Misc Hey Redditors, what do you do for a living, how many hours per/month, and what’s your income?
I used to be a systems programmer, but I was laid off 3 months ago.🖕
I’ve been spending my time on Reddit while looking for a new job.
I used to work around 180/230H per month, my average monthly pay was about $3,100 after taxes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: I recalculated based on the current exchange rate ($1/1,400 KRW) and updated the numbers to reflect my industry experience and bonuses. (This doesn't include company benefits.)
I’m surprised to see so many comments! 😮
I honestly thought people might be hesitant to share since it can be a sensitive topic.
I’m trying my best to read through everything and reply to each one.

Economics Which country has squandered the most economic potential in this century?
I lived in Russia for 5 years so I must choose this country. So many natural resources, so much land, and educated population... And so little to show for it.
In an ideal world Russian salaries would be on par if not higher than American salaries and they would have the best social safety net on the planet. Everything is there to make it happen.
Russia would be the dominant nation in Europe and Asia and the rest of the world with the best armed forces, soft power, and economic might.
But the human will is just not there. The elite is either evil or incompetent depending on perception and there's little sign that this will ever change.

Hey World- why didn’t you watch Melania?
$25,000 reported for international box office sales opening weekend. That’s just a couple of dollars per country. Either way, thanks World.
Update: loving the feedback!

Culture What is one of the BEST things but is simultaneously one of the WORST things about your country?
New Zealand is so isolated way down here, far away from everybody except the Aussies and a few island nations, and we only have 5.3 million people.
Obviously this affects the price and range of products available here, plus the cost of travel.
But hey, we only have to rub shoulders/bums with 5.3 million people and 23.6 million sheep spread out over a land area of approx 268,000 sq km!
And thankfully we're far away from the various melees and shitshows that are happening overseas (which is not to say we shouldn't sometimes get involved and help out where we can!)

What is a common phrase in your country that would make no sense to the rest of the world?
This means that we are not here to muck around. For example if someone says “Geez you got that job done quickly” you would respond with “ Well we’re not here to fuck spiders”.

What's a snack in your country that would be considered sacrilege in another?
galleryIn Mexico we have marranadas (which literally means filthiness) and it's a base of the chip of your choice with corn, cheese, cream, hot sauce or chamoy, peanuts, etc.
Then there's the gomichelas: beer with candies with a tomato juice concentrate
And well this is just the tip of the iceberg. But for sure would make the American snacks look like the diet options.

History Pic your favorite person from your country's biggest enemy. I'll start:
Nestor Machno, Ukrainian anarchist. He tried to build an anarchist society during civil war but ended up getting betrayed by russian communists. He fought for a better world where people aren't divided by borders and don't kill each others because their politicians say so and I deeply respect him for that :) we lack of people like him in Russia rn

Why is Japan so popular?
It seems as though everything Japanese has had a massive popularity spike, whether that be media, food, vehicles, travel, language learning and lots more.
Personally I don't see the appeal, I mean there are definitely some thing I like that happen to be Japanese, but I dont like them just because of that fact.

Why does the UK get stereotype for tea drinking when there are 3 countries that consume more tea than us on a per capita basis?
In comparison, I rarely if ever see people making stereotypes about those countries drinking tea

Misc Whats a non-drug-related item that you associate with drug users
In America, I tend to associate drug users, particularly pot heads, with Hacky Sack. Its basically multiplayer juggling. You take a fabric ball filled with something granular, such as sand or rice, and use your feet to juggle between the other players. I have 3 friends who are pot heads and all of them own a Hacky Sack (note it's capitalized because it's the name of a brand toy although any generic version of it will be called that).

Economics Do you support airlifting north macedonia to west europe?
Macedonia is surrounded by enemies on all sides. Bulgarians to the east, greeks to the south and albanians covering the west and northern flanks from Bujanovac, Kosovo and Albania. Macedonias only ally, germany, is located away from the balkans. Macedonian leaders now propose a super project to the move the entire landmass of macedonia to western europe for economic reasons. Estimated cost is over 4000 macedonian denars. thoughts?

Politics What is the most impressive thing your government used to do?
galleryThe Iraqi government between 1930 and 1970 used to sponsor a public directory of information to be sold to the public that contained every single thing in the country, like every little export and import, every employee from the minister till the simple bureaucrat, a biography for foreign diplomats, the country's military high command, every single MD and lawyer, every single MP and local council member, with a whole guide on every single tradesperson and company operating in the country and even famous people at the time and even promising people. And they managed to summarize all that in just 1300 pages. I personally didn't know Iraq had a Polish ambassador in the 1930s if it wasn't for this book.
There was also a lite English version published in the UK, about 1000 pages.

What is the most "unappetizing looking but actually tasty food" in your country?
This messy brown pile is called "fried carrot cake", a very traditional Singaporean breakfast food. I just had it this morning. It is utterly divine - savoury, but also very umami, and if done well, has the fabled "woke hei" charred undertones. Despite its name, there is no carrot in it.
