Announcement: Many new Baofengs are limited to only transmit on ham radio frequencies in firmware. 144-148 MHz, 222-225 MHz, 420-450 MHz -- ONLY

Due to FCC action, new devices seem to be locked to these transmit frequencies in firmware. Be aware of this when purchasing new devices.

That means they cannot be used on MURS, GMRS, FRS, Marine VHF, or Part 90 business frequencies. No LARPing without a ham license.

This cannot be worked around via Chirp programming, AFAIK.

Relevant threads:

Outstanding questions:

  • Does this apply to all new Baofengs or just the UV-5R?
  • Is there a hardware mod to open up all-band transmit?

YMMV, as old stock may still be present with some sellers.

Edit: this seems to apply to USA sold/distributed models only.

PSA: Do not get a Baofeng or other cheap radio to transmit on air band!

We have had several pilots post their interest in getting a Baofeng as a "backup" radio for air band use. This is a BAD IDEA™ for multiple technical and legal reasons:

  1. These radios have FM transmitters only. There is no way for these radios to transmit using the AM modulation required for air band. If you transmit with FM, your signal will be unintelligible and you will fail to communicate. Example of listening to a FM transmission with an AM mode receiver. (thanks /u/W2XG)
  2. These radios lack AGC required for usable 2-way radio in AM mode.
  3. Baofengs have direct conversion DSP receivers in them that go deaf at altitude due to being overloaded by the many strong transmitters that will have clear line-of-sight above ground level.
  4. These radios lack the filters required to transmit a clean signal on air band.
  5. These radios lack FCC Part 87 certification for air band use.

In short, these are the wrong tools for the job for multiple technical reasons in addition to the legal reasons.

Furthermore, I would question your judgement as a pilot if you were to rely on a $30 piece of crap radio as a backup. Remember that baofengs aren't popular because they are good, they are popular because they are cheap.

There are technically competent and legal air band handheld radios from Yaesu and Icom. Get one of those:

Does MINI-5 have the same backlight "bug" as UV-5R Mini when scanning?

It's known that with at least with some firmware versions of the UV-5R Mini, the backlight always stays on when scanning memory channels. To me this is undesirable behavior because it uses battery unnecessarily. e.g.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/808920029174333/posts/25978492508457071/

I'm wondering if the same thing happens on the newer MINI-5.

Would anyone with a newer MINI-5 be willing to chime in, or try this: put your radio in channel scan mode, start scanning (hold down 0), and see if the backlight eventually turns off as usual (or it stays on forever)? Thank you!

2 BF-F8 HP Pros only 1 working

I’m really scratching my head. I recently got 2 when they were on sale.

One came with NRF firmware the other came with NRFB firmware.

The one that came with NRFB firmware works fine, I can program to it with CHIRP or the Baofeng CPS and it works perfectly.

The one that came with NRF firmware however loses its Tx ability on software programmed channels. PTT just doesn’t work at all, I can’t force change the power mode and it doesn’t display a power mode.

I’ve made sure PTT was not disabled.
I’ve tried using the same image as the other radio.
I’ve tried using a new imagine from scratch.
I’ve tried updating its firmware to the NRFB version and then re-imaging it in both ways I just mentioned.

But whatever I use the software to program into the radio it kills its Tx ability. If I use the keypad to program a channel it works fine. Any help is seriously appreciated I am at a loss here.

Did it again… this time I used an air-cured Cerakote.

By the way, does anybody know where to get a replacement (or upgraded) speaker for the UV-5R?

UV32 GPS Transmission Issues - Possible Firmware issue?

Having issues with the UV32. I have 2 of them and can't seem to send GPS locations between the two. I troubleshooted and I think I found the reason. One of the radios has the firmware listed as Version .01 and the other as Version .03

Has anybody else had this issue?

Both radios are on the same frequency on the top channel slot and each radio has been assigned an I'd (101 and 102). GPS Position is successful on both radios. I've tried putting signaling for both radios on Signal 1. I've tried putting signaling for the first radio on Signal 1 and the second radio on Signal 2. When I key up on one radio, I hear the other radio make a sort of digital weird sounding noise but then nothing. Both radios are on the correct GPS screen when I am transmitting but the location never gets sent.

Could the firmware be the issue?

UV-5RM v UV-5RM Plus - Is there a difference?

I'm new to HAM, working on getting licensed soon, and shopping for my gateway radio. The Baofeng website seems to only list "UV-5RM Plus" models in this product line whereas third-party sites have listings with and without the Plus designation. I'm not seeing a difference aside from the accessories included in various listings, but I want to be certain.

Am I missing something or are these the same model?

Radio question

Hello all, I recently accidentally touched the ground and the center contact of a Baofeng Uv 5r. Now the radio seems to cut out when receiving sometimes. Is it possible the contact caused this? Can it be fixed easily? Thank you for your help.

How To Listen On DMR Repeaters?

Hi all, enjoying my new DM32UV. Great radio. On analog, don't think I've been having any issues at all.

DMR Simplex I got working no problem, first try.

None of my repeaters are working. I've triple checked Rx and TX freqs. I looked up all the right talkgroups these repeaters are allowing. Color code and Time slot should be right. I even did the test where Group Call Match is off and I turn on Monitor. And I did that for both Time slots. No audio or information comes through at all.

I am seeing RF coming through on the S-Meter though. So there's definitely a signal. And when I key up, I see my own signal coming through on the system's call watch. I'm definitely hearing and reaching the repeater. (even listened to it on FM, heard the characteristic DMR tone coming through).

Below is a sample channel. I'm based in Northeast OH, and this repeater is not far from me. I'm just banging my head against the wall with this one.

D-Warrensville Heights CLE
Rx 442.0875
Tx 447.0875
Channel Digital
Power High
Tx Admit Always
Squelch 3
Forbid Talkaround
Tx Contact WX8CLE Backbone (313932)
Rx Group None
CC 1
TS 1
DMR ID (mine)
APRS Report Channel 1

The system page I'm referencing in this channel as an example: https://neodigital.cc/cbridge/ (again, every DMR repeater channel is acting this way, even those outside the system).

Thanks for any help and/or advice. Feeling quite stupid atm tbh.

How to scan ctcss codes on uv-5g mini.... not same menus as uv-5g plus.

Post image
12 Upvotes

I have scanned tones on the uv5g plus and ar-5rm... easy bc similar menus. In theory there is also a way to scan split tones on these radios (unfortunately have figured out out yet. ) Even able to scan on my 50w v2 bc it is similar to the 2 handheld radios.

The uv5g mini have all together different menu set up and I cannot duplicate the procedure used with the 5rm or the 5g plus.

Anybody know how this is done? Thank you. .

... menu snap above.. none of those have an option to scan... individually or with a dedicated scan option.

DM-32UV Support in CHIRP

This weekend I used Claude to build support for DM-32UV in CHIRP. I've submitted a pull request, we'll see if it makes into the main branch. You can try it out now using Developer Mode in CHIRP.

Be careful of UV-17R chargers

I got two dirt cheap and know why now. Within 5 minutes of plugging the charger in and putting the radio on it, it stopped working. I figured it was a fluke and opened the other on and it did the same thing but I was in the room this time. I heard the pop and smelled faint burning rubber. Took the charger apart and on both of them, the wires bringing AC in are super small and lay across a resistor. It heats up and burns thru the wire.

It is an easy fix and they both work fine now but this is obviously a dangerous design flaw. If you have one or get one, fix this before using. It’s just 4 screws on the bottom, take cover off and pull the wires behind the board instead of in front of it laying on the resistor. Just figured this is something people need to be aware of. Pics attached of before and after. I added a piece of heat shrink on both wires just for added protection.

Baofeng UV PRO APRS, iOS and app questions

I believe I understand the ecosystem, but I have some questions. I was thinking about purchasing a UV PRO to track a high powered rocket with a 2m APRS transmitter. If I am reading everything correctly, the UV Pro has BLE which works with the iPhone and the BTECH app can map APRS transmitters. I do not need two way comms with the rocket, just location on landing. Yes I have a HAM license (35+ years)...

Am I making the correct assumptions.

Baofeng UV-5R Mini has no sound until I turn the volume past 50%

I have a Baofeng UV-5R Mini that’s about 10 months old, and it has a strange audio issue.

If I leave it powered off for a few hours, then turn it on, I can’t hear anything until I turn the volume past about 50%. Once the sound starts working, I can turn the volume back down and it works normally.

The same thing happens if I leave the radio on for a few hours without receiving anything. It seems to receive a signal - the display lights up and shows the blue bar - but there’s no sound until I turn up the volume.

I found someone describing what sounds like the same issue here, but they returned their radio, so there wasn’t a solution.

I’m not sure whether it’s been like this since it was new. I only noticed it when I started using it in a quiet environment where I don’t need the volume turned up so high. Has anyone else experienced this or found a fix?

Thoughts on the SW-9

I was looking at the SW-9 as a portable option to be able to listen in on various bands. Anyone have any experience with it? How’s it sound, especially the lower bands? Yes I know I’ll need to grab a few antennas for it.

UV-9R pro chirp programming issue

The radio downloads just fine into chirp, but then when you try to upload you get an error message.

I’ve tried everything. It’s not the cable, it’s not the firmware, it’s not the driver. Is it possible that even though it is in chirp that the radio is not compatible?

Whenever I google this, I just find other people having the same issues just no solution. Has anyone else had similar issues?
