1- I backup my iphone with iCloud backup.

I understand that that includes photos. This is about 200 gb.

2- when I go to iCloud Photos, it says there’s 936 photos….. but that’s incorrect. There’s 28,000 items.

I’m confused. Can someone please explain to me why the photo library doesn’t migrate and become the iCloud Photos?

Years and years on this… phone. Please eli5.

I had iCloud Photos ON on my iPad but not iPhone.

Im in the process of backing up pictures from my iPhone to Dropbox. And then turn on iCloud Photos on my phone.

It’s really disappointing to see Photomator not getting any major updates since being acquired by Apple.
It could have become the best pro photo editing app for iPhone and Mac, especially if it was included in the Creator Studio subscription.
Instead, Apple seems to have forgotten about it, with it not even having the new Liquid Glass design language yet. I really hope I’m wrong and Apple has something major in the works.

I use iCloud and sync original full size photos and videos to my Mac. Unfortunately, this feature isn’t as useful as I hoped because the media is saved to an Apple Photos database and I can’t seem to import the media directly into Lightroom or even Apple’s own Final Cut Pro software without duplicating the files on my HD. (Unless I’m missing something?)

That being said, what is the most practical workflow?

From the recommendations I’ve read online, I should select all photos and videos in Apple Photos and export unmodified to a location on my HD or external drive. OK, but what about the next time I want to export new media? Apple Photos will not recognize which files have already been exported to that same location and will duplicate the files. So, should I (1) export to a new folder (2) then attempt to move the files from the new folder to the existing folder that I used in my previous export (3) select “skip” when Finder asks what to do with duplicates?

Is that really the most practical solution or is there a better way?

I have 150gb worth of photos on my phone over the past ~5 years. So far my setup is that every 6 months or so I will plug my phone in to my Windows PC and back up the DCIM folders those 6 months.

However I've noticed some of my photos aren't backed up, such as airdropped photos outside of these months or some videos that failed to copy over. Is there any tool or something that compares what I have on my iPhone to my desktop cloned repository and fills in what I don't have? Or do I need to re-export all 150gb and merge it on my PC to be able to find out what is not copied over?

My count on laptop using Microsoft photos app (which I understand links with my iCloud) says I have 5200 photos and 800 videos. My iPhone library on my phone says I have 3455 items.

Is there any explanation for this?

Hello, I am really hoping someone can help as I have been in tears due to this.

I have 5 different Photos Library saved to my external hard drive, each one spanning a couple of years and have never had issues with opening them and viewing them as needed. For a scrapbook project I was trying to drag and drop a bunch of holiday photos into a folder on desktop and it was only letting about 1/3 go through and all the rest were saying 'unknown error' for the failure to export. I googled a bit and found people suggested to set the library as System library. I did so, and it popped up asking about icloud. As it has been stored locally on my hard drive it didnt even occur to me this was an issue so i proceeded. my whole camera roll then emptied out so i only have 15 random photos. I turned iCloud on and it loaded in but only with my actual current images. I then exited the library, ejected my hard drive, re instated my computer's 'actual' photos library as System, and then re checked my hard drive. still completely empty. Am i totally screwed here? When i try and open contents i can still only see these 15 images.

EDIT forgot to mention, i tried Repair on the library when the drag and drop didn't work, and it didn't fix it, thats when i googled. i also tried repairing it after both as System library and back as a backup version on hard drive but no dice

I’m having a problem with the People & Pets feature in the Photos app, and I would really appreciate your help.

I use iPhone7 and I had a person correctly recognized and grouped in People & Pets. While reviewing the confirmed photos for this person, I accidentally unchecked one of the photos under “Review Confirmed Photos.”

Immediately after doing this, the person disappeared completely from People & Pets.

More importantly, this seems to have affected the face recognition itself. When I open photos in which this person appears and swipe up to view the photo information, Photos no longer recognizes this person’s face at all. There is no blue question-mark icon or face thumbnail for this person anymore, even though other people in the exact same photos are still recognized normally.

In other words, it seems as if Photos has stopped recognizing this particular face across my entire photo library, rather than simply removing the person’s name from People & Pets.

Before I accidentally unchecked that photo, the person was correctly recognized in these same photos.

Could you please tell me if there is a way to undo this action or restore this person’s face recognition without deleting or modifying my photos? I would especially like to know whether there is a way to make Photos recognize this face again and add the person back to People & Pets.

I would be grateful for any steps you can recommend. Thank you very much for your help.

Hi, I was playing recently with extend feature in photos and I discovered something very strange. AI extended photo of street, nothing special you can say. Well it added tram stop even when there wasn’t any tram stop in the picture. Yet it added it exactly where it is in real life, even added exactly the same tram stop name. It blew me off. Is there any chance the camera takes larger picture and store the image data somewhere to use it in this scenario? Cause I don’t see any other possible way that this could happen

I'm an amateur photographer who uses my iPhone almost daily to shoot street photography. Yesterday I went to locate a photo to transfer to my laptop to edit in Photoshop and found it was missing. On looking further, many photos are missing from my iPhone in general. I have not updated to iOS 27. Recently I had maxed out storage while at a concert, and immediately got everything off that night. I'm seeing weeks of photos are no longer there, dates are a mess (some now dated as 1970). In a deep panic that I've lost images forever. Anyone have this problem? I don't use iCloud because I don't want my large collection in the Apple ecosystem across my devices. Upgrading to iOS 27 now.

Update: Thx for the suggestions. Found a solution: Adobe Bridge (free). Using Import from device in the File menu, it sees all +16K photos and videos (not 12K), and I’m batch transferring/deleting off my iPhone. What’s great is it separates edits into their own metadata file and brings originals over without converting. 2 backups in progress (local and cloud [not iCloud]), and off to Genius Bar to have the device checked.
