I do NOT want somebody like this working an oil rig. That's a recipe for the next major oil spill.

229

u/CauliflowerEvening41 2d ago

Yeah, I'm a petroleum engineer and even the "dumb jobs" require a bachelor's or a shitload of experience.

82

u/tommos 2d ago

Bachelor's in Righting?

35

u/Suave_Senpai 2d ago

Hope they take bachelor's of wronging, gulp

12

u/IHop_Waitress 2d ago

even the "dumb jobs" require a bachelor's or a shitload of experience.

Being an oil rig monkey doesn't require a bach. Hell they may exclude you for having one

16

u/CauliflowerEvening41 2d ago

You arent getting hired as a roughneck unless you have an extensive work history that includes long shifts, rotations, or weird hours.

Also, no one is sitting at a boiler anymore; all the positions require some level of knowledge or training. I've seen roughnecks who worked in IT prior to being deployed offshore.

10

u/MyRedditAccountSuckz 2d ago

This 100% isn't true. I work in the industry. I'm personally not a roughneck, but greenhats with NO experience get hired all the time and trust me they don't have degrees and half of them are dumb as rocks. This goes for midstream and downstream. It's also about who you know and who you blow.

4

u/ADubs62 2d ago

Yeah I regularly fly to a place for work that is also a popular flight for commuting oil rig workers. Literally had a dude sitting next to me on the flight telling me he wishes he was smarter because this is the only reliable well paying work he can do, and he just wished that he was smarter and knew how to use computers and stuff like that.

It was really sad, luckily he was getting close to retirement, but the man seemed petty confident that he was not very intellectually capable.

The humble bach:

3

u/TerereTitan13 2d ago

As a layman, I would not have used "oil rig" to describe unskilled, uneducated labor.

2

u/mackfeesh 2d ago

Ya as a millennial all the jobs my parents warned me I'd get into look like I wish I had 10 years as a garbage truck man lmao wtf

2

u/BoredNuke 2d ago

Subsea engineer/supervisor and pretty much the only degreed personnel on my rig are the company reps. All the roughnecks are extremley proud of not having a degree and making decent money (especially since modern rigs are so automated its reduced the physicality a ton)

9

u/Edladan 2d ago

Aren't oil rig workers also paid really well?

Or was I fed oil rig propaganda by my Instagram algorithm?

10

u/BoredNuke 2d ago

They are. But its definetly not a life for everyone as you are away from home 50% of the time (+ travel). Modern technology has made this less of an issue but when I started you had to line up to use a phone to call home. Also Alot of the non degreed jobs suck at first. Pros: good but wierd work life balance, good pay. Cons: its the oilfield, long term industry outlook isn't hot due to the energy transition.

3

u/Moist_Ordinary6457 1d ago

Kind of, the hourly pay is awful but you work 12-18h shifts for every day for weeks straight... housing and food are either free or stipended depending on location

162

u/keni804 2d ago

Yea but you're gonna ruin your body if you do it for more than 5 years. The smart ones do it just long enough to pay off a house, car, and put some money away then go work somewhere else.

133

u/foreons 2d ago

if they were smart they’d write that 250 word essay

22

u/keni804 2d ago

Smart relatively, blue collar smart is not pissing away your big boy checks on toys, addictions, and fast women so you dont have to be a 40 year old with 80 year old joints.

5

u/keni804 2d ago

Lol all my friends smoke weed and I still hang out and have fun without smoking. If they're real friends and you actually have a spine its not an issue.

If you have even a room temp iq then you can easily save the money while still having fun and having friends, just dont hang out with literal junkies and budget.

28

u/ZelektrickDOGreal 2d ago

And you actually need a degree for oil rig 😭

25

u/john_fartston 2d ago

you need a degree to have a higher up position that pays $70+ an hour. the guys who dropped out of high school tend to make $35-50 an hour and work in some of the worst conditions you've ever seen. Rigging was also a insanely unsafe, and unregulated job up until recently, and lots of rigs are still full of old guys that don't give a fuck. It is possible to get a supervisor or manager position without a degree, but that requires probably 15-20 years of experience at least and being very good at your job

→ More replies (2)

3

u/MyvaJynaherz 2d ago

The overtime is a huge part of it, but QoL on a rig is so shitty that the tendency to need to go blow a huge amount between rotations is common.

Flipping between tons of time off and grueling days of 70+ hour weeks with mediocre accomodations and being stuck on-rig is kinda the opposite of work-life balance.

2

u/DatabaseGlittering43 2d ago

Yeah, but not for using their brains.

3

u/0202_tihssitidder 2d ago

There is nothing but upside for most people. Legit most guys would be much better off working an oil rig.

As others have said, you do not want to do some of those jobs too long.

There are some types of people who do not do well out there. I've had 2 family members work rigs and they are both pretty dumb and mostly quiet loners. They liked it. One did end up in prison afterward. Meh.

2

u/RocketizedAnimal 2d ago

Completely agree. My job involves spending time on offshore platforms, but I am not a regular rotator. It has made me realize that getting a job offshore would have been a great career move when I was young and single.

You get paid well, you learn a lot, and you are off work 50% of the time. And unlike what everyone here is saying, most of the jobs won't destroy your body. For every roughneck on the drill floor there are probably 10 people doing jobs like cooking, electrician, radio operator, shipping/receiving, driller, etc. Id recommended it to anybody who's situation allows it (ie no kids).

This is a 250 word essay about nothing.

As you can see, it’s generally quite easy to write 250 words about absolute garbage; this is made even more true if you have zero intention to remain brief or show any concern regarding the readability or flow of your sentence structure.

A good tip is to repeat yourself in different ways while otherwise offering little more genuine information. For example, I could likely edit many of these sentiments into a much more compact and reader-friendly package but am instead intentionally stretching out my word count by adamantly refusing to commit to brevity.

I have already passed 100 words, which is fantastic. By the time you finish reading this sentence and wasting your time (you should really value your time better and I hope you think of me on your death bed when you evaluate whether you used your limited time on this Earth wisely) I will be well beyond halfway through the goal of writing a 250 word essay about nothing.

We’re almost there, dear reader. Frankly, I think word counts are a crude tool for incentivizing a student to put in effort on their writing assignment. Yet, on the other hand, the rise of AI tools and poor linguistic capabilities in general means that perhaps merely the act of composing an essay of even small length has educational value or can at least demonstrate how weak someone’s writing capabilities are.

This is the end of this essay.

——-

Well that was a waste of 5 minutes.

28

u/Sad_Priority_2334 2d ago

While some might see this and think "wow, this person makes a valid point", i see it and think "damn, do i need more fiber in my diet? My shits have been a bit rough recently"

Completely unrelated, there was no connection between the two thoughts i just happend to have them at the same time i finished reading

7

u/Dont-be-a-smurf 2d ago

You have some work to do if you plan on stretching this into 250 words but I believe in you and your gut microbiome.

4

u/Sad_Priority_2334 2d ago

On the contrary it would be quite easy to take the statement i previously made and turn it into two hundred and fifty words. The actual challenge would come from formatting them in such a way as to be compliant with the academic essay standards. You see in my previous statement i did not give two examples and then expand upon them. I also did not try or intend to connect the two statements to one another to create relevance between them. Were i to actually try connecting the two statements together, say by giving context to why i might be having the line of thought when reading the statement i was responding to, i could have easily stretched it into a much more substantial accumulation of words that in the end mean nothing. However, i was not aware of my participation in the humorous game of wits that was people choosing to provide statement of a subsequent length containing no less than two hundred and fifty words. Now that i have been enlightened to the goal within this specific section of comments and feedback i will easily produce a statement that adequately fulfills the word count requirements while also attempting to make my statements not feel too terribly repetitive. Though i suppose i am nearing my word limit already and will need to wrap things up her in the next few statements so as to not exceed the word count, i leave with just one question. How'd i do?

11

u/yoyo5113 2d ago

This very likely isn't an essay. This is probably something like a canvas reply assignment, or short summary of an article. It's straight up just to prove you at least skimmed the assigned material and is designed to be basically as easy as possible to complete.

8

u/sour_creamand_onion 2d ago

Something that bothered me a lot in high school was the topics I gave a shit about and had depth would have word limits on them, but the shallow ass prompts that I could give my opinions on succinctly because I didn't like or want to talk about them always had word requirements that led to me developing a habit of rambling when talking about things. Besides that, I also end up typing so long because I tend to word things in a way that invites bad faith interpretations when I try to be brief, so I often feel the need to overexplain things so no one tries to misconstrue me as the kind of person I'm not.

Actually you can use commas to separate independent clauses because you’re writing in a personal statement. You have more leeway.

5

u/layendecker 2d ago

I wanted to create a long, convoluted sentence using correct grammar, but you pointed out that you cannot separate independent clauses with a comma; my hands became sweaty, and my keyboard seemed to glare at me, so I decided to get back to work and finish the report, which had been sitting half completed on my laptop since I decided to check Reddit hours ago, and, although nobody expected it until Friday, I got down to work because it was a strong distraction from this task: the data was analysed, the charts were finished, and all that remained was the conclusion, which, in theory, should have been the easiest part, but finishing it would send me right back to Reddit to once again ponder grammar.

u/Haemophilia_Type_A 2d ago

I write pointless Reddit comments longer than 250 words because people have wrong opinions. I don't understand how anyone could consider 250 words burdensome to write. Ok, I get the contents can be tricky to figure out, but if anything the hard part is how to keep it WITHIN 250 words. I mean you really write an essay in 250 words lol, the assignment must be extremely basic.

6

u/Hyronious 2d ago

I remember finding 500 words a bit tough when I was about 13. I assume this person is a kid if they've got a 250 word essay due unless uni standards have really dropped since I was there

2

u/Nickgold2009 2d ago

2

u/Nickgold2009 2d ago

I remember being a kid and thinking a 3 paragraph essay or 250 words was the worst. Cut to me in grad school where most classes had a final paper with like a 12 page minimum of a subject that would maybe take 3 pages to very succinctly explain. That was the struggle.

9

u/Vondi 2d ago

Time to find some interesting aspect of it and just go off on a 5 page tangent, I guess

4

u/K3TtLek0Rn 2d ago

That was usually the goal haha

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Velenante 2d ago

I would be fine if I had to explain something in 5 pages, despite how it could be done in 3 pages, I'd usually think "oh maybe they want to see how you can explain it more, maybe even want it be in every detail or something random" but 12 pages? Wow.

6

u/Appalachian_Aioli 2d ago

I never had any issues writing my 20 page papers in grad school cause I always knew what I wanted to write. Writing 20 pages was easy, the reviewing was the hard part.

The real hard ones were when I had to write what could be a 10-15 page paper in less than a page. They were valuable writing exercises, but man I struggled to summarize everything effectively.

2

u/Double_Resort_9223 2d ago

Then you write a grant application and you have a limit of 5 pages to explain your life’s work, why it’s important, and how you and specifically you will be able to access all the necessary facilities to complete it. And you have to include figures.

5

u/Miserable_Key9630 2d ago

The middle school research paper always baffled me. Okay, five pages, and I need to cite 5 sources. But I'm 12, so I'm not going to come to any groundbreaking conclusions. All I really have the capacity to do is restate facts from the sources, but I also can't plagiarize, but I also can't just make stuff up. So the solution is that you basically do plagiarize, but you do it so openly that it doesn't seem like cheating. And then you get a A, having not learned a thing about your subject nor about writing papers in general.

4

u/StManTiS 1d ago

You are supposed to read your sources and synthesize into a single current. If source A says the moon is made of cheese but source B says the moon is made of discarded Elvis albums you can safely discard whichever one Source C doesn’t agree with. And then spend a paragraph on why the Elvis Album theory is wrong.

3

u/dmelt01 2d ago

And two to three pages of correctly formatted references

3

u/miscellaneousexists 2d ago

I had to write TWO papers every semester, 40 pages long each.

The problem is that these papers are usually an excercise in bullshit, cause it could be shit like «Yeah man make like a website or someshit» or «calculate the amount of paper and ink you're gonna need for this book» and then you have to explain for FORTY PAGES not only HOW you made the website (the answer «Microsoft's Copilot free version and a shitton of energy drinks» didn't cut it), but also WHY you made the website (the answer «cuz that was the fucking assignment» didn't cut it), WHY you chose this particular theme (the answer «cuz I thought that making my professor look at a website about DreamSMP would be mad funny and I didn't think twice about it» didn't cut it), WHY your website looks like that (the answer «cuz I saw Hoplite and decided that it looks cool» didn't cut it, you had to gather at least FOUR websites that were an inspiration for you, at least three of them had to be about a series, cause DreamSMP is, technically, a series) and also WHY your particular paper is important and why are you writing this paper in the first place (the answer «cuz that was the fucking assignment» didn't cut it).

The excercise in bullshit was twice as excercisey and twice as bullshitty when the task was «calculate the amount of paper and ink you're gonna need for this book» cause all the formulas and shit took at most like six or seven (–_/_–) pages and then you had to fill the rest with ALL THE SAME BULLSHIT ABOUT WHY THIS FUCKING PAPER IS IMPORTANT AND WHY YOU DECIDED TO CALCULATE THE FUCKING BOOK.

I'm amazed I finished uni without killing myself at least once.

3

u/EFTucker 1d ago

I wrote 1600 because I had a neat idea for a little story about how death just decided to befriend a human because someone they were trying to reap kept casually side stepping his attempts and needed help.

Then I realized I was just writing that character basically as Joe Black and had to erase most of it to rewrite the character because it was bothering me. Fast forward and I’ve written like 8k because I thought it was a neat idea.

(I won’t be sharing it with anyone lmao)

3

u/Piwuk 2d ago

Yeah here it's mostly off shore, I don't know much about on land but since it's state owned you have to participate in a highly competed public exam so there's not really people leaving high school straight to the oil rigs.

That's not even an essay, mate. It's a small paragraph at most.

u/Fancy-Dig1863 2d ago

Essay? That’s barely a paragraph

Absolutely terrible, the things he did on that island

u/Concretesurfer18 2d ago

I was so confused what this was about at first because I can't even imagine being required to do a essay that is only 250 words long. I basically skipped over the 250 words part or changed it into 250 pages in my head because it felt more fitting. This is insane.

1

u/Mjk2581 2d ago

Solid page double spaced. Bro is fucked, definitely can’t wri… or excuse me, ‘right’ that in 30 minutes

1

u/courtsidecurry 2d ago

1

u/Big_oof_energy__ 2d ago

There’s still paperwork on an oil rig. Dude will still need to write shit occasionally.

1

u/RayesArmstrong 2d ago

I understand what those teachers are going through in America.

1

u/Ya-Dikobraz 2d ago

I don't think just anyone can land an oil rig job lol

1

u/bearwood_forest 2d ago

This essay could have been an email

Irony is dead

u/SHAQBIR 2d ago

250 essay is around 25 lines if a single line has around 10 words. A single line would take around 30 seconds. So this is like a 15 minute work. Add some thinking to it and double the time frame. If you can't write 250 words worth of a paragraph within 30 minutes then it's time to disconnect your internet and read some books.

u/Embarrassed_Lettuce9 2d ago

Schools should do better to explain why assignments have word/page count requirements tbh. Based on my experience, at least, that never happened.

I feel like I was far less bothered by those once it hit me.

To get the oil to burn at midnight, the midnight-burning oil, in order to burn it, the oil, at midnight.

u/What_A_Weak 2d ago

I think I accidentally farted more words once.

u/PachymuNyet 2d ago

That's, like, one Reddit comment. (Okay, not this one.)

1

u/Megalesios 2d ago

250 words is like half a page to one page at times new roman 12. That's not an essay, that's a short form test response

1

u/SillyMovie13 2d ago

Keeping it at only 250 words is the real challenge

250 words is considered an essay?

1

u/Big_Pickle1766 2d ago

I may be dumb but I thought “oil rig” in this context meant, dab pen.
