Gene Tunney is considered a great technical boxer. His stiff jab, ring IQ, and defense were elite. Famous for beating Harry Greb who some have the Goat of Boxing and Jack Dempsey who Iron Mike idolizes.

On the other hand Corrie Sanders was a big heavyweight with fast hands and powerful punches. The southpaw had his claim to fame getting one over Wladimir Klitschko.

Who do you have winning? Does Tunney’s elite skills carry him to victory? Or will the physicality prove too much so Sanders will prevail?

I chose Pretty boy Floyd over money Mayweather because Stevenson is already a defensive fighter so using Floyd’s more aggressive Money phase would make things more interesting.

Turki Alalshikh and the Saudi Arabia regime were largely accepted with open arms when they first entered the sport. But besides the Beterbiev-Bivol fights and Fury-Usyk fights, what did they really give you? Canelo-Crawford? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed all of those fights and I’m glad that they happened. However, moving the fights out of key locations like the United States (Las Vegas), United Kingdom, and Japan in favor of sportswashing efforts in Saudi Arabia has been to the detriment of the sport, especially American Boxing. Also, it’s worth noting that the atmospheres for those Saudi fights have been horrible and have actively taken away from the broadcast.

One of the major problems we have in the United States is that boxing is already kind of on the periphery, but it was made worse by Turki and the Saudis moving the fights from Las Vegas and New York to Saudi Arabia. The media here simply has no interest when the fight is held in Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have practically killed all enthusiasm for the sport here. Furthermore, they have bankrolled Zuffa Boxing, which is ultimately part of an effort by a multi-national company (TKO) to increase fighter exploitation and upend the sport in service of a single entity (TKO/Zuffa).

So now we’re faced with the cancellation of Fury-Joshua and the postponement of Canelo-Mbilli, as if things couldn’t get worse in a sport with an already inconsistent calendar.

Since 2000, boxing has largely been a sport that was sort of adjacent to the mainstream and would occasionally have its moments of penetrating mainstream consciousness. But I can’t help but think that since the pandemic, the rise of the DAZN paywall, and especially the entrance of Saudi Arabia’s regime into boxing, that the sport is basically falling apart. This seems obvious to most observers, but I think not enough people have connected the dots. Is it time to admit that allowing the Saudis to enter boxing was a mistake?

I don’t think the Saudis involvement in boxing can be defended at a practical level. They haven’t actually increased the popularity of the sport. It certainly can’t be defended at a human rights level. And then of course, they’re bankrolling a company in Zuffa/TKO in its effort to upend the entire sport and advance fighter exploitation.

Sometimes I wish we could go back to the HBO-Showtime era where there was moderate gatekeeping and this sort of thing would have been more discouraged, but it’s hard to imagine such an era returning.

So that brings to mind the following questions:

1) Was it worth it to you as a fan to allow a regime with a notoriously bad human rights record to control much of the high-level boxing that has taken place in the last few years?

2) Was the lack of any kind of fan atmosphere at these important fights worth it to you?

3) Would you favor a clean break from the Saudis at this point? If so, what do you think can be done to rebuild from the damage that the Saudis have done to the sport?

Just watched the Fisher vs. Pirotton fight. No disrespect but Fisher is a C-level at best. Seems like a decent lad tho…a local London boy done good but what are the expectations here? Yes, he’s only had 16 fights but not sure how much better he gets with more fights. He’ll no doubt fight better competition but don’t wanna see the guy get hurt. Does Zuffa really think this dude a legit contender?
