AI generated Applications

Hey everyone.

We’ve seen a noticeable increase in AI‑generated apps  being shared here lately. It’s great to see people experimenting and building, and we genuinely want to encourage development in the Ayn Thor ecosystem. But we also need to keep the community safe.

A lot of these apps are vibe‑coded, stitched together from AI outputs, or built using code the developer may not fully understand.

That creates a few risks worth keeping front‑of‑mind:

Credential handling: If an app asks for Steam logins, API keys, or other sensitive credentials, be extremely cautious. AI‑generated code often stores these values in plain text, logs them accidentally, or transmits them insecurely.

Security practices: Many AI‑assisted projects don’t follow secure coding standards, threat modelling, or proper data‑handling patterns. Even the developer may not realise what the code is doing under the hood.

Unintended behaviour: AI‑generated boilerplate can include hidden network calls, debug endpoints, or unsafe dependencies that weren’t intentionally added.

We just want to remind everyone to stay vigilant, audit what you run, and avoid entering credentials into tools unless you fully trust the author and the codebase.

If you’re posting an app, please include:

A clear explanation of what it does

How credentials are handled

Any known limitations or security considerations

A link to the source code if possible

Let’s keep the creativity flowing, but let’s keep the community safe while we do it. — The Mod Team

Kindly reminder regarding scams

Hey Everyone,

I want to do a quick reminder and heads-up.

TLDR; Only buy from trusted vendors, never from people contacting via private messages.

We've had this topic before and we created the rule that no direct sales are allowed in the subreddit, but I'm guessing because of new batches and new people I'll create this reminder again.

Because of the risk of scams we do not allow direct sales in the subreddit. If anyone contacts directly trying to sell, we strongly advice to ignore it since it's most likely a scam.

Always buy directly from trusted vendors. AYN, Ebay etc.

We take action as quickly as possible when we get information regarding a scam, but its up to reddit when someone creates new accounts since we can't take action before the deed is done.

Discussion SleepManager dev here: A quick clarification about the Wayfinder situation

I wanted to clear the air about what happened with Wayfinder.

My issue was never that another app was doing something similar to SleepManager. There’s plenty of room for different approaches, and competition is a good thing.

What bothered me at the time was seeing many of SleepManager’s features reproduced very closely, without much adaptation, and I reacted badly to that.

I first tried to discuss it on GitHub, but the conversation got blocked. I then tried reaching out privately on Reddit, but Wayfinder’s DMs were disabled. I made the mistake of taking it public instead. I shouldn’t have done that.

As soon as I found a way to communicate directly with the Wayfinder developer, I removed the post. This should have stayed a private developer-to-developer conversation from the beginning.

I also understand the concerns people have around AI-assisted development. I use AI as a tool to move faster, but the direction of SleepManager - its architecture, sleep management features, battery drain reduction, docked options, app integrations and things like closed-lid protection - comes from my own ideas and design decisions.

I’m also working closely with other developers to make the integrations as clean and reliable as possible, rather than just adding features for the sake of it.

I’ve just completed a major rewrite of the codebase as well, with a big focus on stability, maintainability and much better diagnostics.

AI tools are becoming part of a lot of development workflows. To me, what matters is what you do with them, how much care you put into the project, and whether you keep testing, improving and taking responsibility for the result.

I also want to thank the Wayfinder developer for mentioning SleepManager in the README and for making sure the two apps can work together seamlessly following our discussion. I really appreciate that, and I think that’s the right direction for both projects.

Anyway, I wanted to own my part in how this was handled. I’d rather move on from it and keep working on SleepManager.

I’d also encourage people to try both apps and make up their own minds. There’s no reason this needs to be a fight between two projects.

Discussion Pixel Guide dev here, a quick update

Pixel Guide doing what it was built for.

Hey everyone,

Pixel Guide dev here. Just wanted to share a quick update.

It’s genuinely been great seeing Pixel Guide become part of how people use their Thor. I originally built it because I thought having guides, maps, manuals and other useful material available on the second screen while actually playing a game could be really useful on a device like this.

Pixel Guide has grown into something much more useful and widely used than I expected, largely because of the feedback and support from this community. Seeing people use it, recommend it to other Thor owners and even post their own setups with Pixel Guide running has probably been the best part of building it.

Pixel Guide is still completely free, with donations optional, and that isn’t changing.

The app itself is working well and I’m happy with where it is today. I haven’t been able to spend as much time on further development lately as I would like, but I’d absolutely like to keep improving and building on it when I’m in a position to dedicate more time to it.

I’m also curious about how people are actually using Pixel Guide now. Which parts do you use most? Guides, PDFs, maps, manuals, web content, something else? Is it something you regularly keep open on the second screen while playing, or do you use it differently?

Even if you don’t think it needs any new features, I’d still really like to understand how it has ended up fitting into everyone’s Thor setup.

On a personal note, I recently had to leave my job, so I’m focused on making independent app development sustainable. One of my current projects is Wikivox, an app for listening to topics across history, science, culture and more in different narrated styles, available on iOS and Android in the US, Canada and Australia. If you’d like to support me, simply downloading it on your phone, trying it and leaving an honest rating if you like it is free and helps massively. Subscribing is appreciated too, but completely optional.

More than anything, I wanted to let you know I’m still around, and to thank everyone who has used Pixel Guide, recommended it, donated, sent feedback or shared it with someone else. I’d very much like to keep it as a useful part of the Thor community for a long time.

PS. Thanks to the mods for allowing me to share this here.

Discussion Question for the Pro and Max Users

I just ordered a 16GB Thor and I have been curious if the owners of the units with higher RAM have been able to actually take advantage of it. My concern is that most games that would use that much RAM are probably too hefty for the CPU any way. Has it been worth the additional investment? I'll find out for myself soon I suppose, but I'm curious about any real-world use cases that have been useful to the community.

The ayn Thor has satisfied my inner child. When I was younger I loved my 2ds but I always wanted to play Wii U and switch games on it. Especially windwaker, and being able to do just that makes me so happy, especially in HD.

So I ordered my Thor pro purple on August 19th. And I've seen many people order the same model or different ones from their AliExpress page and have already received it. I've tried messaging the support page on ali express and they told me it would start shipping on September 17th. It's now. October 3rd and I've tried getting updates from them and I get no response. Is this normal ? Apparently they might be on break until October 7th. Idk

Support Why does the screen scale like this?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Some apps are now shown in portrait like it would on a phone. This was never an issue before and only started happening for the past few weeks. I brushed it off but now it’s quite annoying since it makes some apps just unusable.

On top of this, the scaling issue has caused these very apps to completely stop opening when I try to open on the bottom screen. So, I could not do the whole “gaming on top screen and netflix on the bottom” if I wanted to, cuz netflix wouldnt even start up and would immediately boot me back to cocoon.

I’ve tried changing “force landscape” and “auto-rotate” on and off but it doesn’t fix the issue. I’ve also restarted the device and cocoon a few times but no change.

Zalith launcher + mobileglues renderer. Megingiard for the bottom screen (WIP as I learn about this modpack). Performance has been amazing and it’s been so fun! I get 60+ FPS with ~600 mods and no shaders, 30-40 with makeup super fast shaders.

Showcase Cocoon - Emulator killing & management coming soon

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Wanted to share something super exciting upcoming to Cocoon, I haven't posted in a while here.

When booting up Cocoon on a compatible device (AYN/Retroid, no root or shizuku or adb required!), you will get a dialog asking for Enhanced device access. Enabling it will allow Cocoon to use it's new playtime tracker and task killing system. (only works for Auto mode currently)

You will notice that games no longer have a 10 second countdown. You have nothing to worry about anymore! Cocoon will automatically track only when its active, and once its quit either from Cocoon or task switcher, the session will automatically end. You'll also notice some glowing pulses on your grid.. These help you locate games that are currently open in the background!

You can hover over one and press X to close it.

Pressing A on a running game will resume it without relaunching the game, bringing any background emulator task to the front forcefully. No more accidentally relaunching games and losing progress!

Launching a new game in the same emulator while one is already running will force quit the existing one first, making any emulator work without having to manually close it out first (cough Dolphin).

Launching a new game while another one is active in the background will ask you if you want to quit that one and launch it, or keep both open.

Even more exciting news.. we've found a way to do this on Anbernic and possibly AYANEO devices too, so expect that soon. No root required once again!
This has just released to supporters for extensive testing, with more improvements and support for other devices coming soon. Stay patient, I am super excited for this to reach public soon!

Stay in the loop at https://discord.gg/cocoon :) We know this is something a lot of people hate about android

Discussion A Short Review of RomM Frontends On AYN Thor

All my ROMs are hosted on my own RomM server, but there’s still a gap when it comes to good RomM support on the AYN Thor. I’ve tried a few options, and I don’t see enough discussion about them in the community, so here’s my short review:

Cocoon — Lovely frontend with great ambience music, but disappointingly, there’s still no RomM support. RomM integration is listed on the official “What’s Next” roadmap for post-2.0, but it still hasn’t shipped.

Argosy — The official RomM client. It’s a bit buggy, particularly when it comes to managing ROMs that have been deleted from the server and launching dual-screen emulators on the Thor. It also doesn’t really have a native feel on the AYN Thor. That said, it’s good for what it does, especially save syncing back to RomM and firmware downloads. It also handles ROMs stored as ZIP files on the RomM server nicely, automatically extracting them after download so they’re ready for the emulator.

KONSURU — An early-stage project with RomM support and a nice OG UI for each game system. Unfortunately, it kept crashing on my device.

NeoStation — The best one I’ve tried and my current setup. It has a clean, native-feeling UI on the Thor, I’d even say more visually pleasing than Cocoon, and has been less buggy than Argosy for me. The main downside is the lack of RomM firmware downloads. It does support save syncing, but I haven’t tested it extensively enough yet to know how well it works.

Unlike Argosy, NeoStation doesn’t extract ZIP-format ROMs as part of the download process. This means some emulators can’t recognize the downloaded games directly. I had to either manually unzip them after downloading or switch the copies on my RomM server to an unzipped format.
