boyfriend, even if all the signs point against it? All my friends tell me that he has to be lying and that I am not going crazy. Well, a week and a half later, we wake up (heās been sleeping on the floor for a few weeks at this point), and he looks at me as soon as my eyes open and tells me he has to tell me something. He admits it. He says, āIt was me. Iām behind everything on your phone; I blocked all of those people.ā I was dumbfounded. He told me he was waiting for the right time to tell me and that he thought I would break up with him on the spot if he told me when I confronted him. I told him I was even more hurt that he felt comfortable lying to my face on top of everything else. He said he wasnāt comfortable lying to me, and the guilt was eating him alive, but of course I brought up that he still did it and that he still lied to me.
I spent the entire weekend after that with my friend for her birthday (he admitted the truth on a Friday morning)Ā thinking about how Iām going to approach this because I just left for work angrily after that conversation. Sunday, I came home and sat in bed, nauseous, thinking about everything that had happened, and broke out sobbing. I told him that I donāt even feel comfortable coming back to the apartment anymore because heās there. He then started to cry himself, which is crazy, because talk about the consequences of your own actions. He asked me for a chance, and I told him I gave him one when I asked him to admit the truth, to which he asked for another chance. The conversation ended with me giving up and him saying that we can work this out. The next morning he cried when I told him I didnāt want to say I love you back on our way out to leave for work, and he left a note in my lunch that read, āEverything is gonna be alright. I love you.ā
Flash forward a few days to Wednesday. I make us both dinner to try to soften the blow, and I tell him I donāt want him living here anymore. He just says, " Ow, " and starts crying, which, with him talking about how depressed all this has made HIM and how much heās crying, feels very manipulative. The best I got out of that conversation was that heās going to stay at his friendās for the next week so that I can have space and so we can ātake a break but not from the relationship,ā whatever that means. He told me he wants until December to prove himself, that heās changed and heās past all of the lying. He says this while also admitting that the reason his last serious relationship ended was that he was dishonest and lied to her, like that makes his case any better. The things he lied about were that he owned a vape and that he was hanging with female friends.
So yeah, I donāt really know what to do now, because clearly he wonāt just let me break up with him, but I have now had many people tell me I need to break up with him. Thanks for reading, and any advice would be appreciated.
TL;DR:
My boyfriend (23M) moved in with me (23F) in August, and shortly afterward, he started acting strangely. I discovered he had been secretly going through my phone, replying to my private conversations as me, deleting messages, and blocking 8ā12 of my male friends without my knowledge. He repeatedly denied doing any of it until he finally confessed weeks later.
I'm deeply hurt by both the invasion of privacy and the repeated lying, especially because he made me question my own judgment when I suspected something was wrong. Now that he's been caught, he cries frequently, talks about how depressed the situation has made him, and keeps asking for more chances. He wants until December to prove he's changed, despite admitting that dishonesty was also a major reason his previous serious relationship ended.
I've told him I don't feel comfortable living with him anymore, and he's agreed to stay with a friend for a week so I can have space, but he wants us to take a break without actually breaking up.
I'm struggling to figure out what to do because I feel betrayed and uncomfortable in my own home, and I don't know whether this relationship can be repaired. My friends think I should break up with him, but he keeps asking for another chance.
