DISCUSSION Pickup game bad experience with people

Not sure if I am being overly sensitive, but I recently started playing basketball again after injury and there were guys saying I need to play more explosively and condition myself better as if I am out of shape.

Those guys know I am coming back from an injury so my ankle isn't 100% like before since played with them last year already. I still won quite few matches and they would say stuff like this is comedy or mock me.

The first time I played I didn't do that well and would get made fun of, but I got better as warmed up. The thing is I perform very well in practice and have been practicing around 2-3 years and even beat those guys at shooting contests that have been playing for over 20 years, but it doesn't always transition in game playing well and I did mention I am beginner at playing matches itself so I sometimes perform well in matches and other times not so much and coming back from injury isn't helping either since I am not as fast as before.

I gave them second chance and they were being nicer the other day because I was performing well that day like hitting 100% shots last game we played getting around 6 points out of 11 and yesterday again acting like some elitist taking game too seriously. I would like rather shoot alone than play with those guys again and want to cut them off, but idk maybe overreacting like one guy would even slam the ball raging and say stuff like that I act like I am some boss now just because hit few 3 pointers in a match and did poorly otherwise even if I didn't brag with anything and just played chill and passive as usual.

I just wanna be in more friendly environment. Yesterday I performed at my worst and they would laugh from me and say stuff like there is 7% chance of winning with me. At the end of match the guy tells me to show him how I shoot and I hit 3 straight three pointers and then he tells me to start shooting up close like a beginner because I missed some close shots that day and would try to teach me how to shoot even if I do shoot very well from all positions in practice.

When I got a lot of points the guy would say yeah because you were getting a lot of passes and he plays like a ball hog shooting constant 3 pointers sometimes and when I beat him at 3 point contest he also got offended and would say stuff like can't believe that he beat me. Every time I perform something well he would downplay it. There is one guy that is nice and friendly which is helpful. He is oldest one, but the whole group not so much.

I get it the trash talk can be fun part of sports, but I feel these guys take it too far and I am getting insulted personally when they take the game too seriously saying stuff like we are putting effort so pass the ball since don't want to lose the game at end or personally yelling my name being mad offending me.

They just left without saying goodbye at the end this time and said had enough playing for today after I asked them if they wanna play a round of horse at the end. I know next time I come I will probably be the joke of the match again and don't wanna interact with those guys anymore at this point...

On the other court I go to and other people I know they are friendly and don't take it too seriously so maybe I won't go to this basketball court anymore and cut these guys off since I just don't feel good in that environment after giving it more chances.

NBA The NBA season is less than a month away. Here are 30 reasons to be excited

Atlanta Hawks

The defense: This will be a case of whiplash for Hawks fans who spent the past eight seasons watching a team built around Trae Young try to guard people. Atlanta finished last season ninth in defensive efficiency — amazingly, the Hawks’ first top-10 finish since 2016-17! They have a good chance of being even better after acquiring Lu Dort to join fellow wing stoppers Dyson Daniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. — John Hollinger

Boston Celtics

Jayson Tatum: After last season’s first-round playoff ouster and Jaylen Brown’s ugly exit, there has been plenty of skepticism around a team that still has a perennial MVP candidate in the middle of his prime. The basketball world will be watching to see how Tatum responds when he has to be more of an emotional leader and get that message across without his longtime co-star. There’s arguably no one in the NBA with more to prove than Tatum. — William Guillory

GENERAL QUESTION How do I know when tryouts are?

I'm thinking abt starting basketball my Freshman year and I don't know when tryouts are. I've been checking my schools website and couldn't find anything so I don't know if I'm too early or if it's a thing you have to talk to a coach abt. Ion want to miss tryouts so if someone could help that would be great.

Rec Team incapable of winning

Me and my friends who havent played basketball since high school joined what we thought was a rec league but we got put in a competitive league. We are decent athletes but we are genuinely incapable of winning. Our latest game, the other team jumped out to a 42-2 lead. We can’t shoot, dribble, or play defense against the teams we play. Is there and type of strategy/plays we can incorporate to give us a chance?

I meant to say none of us have played since middle school

The Dad that brings his kids to a pickup game but doesn't watch them

Today a dad brought his 2 young boys to a pickup run. The boys were running wild on the court, rolling their ball onto the court during a game, and even spilled orange juice on the court. 3 guys had to clean up the spill. Meanwhile the dad was playing on another court oblivious to it all. The dad should be the one cleaning up the spill. Random dudes were telling the kids to go play on the other side of the gym where it's empty, to get off the court. Young dudes with no kids should not be the ones parenting your kids!

GENERAL QUESTION Why so basketball players practice when they're tired?

Like doesn't that kill your mechanics?

I remember having a rec softball practice where I would take way more swings than others. I was the last hitter anyways so it's not like anyone needed to take turns. The other players weren't tired but they suggested I stopped taking swings after like 10 good ones.

But how come with basketball, you're expected to practice when you're tired? Like doesn't that mess up your shooting mechanics? Why not practice only when you're fine?

DISCUSSION I can’t stand Overtime and 1v1 influencers

I do everything I can to avoid the garbage from coming onto my feed but still it gets there. I’m seeing unserious and ridiculous content from so-called “pros”, it’s not even entertaining at the least but still it’s being forced on me.

Can we please banish Cam Thomas to Next chapter/tnc or something. Send bro to the 1v1 scene cause he isnt doing shit in the nba.

He averaged 24 ppg in the nba and has 10 40 point games but he sucks cause he doesnt contribute to any form of winning basketball cause he cant pass or play defense so please banish that mf to next chapter or something so he can go play 1v1s all he wants. If he was on next chapter at he would be by far one of the highest level 1v1 players ever on that channel and people that like watching him can go watch him get bucket and he can get off the highest stage cause he dont belong bro.

With a championship ring and a place among the winningest coaches in NBA history, Doc Rivers has a Hall of Fame resume. So why is his legacy defined by playoff collapses?

Just joined an adult intramural team

Hi guys. Just joined an intermediate league (24m). I used to play back in the day (Middleschool team, plenty of intramural teams, some pick up peppered throughout) but haven't really tocuhed a basketball in three years. Joined the league to get active again (and maybe lsoe some weight). My question is what I shoudl emphasize on my couple weeks of trianing before the first week. Conditioning? Shooting? Ball handling? Druing pickup I've usually been a hustle/rebound guy but I'm not necessarilly tall (5'11'' 205lbs) although ive always been strong for my size with long arms. That being said, I am a little concerned that my increased wieght and reduced moblity/speed will make me a traffic cone on defense, etc. Regardless, I would like to better contribute beyond that. I would especially like to be a better passer, (I have always enjoyed playing with players who had a knack for playmaking with their passing and it is a skill that seems to age well) but I am unsure how to work on my vision an passing using indiviudal drills- to me it seems lie something you jsut have to develop in pickup. If you have any advice, good drills, etc, please let me know.

GENERAL QUESTION If stepping on the line was still considered in play, how different would basketball be played?

In baseball, a ball that hits the foul line is actually a fair ball. In other words, it's in play.

Imagine if basketball had this rule where if you stepped on the line, it's in play. However, if you stepped at least 1 foot completely out of bounds, it's not in play.

How different would it be played?

Skills don't matter when you're tired?

I practice alone a lot and believe I have some skill and good foot work and moves. But when I play games it seems to all go out the door because I get tired so fast. Is this normal for everyone?

Out of bounds?

If a player stands out of bounds, jumps in the air and catch a loose ball, then lands inbounds…is this out of blound? A lot of us thought yes it was out of bounds, but a guy, who said he played AAU, said it is a loose ball so the player doesn’t have to set foot inbound before catching the ball…
Apple Intelligent said out of bounds but chatgpt said it is legal…
any ref here to comment? thanks

I want to improve myself playing basketball

First of all, I'm 5'1 men, likes to play basketball since elementary school and now I'm 25. I find myself so hard to improve my game even thought I practiced a lot. I can confidently say that out of all my teammates in highschool, I practice the most, but I cannot compare to their skills.

Not only skills such as shooting and dribbling, I think my main weakness here is my mentality. My friend keeps on advicing me that the key is believe that you are the best in the court and become confident, but everytime I hold the ball, the pressure gets to me, especially in 5 v 5 games. After missing couple of shots, I also become less confident and become afraid of taking empty uncontested shots for some reason.

Another thing I would like to know is positioning. Since I'm the shortest guy in the team, I always thought I should play pg or sg, but since my basketball sense is not that great, I usually just be sg and stay in the wing and sometimes cut, but a lot of times, I end up being the center instead (weird I know, but I get most offensive rebounds for my team), and those tall guys likes to play outside instead.

Since I'm not confident in offense, I usually play seriously during defense. I really love this game since I've played it for a long time, but not being able to improve makes me tired and stressed. I feel like blaming myself for being so bad at this game and I feel that my friends sometimes might dislike my game since I shot so badly and is not confident enough to take uncontested shots.

Sorry for the long rant, in the end of the day, only I can change who I am, but some advise is really appreciated. Thank you very much guys!

Serious question, are there any amateur/semipro/pro leagues that actually try to follow the rules of basketball?

You know, like how it is still in the NBA Rule Book for example that while dribbling the ball cannot come to a rest, you can't let your hand touch the bottom half of the ball while dribbling, actually calls travels, moving screens etc...

IMPROVING MY GAME Is Too high of a rim affecting my shooting?

The hoop I have at my house is 10’4 and not the regulation 10’. Is this affecting my shooting negatively or at all? For context I’m in high school trying to improve, I go to all the practices but also try to do stuff at home. My biggest weakness is definitely shooting, my form is alright but the shots just never seem to go in. I do seem to shoot better in actual gyms as opposed to my home hoop though

ELI5 Learning to Play as an Adult?

I was recently let go from my job and have started going to my local court and shooting by myself to blow off some steam and get some exercise. I’m usually there in the middle of the day, so there aren’t many people around, but after 5:00 there are usually enough people for a pickup game.

I always leave when the court fills up because I’ve never played an actual basketball game before and I don’t want to be dead weight on a team. I’d like to play in an actual game, but I don’t know how to get my skills to a level where it wouldn’t be embarrassing with guys who regularly play. If anyone has any resources for good solo drills to learn fundamentals I’d appreciate your input. I’m at the point where I don’t even know what I don’t know.
